He worked chrinbologically from Rapture forward and also played some covers (a Costello one I didn't know, a Tom Waits one I didn't know-- *not* "Clap Hands", and I.G. I think Amy Rigby might be up towards the top of my list of worst openers. Someone band affiliated (it might have been Jian) recently brought her up again as being a really horrible opener. I was amused that whoever it was actually remembered that. Others on the bad Fruvous openers list: Those dudes from Ludlow's in September '99 who were damn offensive The Jimmy's Chicken Shack guy who is apparently good with the band but I couldn't listen to solo ...there have been tons of crappy openers over the past few years that I've been seeing Fruvous. I can't remember them all. Favourite Fruvous openers (who shouldn't be openers): Eddie From Ohio Dan Bern (double bill. which doesn't explain why I'm currently skipping his show) Trout Fishing in America (these guys are just entertaining) Susan Werner (how many people can actual hold there own on a stage with the Fruvous boys? I can only think of two - Susan and Vance Gilbert) Tory Cassis Other favourite Fruvous openers (who in the Fruvous context should be openers): Butch Ross (even if I was paying more attention to killing that woman and stealing her husband) Danny Michel (do you have any idea how many CDs this man sold in February?) Hennessey (I enjoyed them. Not the top of the list but pretty damn good) Mike Errico (I love listening to his CD, even if I do always skip the first song) Dionysia wrote: > worst: > eggbot (for fruvous in portland, maine, this summer) > I must step up and defend Eggbot (whose real name I've rudely forgotten). I found him entertaining. He's opened for Fruvous more than once (and got some play before the Oberlin show on 9/2/00). Perhaps that's because they like him (not that that should matter). I mean, a certain mysterious bass player was chomping at the bit to buy the first three CDs Eggbot brought out (pointless name-dropping; also know as advertising by association - Murray bought 'em so you should too). And yes, in Oberlin Anna and I were the ones cheering for more Eggbot when Fruvous took the stage. Okay, I have obviously said enough for one post. I seem to have a posting bug of sorts these days. /l ------------------------------ Date: 07 Nov 2000 01:37:50 GMT From: bbwminors@aol.com (BBWMinors) Subject: Re: OT sorta: Opening acts OK Loren ... now I have to ask about the woman you wanted to kill so you could steal her husband. ------------------------------ Date: 07 Nov 2000 01:35:39 GMT From: bbwminors@aol.com (BBWMinors) Subject: Re: OT sorta: Opening acts Angel asked ... <> ... I have three megafavorites ... believe it or not, the Paula Cole duet ("Last in Love"), "Let's Go Slow" which I believe is done with his brother, and "Same Sad Smile" with Curtis Stigers. Wow. Indeed it was, and well worth the insane amount of money I forked over to Ticketmaster. Unfortunately, Jewel was also on that ticket. But I suppose it wasn't really *that* bad. I like to think of Jewel performing the same way I think of Fruvous playing "Fly" ... as a chance to hit the bathroom and have a cigarette (damn no smoking venues!) without missing anything interesting. :) - -anna- http://elements.dreamhost.com Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Nov 2000 20:46:25 -0500 From: lawrence solomon Subject: Re: this best/worst opener thing... I'm a bit naive when it comes to TMBG, so what is TMBG 86 opening for > TMBG 97 mean? well, in 1986 (and until early 1992) TMBG was a duo, and just a duo, and performed with, instead of a band, a tape machine, which played the rhythm tracks to their songs, and also occasional horns and other parts the two Johns couldn't play themselves. In 1997, they did a handful of special shows (one in New York, one in Chicago, one in Boston, and one in Baltimore, I think) where they opened for themselves as a duo, playing only songs from their first two albums. They did it again at one of the Bowery Ballroom shows in the past year, but played a different set of old songs. In both cases, they played a full band set afterwards that also included many older songs that hadn't been played since the duo days. They have also indicated that they won't be doing this again, because it means they end up playing for over three hours at one show, which is about twice as long as they usually play for. - -- lawrence solomon * http://www.fruhead.com/users/zaph * zaph@fruhead.com "And I don't know whether I believe in me, but I still believe in my friends." -The Nields ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Nov 2000 02:04:38 GMT From: Anna! I don't think he ever told us, seeing as how he purposely spoke in third person. When I asked him what his real name was, I do believe he said "Eggbot's real name *is* Eggbot." > I found him entertaining. He's opened for Fruvous more than once (and > got some play before the Oberlin show on 9/2/00). Perhaps that's > because they like him (not that that should matter). Yes, he seemed quite enamored with Eggbot ... and why not? He was odd, but funny as hell. Perhaps the kind of performer that one would want their friends to hear so badly that they would call them up on a cell phone and hold the reciever up to the stage just to they could hear the music. I know certain people who would do that for Eggbot. Yeah, so he's not the damn Neilds who everyone (except those of us with the word "caterwaul" in our vocabulary) seems to love so much, but he's doing music that he believes in, and especially because it is so unbelievably strange, I really respect him for that. I think it takes a lot of guts to get up on stage in front of anyone (Fruvous fans especially) and play something that you know 90% of the audience is going to either not understand, or not appreciate. I'm not saying that I've got his CD on regular rotation ... hell, I didn't actually buy one (I really do think Murray bought them all. Bastard.) ... but I think he's a pretty decent artist. > And yes, in Oberlin Anna and I were the ones cheering for more Eggbot > when Fruvous took the stage. I will shamlessly admit to that. I think Eggbot should have opened that show as well. I think maybe Fruvous should have opened for Eggbot. What, you think there's only *one* woman out to kill Loren? Didn't you know she's a husband thief? Not to mention stand-offish and snobby and intimidating and ... um, mean. Yeah. Really mean. Actually, I will say that the time I saw her at the Vault, I thought she (and band) was awful. However, a while later I heard some of her stuff on the radio and it actually sounded pretty good. I guess she just needs a producer and a sound guy and a mixer and all sorts of other things... chad - -- chad at radix dot net - helvetica the anti-point ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V4 #445 ********************************************
