Hi, guys! I'd like to thank all the Fr|fans who responded to my request for help both individually, and via the newsgroup! I knew this was the right place to come for that kind of resource! In the end, here's what happened: I'm flying Southwest (my preferred airline, anyway) into Buffalo from Baltimore. I subscribe (already) to their email-fare sale-update list; I got a round trip fare for about $45 each way. I'm renting a car from Enterprise. There's a courtesy phone to their location at the Buffalo Airport baggage claim; otherwise, I'd call the (800) number; they come and pick me up in their airport shuttle. I'm under 25 (24, damnit), so they're one of the few companies that will rent to me at all. Beyond that, due to some funky New York State laws, and that particular location, there is NO SURCHARGE for persons aged 21-24 to rent. (They'll rent to people 18+, but there are some caveats for folks 18-21.) I asked about crossing the border. They said, "Sure, no problem, happens all the time." I think this is a factor of them being next to it... I would've done my car reservation online through www.enterprise.com, but they advised persons under 25 to call the location directly, so I did. The gal with whom I spoke was quite helpful. Because Buffalo's Enterprise is an "airport" location, they do *not* offer the $9.99/day-weekend-special. So the car is $24.99/day (+tax); for an "economy" car, it's $5.99/hour up to the full-day rate. The next size up is +$2/day, the next size from that is +$4/day. A note on mileage: Enterprise offers unlimited mileage with their weekend packages-- *IF* you stay within the state. If you don't, you get 150 miles/day. Granted, driving up to Toronto and back should fit inside that nicely, with a three-day rental. A note about insurance: the first time I needed to rent a car, I was 22. Enterprise was the *only* place that would rent to anyone under-25 around here (Washington, DC area). I had to pay a surcharge for being under 25. The next time I tried to rent (on Long Island), I tried with Hertz-- using the New York law that you can be 18+ to rent in NY. It didn't work. That (they said) only works for corporate locations or corporate accounts, and I had to be traveling on official business. I wasn't. That sucked mightily. I tried a couple of the other on-site locations; one said they had no surcharge, but they had *specific vehicles* for people under 25 to drive, and that they didn't have any. In general, the surcharge almost-doubled the cost of renting the car. My own personal auto insurance covers me on rental vehicles; it's a clause I requested. Therefore, I don't have to purchase the optional insurance offered by the rental company. HOWEVER, some companies will force you to do this if you are under 25. ON THE OTHER HAND, with *proof* of your own insurance, or an auto title in your name, some of them will waive it. I'm bringing copies of my insurance papers to Buffalo with me-- just in case! THE OTHER OPTIONS I EXPLORED-- Amtrak: There is a train that runs to Toronto; however, it seems to run once a day. In my case, the timing was not convenient. No matter what I tried, the only times available was a 7:15PM arrival in Toronto; the train departing for Buffalo seems to only run at 9:30AM. However, fare (at least going *to* Toronto) was a mere $16. Train 63 Departs Buffalo-Depew, NY 3:02PM arrives CBN 4:14PM Train 7098 Departs CBN 5:15PM arrives Toronto, ON 7:14PM Greyhound: I found this to be absolutely unfeasible (well, within my itinerary). They wanted it to take 5+ hours, with multiple transfers, to get from Buffalo to Toronto, and it cost more than the train. I'm not actually going to Toronto proper-- I'm going just north of there to Barrie-- and if I can drive it in under three hours, it's worth the extra money to get the car myself. Based on recommendations by folks on the ng, Amtrak's web site, and other sources, I'll have several forms of ID with me at the border-- Amtrak specifically states that just a driver's license won't cut it, so I'll have my passport. Greyhound and Amtrak *both* offer disounts to Student Advantage members (www.studentadvantage.com); when I was commuting back and forth from Manhattan to Boston one summer, I joined just for the sake of getting the discount-- it was worth it! All they really require is a copy of a Student ID. I also got coupons and discounts for all kinds of shops, products, and services (e.g., Hair Cuttery) for being a member. They claim to offer discounts at Dollar Rent-a-Car (indicating that they'll rent to folks under 25, with no added fees), priceline.com, and other folks-- around now, they're pushing spring break stuff and travel. FYI, today's Southwest Email Fare sale is offering $30 each way from Baltimore to Buffalo! Some of the flights are already sold out on that price, though (other prices still available), so move fast! www.iflyswa.com or www.southwest.com . Told by the "Authorities" or by the rental company? I guess I can sort of see why the company might not want you to do that. If you take their car back to your country it might be a real hassle for them to get it and you back if you didn't return it. OTOH I can't imagine what objections the customs people would have... except maybe that you are importing a car without paying duty... Hmm... that could be it too I guess. You are importing a vehicle from the US, but you are not required to RETURN to the US, and in fact you cannot guarantee that the US will ALLOW you back in to return the car. Its an esoteric objection, but I guess I see the logic. A.J. - -- "Ann and I will carry out this equivocal message to the world: Markets must be open." - --G.W. I think this is might conflict a bit with my Falcon Ridge plans, but I am considering heading up there a day late to catch this. Anyone else? Its an esoteric objection, but I >guess I see the logic. > It was just the rental car company. But they said legally I was not allowed to do so. I didn't really push it, because, well, I wasn't planning on going into Canada. Also, when a friend flew out here to Seattle, to visit both Seattle and Vancouver, he was told that a canadian could not be driving his rental car into canada. (I know, only the person who rented the car is supposed to drive that car, unless you pay the extra fees, but I digress). So, a separate car company, in a different state said the same thing. But, still, it was just the car companies saying it, not actual law type figures. :D Mike ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V5 #82 *******************************************
