I actually found them when searching for rare They Might Be Giants songs (I've been a fan of TMBG for over 10 years and have all their albums, a TMBGUnlimited subscription, etc). I ran across their cover of Shoehorn With Teeth and was instantly hooked. My question is, which album would I be best off buying first? I'm thinking of getting "Live Noise," but would one of the other albums be better? I'll probably wind up buying all of their albums eventually, but I'm not sure which one to start with. Also, it seems like there is a link between them and TMBG. Not only did they cover Shoehorn, but there have been other references I've run across, and I've noticed a few of the regulars in alt.music.tmbg seem to also be Moxy Fr|vous fans. Did they ever tour together or something? - -- Troy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 19:01:24 GMT From: mike96@bluecrow.com (Mike Yoshioka) Subject: Re: Fordyisms On Wed, 25 Apr 2001 19:15:38 GMT, Katherine Maheux wrote: > >My body may be ravaged by age, but my spirit lives on, I see. In any case, I think you should start with Bargainville (their first album) and then just continue buying the rest in chronological order of release date. (So I guess that would be Bargainville, You Will Go To The Moon, The B Album, Live Noise, Wood, Thornhill, and The C Album > Also, it seems like there is a link between them and TMBG. (Ideally I just take them to a show.) So yeah, that's a great place to start. If not Live Noise, I'd say Bargainville. They're the most accessible. - -Rachel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 16:02:18 -0500 From: Chad Maloney Subject: Re: Questions about Moxy =?iso-8859-1?Q?Fr=FCvous?= Troy wrote: > I recently discovered Moxy Fr|vous. They are based out of the DC area, but get around a little bit. The cover is off their album Bendy's Law and Moxy Fruvous sat in with them for the one song. > My question is, which album would I be best off buying first? I'm > thinking of getting "Live Noise," but would one of the other albums be > better? I'd recommend Live Noise. It's the best representative mix of humor and songs, acapella and not and gets a good idea of the strengths that Fruvous has in their live show. > Also, it seems like there is a link between them and TMBG. Not only did > they cover Shoehorn, but there have been other references I've run > across, and I've noticed a few of the regulars in alt.music.tmbg seem to > also be Moxy Fr|vous fans. Did they ever tour together or something? They get lumped together a lot for some reason. A lot of people think it's the upbeatness and "quirkiness", but I'd think mostly it's just fan cross-over and the intellectual-ness of both groups. I don't think they've ever played together, but I'm not sure. Some members of Fruvous are also fans of They Might Be Giants. I don't know if the Johns admire Fruvous. Jian has been known to throw in TMBG lyrics here and there during shows (usually with his trademark lyrics screw ups) and if you get Live Noise, you'll hear a one liner of "The Statue Made Me High" from him during a fade out. They also have used the Particle Man style to fuel a couple of improvs, most notably the Media Lab improv from the first MIT show in 1997. - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 21:58:24 GMT From: Dead@thwip.polyamory.org, from@thwip.polyamory.org, the@thwip.polyamory.org, Neck@thwip.polyamory.org, Up@Home.com (Tim the DeadHead) Subject: Re: Questions about Moxy Früvous On Thu, 26 Apr 2001 18:47:04 GMT, Troy pondered for a while, and then wrote: >Hello, > >I recently discovered Moxy Fr|vous. I'm >thinking of getting "Live Noise," but would one of the other albums be >better? Live Noise is the album which got my whole family hooked on The Mighty Fr|. It's a fantastic mix of different songs from each album, and really lets their live performance stand out (but then, I always was a sucker for a live show. For me, if you can't do it live, you shouldn't do it at all. Too many "bands" are just creations of a good recording engineer and a 'punch' button!) Besides that, since there's a fair amount of on-stage banter throughout the album, it gives you a real 'feel' for what their live shows can be like. I'm sure that there are some live shows (recorded by fans) that have a better 'feel', but I have yet to hear one which has the clarity of recording to make it seem as though you were really AT the show while listening to it. Don't get me wrong...the audience tapings are great! This is just how we were introduced to the band, and it worked just swell for us. My advice would be.. 1) purchase LN 2) unwrap 3) insert into stereo 4) turn it up to 11 5) finish listening to the album, then sprint back to your local Tunes shack and buy several copies of everything they've ever recorded. Political satire, biting social commentary, digestive distress..all are grist for their mill. Enjoy. How the heck can someone's FIRST album be Stereotypical? Stereotypical of what? What are you saying, that Fruvous sounds like themselves on Bargainville? It is what you might think if you are looking at the US release dates but that is because Wood and b were not available in the US for a long time.
