Umm. Ottawa Folk Fest is not reviewable, at least from this perspective. However: Fruvous played not 3 but *6* appearances: mainstage Friday night; Days Inn (formerly Luxor) after-hours Friday night; workshop Saturday with the Worms as mentioned by Trace; an added solo appearance Saturday at the Rogers (indoor) workshop stage, and 2 added workshops on Sunday. No repeats in the set lists, as usual with their folk fest appearances. The mainstage performance was what you'd expect -- heavy on the "hits" like Michy, IWHO and King/Green; as was the Rogers Stage appearance. Days Inn appearance was all covers, starting with Nowhere Man and ending with Allison. Oh, excuse me, they performed Psycho at the Days' Inn and again on the Rogers workshop stage on Saturday, so that was their sole "repeat". On Saturday, thanks at least partly to the aforementioned Centre of the Universe who put the idea in the band's heads after the Friday-night covers set, we also got a medley of Queen tunes. :) During Marion Fruvous at one workshop on Sunday, Fruvous was defined by Murrman as "cart-jacking" (because they didn't have cars in the 19th century.) Please note that when the audience was asked to recite the Poem of Marion Fruvous, which theoretically all Ontarians should have learnt in grade 4, only one lone Ontarian and 2 Americans made the attempt. Clearly a forgetful bunch, those grade 4 grads. :) Anyway, that's about all (printable) that I can remember of this dizzying little weekend -- that and, I was truly IN the Present Tense Tureen, not just filling up my little white bowl. Let it be mentioned that 9 Fruvous appearances and 3 Worms appearances in one week handily beat my previous record of 6/1 set last August, and with significantly less driving too. :) Am I smiling too much? "Man, we haven't had that much trouble finding something juicy since the 'Weird Al' episode," VH1 senior vice-president Bill Flanagan said. "We can almost always hit paydirt with a band's groupies, but in They Might Be Giants' case, they're all 31-year-old computer programmers." Quote #2 was the only time I've ever seen Jian crack himself up uncontrollably. They were mocking F'loom and the good-natured F'loomers turned around and mocked the lads back. Too funny. Ottawa definitely had the best run workshops I've seen in a long while. FRFF take note! Fewer performers + an hour long workshop = at least 3 rounds of songs and a very relaxed, fun workshop.
