I've attempted to reconstruct the set lists, but I wasn't taking notes, and I don't really know the names of Andy's songs. So, other than the order and names of the songs, it should be pretty close. Show 1 I arrived at the Bottom line with plenty of time to spare, and got myself a seat right in front of the drum kit. Jian, Erin, and Andy came on stage and started tuning. *Then* the Bottom Line announcer introduced them. Jian distracted himself with an image of a big curtain rising as they were introduced, with them in rock-star poses ready to play. Then he introduced the bunch and explained what they were doing - sort of a revved up version of the folkie guitar circle. The banter of the first show revolved around Jian's hair neurosis and the 3 Song Circle rule book. Among the 3 Song Circle Rules is: 10a, try to play an instrument almost as big as yourself, especially if the smaller version of the instrument sounds like ass. (by the way, the difference between Canadians and Americans is that Canadians do not know what ass sounds like). There's also a rule about not using 3 Song Circus Soap. Although, strangely enough, not about not talking about 3 Song Circus. And did you know Jian could play bass? Well, he can! He and Andy took turns at the drum kit (Jian's stand-up kit) and either bass, guitar, or keyboard, with Erin trading the bass and guitar. Les Cooper provided backing vocals and guitar. The choreography was a bit confusing for them, with guitar straps constantly being lost and glasses of water being knocked over. Note - Jian was his talkative funny-guy self. Erin is the ironic one. She wants to embrace this as fully as possible, but is seems the guys are having none of it. And Andy seems to border on taciturn - but it's so not the case. Oh yeah, we were also treated to Jian and Erin impersonating Andy. Aproximate set-list: Erin's La Petite Mort Lots of fun, Ji and Andy enjoy saying "Oh Estelle" (Joined on stage by Les) Andy's Alien (maybe?) Jian's Baby Don't Lie Les's slide steel guitar was fantastic. Put him on the album, Ji! Erin Solo - Lullaby Jian's Astronaut Andy's God Saved Me Erin's The Little Cowboy Jian gets to scat a bit on this swingie ditty Andy Solo - The Day We All Sang dedicated to George W. Bush Up until this point, Jian has been talking about his hair. Andy, while tuning, asks for questions from the audience. It appears that Andy is fairly ambivalent towards his own hair. Jian's Follow the Road Introduced as the oldest new song being played, being about 1 or 2 years old already. Personally, I thought it sounded a bit Cat Stevens. Erin's Blackbirds Andy and Jian switching instruments during an extended version of this song. Andy's Dark Eyed Girl (might have only been in the second set, in which case, I can't remember what came here) Jian Solo - Lousy Boy Jian's only fist fight was in Grade 8. Apparently, that means 8th grade in Canadian. Also apparently, it is not important who won that fight. I am also compelled to note that Jian wiped his nose 3 times before beginning the song. Erin's Closed Up A new song for her, not on her album. Punk flavor. The boys were jumping up and down on this one. Erin likes this part of the show because they start rocking. Andy's Sex with the Queen of England Jian's Persian Cowboy Encore: With or Without You Another 3 Song Circus rule is that the encore must be a cover which they don't know. And since, despite playing it as the encore for the past 4 nights, they don't really know With or Without You, it counts. Les got to sing lead for one verse, and his electric guitar was a highlight. Jian replaced "And you give" with "Andy Gibb." Most priceless, Les, Erin and Jian set their instruments on recorded loops, and left the stage while Andy remained drumming. The look on his face was downright morose. But of course they came back and finished the jam. The loops were set again and everyone left the stage. The volume slowly faded, until Les poked his head out and flipped the switch off. Or it might have been a dial. After the set, I went to the merch booth and said hi to Tobey. I gave him a craft foam budgie dog magnet (see my FHDC profile for pic), and I also gave magnets to some people I'd met at Frucon. But the biggest gift of the eve was the craft foam and puff paint "Ji-Lo" belt buckle I made for Jian (for the well-dressed Persian Cowboy, of course). Unfortunately, by the time he talked to the folks who weren't staying for the second show, it was time for him to go back stage. I managed to shove it under his face and he seemed a bit baffled by it, but luckily recognized that it was, indeed, a belt buckle, and did, indeed, say Ji-Lo. I would have like to have talked, but time did not permit. Show 2 For the second show, I went towards the middle-right side of the stage (in this case, Stage Erin). My friend Stephanie came just in time for the show. We were sitting near some folks who had seen them a week earlier in Pennsylvania, and were fans of Erin. One had heard of Moxy Fruvous before, but none of them were familiar with their music. When I mentioned that Jian was the drummer, they were surprised - so Stephanie and I got to describe the Fruvous 4-lead-singer set-up to them. This might be a good time to mention that no one on stage made any references to Fruvous during either show. The closest Jian came was mentioning that he had never released a *solo* album before, and maybe saying that Follow the Road is an older song. I'm actually quite impressed by that. Yay Solo Jian! The tone changed substantially between the shows. The first one was pretty low key. They seemed to have much more energy, and even chemistry, for the second one. I prefer not to attribute this to the fact that they all were drinking thoughout the second set. Jian had his "I dig your boyfriend" T-Shirt on. Haven't seen that one in ages, personally. Jian's hair only came up once, this time as he compared it to the Brady Bunch final season Peter Brady hair-do. Sorry, Ji, but you were completely right on that one. Kinda hoped you'd hop into a rendition of "Time to Change." Alas, no such luck. I think Les did some of the Brady theme, though. The banter for this show included a detailed description of Andy's run-in with the cops earlier in the tour. I would like to cite Fiona and Kath's 100% Factual Review on a.m.m-f for details. Set list wise, take the setlist from the first show and substitute the following: Erin performed Daisy and Prudence for her solo piece. She mentioned that it had misfired earlier in the tour. This time, Les played guitar to back her up. I'm glad she tried it again; I think it was the most beautiful part of either show. Andy definitely (I think) played Dark Eyed Girl during this show. About that Middle Eastern princess who falls in love with an American and forges paperwork and now lives in Iowa. Or something like that. I think there's a TV movie about it - The Princess and the Marine. Jian performed Natalia for his solo piece. Introduced as an homage to his relationships with unstable and self-destructive people, one named Natalia in particular. He said something about not having played it yet on this tour, or only once. There's a version of Natalia floating around on Napster. From what I hear. The rest of the set was pretty much the same. Same encore - although they didn't play with the loops this time. Tuning for Persian Cowboy took really long because Andy broke a guitar string and Jian had to use a spare guitar. I think that made them shorter on time so they cut the encore a bit. Unfortunately, the Bottom Line started chasing us all out before Jian, Erin and Andy came out, although people did have a chance to talk with Les a bit. Perhaps we could've been a bit more tenacious and stayed longer, but I was getting cranky. So, I'd like to thank Andy, Erin and Jian for two great shows. Andy: I'm gonna go out and buy your CD. And your next one too. Erin: Hey, I went to Brown too! Did you once perform with Dar Williams in Alumni Hall? Jian: Hope you like the belt buckle! If it falls apart, Elmers will put it back together. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Apr 2001 21:08:40 -0700 From: bavesBest04041A@yahoo.com Subject: -RE:-FWD:Because these secrets were never intended to reach your EYES ========================== READY TO KNOW?
