バレンタインデーのチョコレートに対しキャンデーやマシュマロをお返しす るのが一般的になっている。 日本でバレンタインデーが定着するにしたがって、若い世代の間でそれにお 返しをしようという風潮が生まれた。 これを受けたお菓子業界では昭和50年代に入ってから、個々に独自の日を定 めて、マシュマロやクッキー、キャンデー等を「お返しの贈り物」として宣 伝販売するようになった。 この動きをキャンデーの販売促進に結びつけ、全国飴菓子工業協同組合(全飴 協)関東地区部会が「ホワイトデー」として催事化した。 そして1978(昭和53)年、全飴協の総会で「キャンデーを贈る日」として制定 され、2年の準備期間を経て1980(昭和55)年に第1回のホワイトデーが開催さ れた。 ホワイトデーを3月14日に定めたのは、269年2月14日、兵士の自由結婚禁止政
