As someone previously pointed out, we can't restrict posting to subscribers, because no list of subscribers exists. We have a list of people subscribed to the *gateway*, but a large number of legitimate posts to ammf come from the newsgroup, not from the gateway, and there exists no list of people who post to the newsgroup. Also, the gateway is deliberately set up with two separate halves, mail->news and news->mail, that can be used separately. Someone who don't want to receive all the postings in their mailbox, should still be able to send postings via email if they'd like. Also, plenty of people want their mail going to one place, but send from another. So, here's what I've come up with: Any posting sent to the gateway that has either "moxy" or "fruvous" anywhere in the message body, will be allowed through. Furthermore, the email address in the From: line of that message will be stored automatically on my server. Any posting where the email address in its From: line matches one of the addresses thus stored, will also be allowed through. The theory here is that spam is highly unlikely to include either of these strings, and that spammers have no idea who we are, and don't care, enough to find out and tailor their spam to bypass this rule. What this means is that you must include "moxy" or "fruvous" in your message body somewhere, and from that point on, all of your postings will go through as long as your From: address remains the same. If you want to post from a different address, you must remember to include "moxy" or "fruvous" the first time you use the new address. I'm going to start out by putting a disabled form of this filter on the mail->news part of the gateway. For the next couple of weeks, it will silently collect "legitimate" email addresses, without filtering anything. This will hopefully give people a chance to learn about this new filter, and post with "moxy" or "fruvous", before the filter goes into effect. I'll post again when I turn the filter on, and from that point on, postings from unknown addresses will be dropped if they don't have the right key words in them. I'm not, at this point, planning to put the filter on the news->mail part of the gateway. So, people subscribing to the mailing list will continue to see exactly the same postings as arrive at shore.net's news server for ammf. If enough of you ask for it, I can put the same filter on that half of the gateway too. Then, postings made via news will have to pass the filter before being distributed to the mailing list subscribers. - -- -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@polyamory.org http://cos.polyamory.org/ -- WBRS (100.1 FM) -- info@wbrs.org http://www.wbrs.org/ "We're a bunch of geeks, and so is our audience. (see my profile (Chappo) on FHDC for photos ..coming soon!!!) Ok, I admit, the only reason I went to this show was the catch Murray performing in the UK. I'm not a fan of the main act that night Runrig...and I hadn't heard any GBS music before last night...so I did wonder whether it would be worth forking out #18 for a ticket to see "the bass player in the support band"!!! But with FruJersey on I made my way to the venue in plenty of time so I didn't miss a thing. GBS came on stage at around 8 pm starting off with an accapella song (you will have to forgive my ignorance of the song titles)...and immediately got the audience involved clapping along. I was impressed with the way they worked the crowd as not many supporting acts seem to make the effort...and the Royal Concert Hall in my experience has always had an unexcitable crowd at the best of times. Having never seem them before I can't say what effect Murray had on GBS's sound. But he seemed to fit in very very well playing the acoustic bass and adding the bass harmony vocals...and he was really enjoying himself and jumping around with the rest of the band..and taking some slick bass solo licks towards the end of the set. Early in the set the singer (Alan?)..mentioned that they had played in Nottingham before "a long time ago on a plastic ski slope"..and that whenever someone mentions Nottingham to them now they "don't think hey that's where Robin Hood came from..but that's where the plastic ski slope is"!!! Also during the first few songs where the audience were singing back lines to him he told us to "empty our wallets on stage and prey to the idol Murray" Altogether they put up a great show and I hastily made my way to the merch table to get a copy of "Road Rage". I left about half way through Runrig's set (cos quite frankly they were boring me to tears!!) and ran around to the stage door to see if I could get to talk to Murray, but I think that the band had left already to sample the Nottingham nightlife. But it was a great night out...good to see Murray over this side of the atlantic and good to see GBS. Any chance of any other members of Fruvous venturing over this part of the world either alone or together??? Cheers everyone!
