It's not something you can compare to Fruvous -- it's an entirely different animal altogether. It may be a darker album, but it's one that makes you smile while you listen. - -- Josh Woodward Technical Yahoo - Yahoo! Is Dave's album hopelessly > brooding? Well I've only skimmed through the disk so far but I would have to say that I think you are getting a one sided-view from the clips. First of all this is NOT Fruvous, nor is it meant to be, so I wouldn't expect that particular sensibility to come through. Dave's musical tastes are very broad, but on this album he sticks to only a few genre the most predominant being blues (or perhaps I should say Blues-y) He's playing a lot of dobro on this disc and that, I think, is a clue to the musical mood. The dobro is not a usually a happy go lucky instrument. The tempos tend to be slow to moderate, that is true, but you know if you think about it, Fruvous tempos are generally moderate to fast. I can see why Dave might have a whole bunch of slow stuff inside him that hasn't had a way to come out. That might explain the "mellowness" That being said, there are certainly songs that are neither brooding nor sleepy, Girls With Guitars for example. And there is Brainard, which if you ask me just begs to be on the next Fruvous album (if such ever comes about.) Like anything Marty, I think you just have to buy the album and listen to it for a while before you can really form an opinion. (That being said, I have to admit that in my experience one will start to like ANYTHING one listens to long enough. But isn't that what you really want, to like Dave's album? I came into this whole thing between Wood and Moon, but I bought Bargainville and listened to it constantly. I knew Wood and "b" existed, but couldn't buy them. Bought Moon when it came out and then bought Wood and "b" at my first show. When I started, I loved Bargainville, but after 5 months of constant listening, the gimmick crap got really old to me. Now, Thornhill is my favorite Fruvous album with Wood in second. > I have heard clips of Dave Matheson's new album, and I have > to say, they are rather depressing excerpts. I dunno about depressing. It doesn't depress me. At this point, I only skip 2 tracks (Fussy Baby and Girls with Guitars) when I listen to the album. The whole album. I bought it. Can I ask what clips you're listening to in order to get an idea of what your opinion of the album is based on? The only complete song I heard pre-release was "You Remind Me" which isn't depressing at all to me. > Assuming the album is > reflective of the clips, would you say the effect of the mellowness of > this album is similar to the effect brought about when we first heard > "Wood?" Heh, I question the "usual Fruvous joy was still there" argument with Wood but that's a whole nother thread I guess. > Applying this sort of analysis to Dave's album, is it fair to say that > the depressing moodiness I hear in the sound clips is just a knee-jerk > reaction? Is Dave's album hopelessly > brooding? I'd say knee jerk reaction. There's a decent mix on the actual album. Overall, it's pretty simple music usually with at most 2 things going on (lyric and guitar) and predominantly there's one thing going on (either lyric or guitar). Check the lyrics out on www.davidmathison.ca but even that doesn't tell the whole story. For example, the opening song Drive Too Much may sound depressing from the lyrics, but from the actual song it's almost a chucking at yourself for doing something. Comparing Dave's album to stuff on Bargainville probably isn't fair. Bargainville is a strong strong album, but to most people it's dominated by the gimmick schtick crap that made for a good busking show (King of Spain, Spiderman, Authors, BJ, Darlington Darling). Even the deeper listening songs are just applying that style to issues. There's a reason that Dave's solo album songs are on Dave's solo album. They aren't Moxy Fruvous songs. There's a lot of influences that come through on Dave's album that never even show their head in anything Moxy Fruvous has ever performed. Dave's album plays on Dave's strengths, his genuiness and personableness, his voice and his guitar playing. In my opinion, it does that really well, but not all Moxy Fruvous fans are gonna care about it. They may not even realize those parts of Moxy Fruvous because they are blindsided by Jian rants or Mike humping the floor. Not that those are bad things by the way *grin* Dave's lyrics are incredibly strong. Dave's voice is incredibly strong. Dave's guitar playing is incredibly strong. That's what the album is. I'll leave you with some brilliant lyrics reprinted from www.davidmatheson.ca without permission. They're copyright David Matheson I'd think. This is track 6 I think on Dave's album and makes me happy to visualize. It's the farthest from depressed you can get *grin*. Of course I like the lyrics about 100% more than the actual song, but eh, you can't win them all *grin* Read the lyrics at www.davidmatheson.com and decide if you like them. If so, give the album a chance. I love it myself. Hay In the cool snap of autumn. 6 guys in a van move through Alberta. The flat of the land. It's golden and green. It's golden and it's black. From the corduroy stripes of the combine track. And giants will gather before the snow falls. And roll the great hay bales like bocce balls. And pull them back tight against telephone wires. And fire them like slingshots and roll them like tires. And mush them all up to make hay bale perogies. And chew 'em like jerky and smoke 'em like stogies. And when they're tired out, loose hay all around 'em. They'll fix up the bales and leave the fields how they found 'em. Then they'll walk off together. Their steps are so wide. They'll be home in the mountains in just a few strides. We drive through the prairies. We play in a band. The smell of September. The flat of the land. And giants will play here. I am a believer. I'll see them again and I'll get the hay fever. - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 May 2001 18:39:23 -0400 From: Marie-Claude Subject: Re: Hennessey Katherine Maheux wrote: > Marie-Claude wrote: > > I know the feeling! What's one off-topic post - with or without an "OT" in front of it? Not like that hasn't happened before. But mostly, it's not just a puppy. It's animal abuse (which frequently leads to child or spouse or other people abuse). It's an innocent life ended by someone who doesn't seem to have the correct mental capacity to distinguish between a friendly puppy and a life-threatening situation - obviously someone who shouldn't be carrying a gun and put in a position of power in his community, power which has apparently gone to his head. Sure, there are heartbreaking things that happen every day that chip away at the soul of our "civilization" and this is another one. In world perspective, it's one of the smaller things. It just happened to be the one that tipped the scale for Jill today and she needed to say something about it. I would hope we've got enough bandwidth and compassion here in our little corner of the 'net to let her do that.
