I'd asked Dave awhile back (i think like, at Frucon or Darien Lake, I forget) if he might consider resurrecting it for me as a special request... and he did! *cartwheels* ok, so i'm easily excitable these days... can i tell you i was quite happy having a life and spending time in my own apartment and not so much missing the band until this discussion started up? dammit, its time to start playing again... I'd like to raise a second question tho... based on a discussion I was having with another committee member. If Fruvous spontaneously showed up on Feb 16th and announced that they were going back on tour at the beginning of March, with a schedule that was only a slight bit lighter than '97 - '00, would you/could you jump back into Frutripping mode as hard core as before? for me, to be perfectly honest... I don't think I could. I'd definitely go to shows, but I think I'd probably stay within my 3 hour radius... and I'd end up with a lot of conflicts with shows; simply because Fruvous on Hiatus=me getting a life again ;) Angie snarkifru ------------------------------ Date: 14 Feb 2002 00:06:01 -0800 From: aj@locicero.org (A.J. You just had to be in Kingston where they first started singing it ;) Of course, it sounded completely different from one show to the other, but there you go: does it count as an improv if they've done it twice? I'd say sure. I'd also say that most of their improvs are probably pre-rehearsed to a certain degree. > How about "Cross Border Shopping" or "Harbourmall" > or "Horseshoes" while the band members are > standing - that version could make your ears > bleed. ;D You mean sitting :) "Harbourmall" definitely. Since history began (ie since we began recording what's played when) Harbourmall has only been played once. > Alison > Big Fish (Frucon III I know) > Blow Wind Blow (Burk's Hell Ontario) I wouldn't count this one as rare - they used to do it a ton, and I've seen it at many festivals. I felt so proud of them because I knew they'd been nervous about doing that. Myself and several others had been telling them for a while that it would be ok to not play it all the time, yet they had felt that the crowd really expected it and that people would be upset if they didn't play it. > Anyone taking notes for the discussion groups at Frucon? I wouldn't know about that, but again, anyone who confuses these to songs is not only ignorant, but also a moron. (No punch pulling today my friends!) :) If there are any similarities it is because the TMBG guys are purposefully drawing from the Spiderman Theme for Particle Man. Parodying Spiderman is probably the point of the song for gosh sakes! (Although who can tell with TMBG.) :) I am frankly unsure how anyone who has grown up in The US or Canada could ask this question. The Spiderman theme is a pop culture icon! It has been heard on televisions across the continent for over 30 years! How could anyone even imagine that it was somehow a rip off of particle man? Those guys probably weren't even born when that show debuted. Harumph!!! Perhaps you have to live in Quebec ;) Quebec nuthin'. They performed La Complainte at my first show. In New Joysey of all places. But I think it was the first time they played in New Joysey, so maybe they mistook Appel Farm for N'Awlins or someplace. - -- Lori ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The good news is that I can manage my finances with governmental proficiency. Hey, they actually are trying to tell me advance tickets for Frucon and The Supers are SOLD OUT, with tickets only available at the box office. I said they couldn't be sold out, but if the block of tickets they had really had been sold, more could be made available to TicketWeb. I asked them if that means they will be giving 100% ticket sale revenue to Frucon, and how many tickets they've actually sold. Then the supervisor Carlos backed down, and said he couldn't tell me how many were sold but he would look into it... Well, I'll side with AJ on this and say that the similariities are too big to be an accident, I'd say there's no doubt it's an intentional reference by TMBG. The whole song (on the surface at least) about superheroes in general ("who came up with Person Man?") and the lyrical structure is a definite nod. As for the deeper meaning of the song, I've seen some weird ones. Check out http://www.tmbg.org/band-info/songs/interp/ParticleMan.html for an interesting selection. If they interest you, check out the interpretations on some of their other songs. TMBG's fans can be at least as wacky as the band.
