Long time, no type-y :). Cliques! Whoo hoo! It's been years since I had this conversation!!! Like hell it's not a community. How many communities have any of us belonged to that didn't experience friction and rivalry at times? I can't think of a-one. Hell, the Frucontinuum had massive friction but we pulled off a totally killer event. It rocked. I loved it. And I still love all my Fr|-friends, those I speak to with nominal frequency and those I rarely speak to. I don't talk to AJ nearly enough, but that doesn't mean I don't think he and his wife are kick-ass for giving me a veggie dog, a beer, great conversation, and a cute baby at FRFF '99. I *never* see Mcee, but I still consider her an amazing friend (not just because I'm in her wedding party :). As far as my motivations, they've changed over the years. I think most of the female (and maybe some of the males, why be exclusionary?) have probably had at least one crush on a member of the band. For some, they may even have had their crush fulfilled to some extent. That was how I started, from having a crush... but me being the shy little wall-flower I am, didn't bother with trying to throw myself at any of the members and that was cool with them and cool with me. A legitimate friendship formed not with a band member, but the road manager... and I helped him pack up and load gear and drive him or band members here or there and worked merch not because I wanted to be "in" with the band or because I wanted to get closer to the band...but because he was my friend and often he had little time to socialize so why not kill two birds with one stone? With that, its naturally in my nature to help out when I can... and I like being a part of something fun and wonderful and what seems to make a difference or lasting impression. I didn't do it for the visible association with the band, but for the personal sense of "i'm contributing something, i've giving something back to them to show that i appreciate their efforts." I joined the FruCon committee not because I thought it would give me a chance to interact more with the band... but because I had fun FCII weekend and many of the committee members became good friends over the year and I wanted to help out, I wanted to contribute, I wanted to give something back. I've been accused of being insincere about my motives... I've been accused of being a social climber... I've been accused of being an elitist and a snob... I've been accused of being a bitch (well, can't deny that last one, *snort*). I'll say this, anyone who knows me knows the truth; its their judgement I respect; for anyone else... life is too short to let it be controlled by gossip. my two bits, Angie SnarkiFru - -- "The idea of my using Viagra is like putting a brand new flagpole on a condemned building" Harvey Korman to Tim Conway Carol Burnett Showstoppers __________________________________________________________________ Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. Fruvous content: none. I'm totally digging it too (anyone who visited #mf lately saw it gracing the topic) but don't you find it, well, exuding misery about lost love, past love, broken love, and lost love? The music and arrangement are both superlative, but ye gods, it's enough to make one sob.
