I'm not sure what Hugo's issues are and don't care to engage in a debate, but the answer to his first question is simple: Those of us who are volunteering our time to organize Frucon IV want to make sure that everyone who wants to come can do so. That's why we put a lot of time and energy into finding a larger place to hold the 'Con and have tried to incorporate as many suggestions from past and future attendees as possible into this year's plans. For example, we're extending the hours because folks have asked for extra time to meet and greet. Will the Con sell out? I don't know. We hope we have secured a large enough place to accomodate everyone, even if they show up the day of the event. But we can make a better Con if we know how many people are coming BEFORE then. That's one reason why we've made the price of the advance tickets significantly lower (US$9) than door tickets (CDN$20). By selling tickets in advance this year, we're able to arrange the Friday pub event and Johnny Saucep'n's breakfast on Sunday. We're also going to be able to prepare appropriately for however many people choose to come to the Con itself. With advance ticket sales, we'll have a good idea of how many sodas we'll need, how many chairs ought to be there, etc. Oh yes, there's one more detail: The room in which we hold the Con isn't free. Although we've got a place that is less expensive than many of the other suggested venues, the bill for the venue comes two weeks in advance of the Con itself. I don't know about the rest of the committee, but I'm not willing to put up hundreds of dollars of my own personal funds if I don't know with certainty that we'll have enough people there to break-even on expenses. It's that simple. LoCicero" Subject: ***Frucon Update*** Here's what's new: The Colony: As some of you know we've been having a hotel situation this week. The Colony at one point was out of rooms in our block and claiming that they had no more to add. Well, we twisted a few arms and got a few more rooms, but really the Colony is very booked up at this point. As of this writing there were 8 rooms left for Thursday, and 6 rooms left for Friday and Saturday. Sunday and Monday are completely sold out. The other thing is that the ONLY kind of rooms left are rooms with ONE KING-SIZE BED. If that type of room does not suit your situation, you will want to look at the alternative below. To book rooms at the Colony you must Call 416-977-0707, the LOCAL Colony reservations desk, and ask for the Fr|Con rate. THE PEOPLE AT THE 1-800 NUMBER DO NOT HAVE THE DETAILS ON THE FRUCON RATE. Also note that the Colony will only hold this block through MONDAY JANUARY 22nd, so if you want a room there you need to call RIGHT NOW. I would urge any of you with rooms at the Colony to double check with them that they have you in the right kind of room, because we've found that some committee people were given king rooms without really being told. If you told them that there was only going to be one person in the room, when in fact there might be more you are quite likely to be in this situation. The Alternative: Since the Colony is so full, we've made arrangements for a block of rooms at the Comfort Suites Hotel, 200 Dundas Street East. This is a few blocks away from the Colony. You can check them out on the web at http://www.toronto.com/comfortsuites The Comfort Suites have all types of rooms available, and they've given us the same great rate of $109 CDN that we have at the Colony. If you still need a room and you don't want a king bed, this is where you will want to book. To get the Frucon rate at the Comfort Suites you must call (416)362-7700 and ask for reservations. Again, THE PEOPLE AT THEIR 800 RESERVATIONS OFFICE DO NOT HAVE INFO ON THE RATE. You will want to ask for Group Number 1437 or for Frucon. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE COMFORT SUITES CAN ONLY HOLD THIS BLOCK OF ROOMS THROUGH JANUARY 26th, so make sure you get your reservations in this week. AFTER THE 26th YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY FULL PRICE if there are any rooms available. Frucon Tickets: Just to annoy Hugo :) I'm going to urge you all once again to buy your con tickets in advance. It really helps us a lot to know how many people are coming, plus you will save a few bucks because even with the ticket web fees, tickets in advance are cheaper. To purchase tickets, go to Ticketweb at http://www.ticketweb.com/user/?region=on&query=detail&event=186822. Volunteers: The is now out for Frucon Volunteers. It is the volunteers who make the con possible. If you would like to volunteer an hour or two of your time to help run the con, please drop us an email at fruconvols@yahoo.com. Be sure to mention: If you have a preferred time to work or if you are taking part in any other activities which are scheduled, such as Open Mic. If you have a preferred task that you'd like to try out or that you know you enjoy from having done it in the past. Whether or not you've ever volunteered at previous Cons! All shifts will be one hour long (starting every hour on the hour), and all volunteers are asked to help clean up after the event. Some volunteers (depending on our numbers) may be asked to work two shifts throughout the day. Though you *are* listing a time and task preference, it is not 100% guaranteed that we'll be able to give everyone their first choice, so keep that in mind! **Important: The deadline for volunteer sign-up is **FEBRUARY FIRST**. After that, you'll be contacted with details about scheduling. For all the information on Frucon, go to http://frucon.tripod.com See you all at the Con! Now people will know that if they want to get the FruCon rate at the Colony, they have to move fast. But I'm afraid no one on the committee has given anyone enough beef (the most-chosen last meal, BTW.. but I digress) to know whether or not it's a safe bet to wait until Feb. 17 to buy their ticket for the con. Hey, I'm the first to understand the committee wants tickets to sell beforehand to cover their costs. I've never implied that you personally should cover costs. But maybe, just maybe, there are people out there who didn't give into buying in US$ like I did and want to wait for the door. Assurances that "we won't stop anyone from attending," from Doug really don't tell us whether your block of tickets on ticketweb is almost sold out -- or what the size of the block is so those more entreprising people among us can go to the Hall's website and compare numbers to see what the difference between the number of tickets and room capacity is. A little tranparency is needed, IMO. ps. Just to annoy you, we still don't know how many tickets to the Con have been sold so far. :P - -- "Feel the love, Damn the cold" - -- Pamela Brennan, Hennessey *MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO* Hugo Rodrigues Hugs on the Undernet / 49272270 ICQ Underemployed journalist http://www3.sympatico.ca/hrodrigues Forever Fruvous!!! *MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO*MOO* ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V5 #21 *******************************************
