Or... will they be doing a Record Archive gig one of the days??? Thanks-- Paul B ------------------------------ Date: 28 Aug 2000 19:57:35 GMT From: mindunit@aol.com (Mind Unit) Subject: Re: Jian in the Post The Washington Post is my hometown paper, while Moxy Früvous CDs occupy all six slots in my car's 6-CD changer (the car, a V-6 Merc in...well, olive), so I have to say it's pretty damn cool to see Jian doing an opinion column there. I do agree that Starbucks is a prime component of "Generica" (the increasingly larger and more numerous chunks of America that look alike no matter where you go). When I visited Toronto for the last FrüCon, the relative lack of the familiar franchises (Burger Kings, Dunkin Donuts, US Army Recruiting Offices, etc.) struck me immediately, and I had to ask one of the very friendly Torontoers (Torontoans? Torontese? Torontlings?) why this was. According to my Instant Canadian Friends, there is a strong enough political will with the zoning boards that franchises are often not granted permission to build. So in Toronto you do still see lots of nice little single proprietorships, unique places to get your coffee, doughnuts, hamburgers and porn. I can't help feeling that the political will there is not so much against the evil effects of generic franchises, but against the evil effects of American cultural inundation. After all, there were plenty of PIZZA PIZZAs and other Canadian franchises (I had to eat at one, to spot the King of Spain. Not great pizza, sorry, and the KOS was a middle-aged woman with stringy hair.). Still, you can't argue with results; Toronto seemed cozy, friendly, and culturally alive...a very nice place to be, even in February. But I want to say this in defense of Generica: I think it's okay to have an überculture on top of the regional ones. In some ways, it's nice to be able to move from Virginia to Florida and still find a Waffle House to get your hash browns scattered, smothered, covered and chunked. The Taco Hells and Abblebee'ses, while they lack diversity, surprise and imagination, are still our culture, and America needs something *anything* that will tend to bring us together instead of dividing us. In 150 years there will be a Starbucks in some museum recreation of Turn-of-the-Millenium America, and people will drink coffee out of a styrofoam cup and pay extra to ride in the internal combustion vehicle. These things are part of who we are and the times we live in. And Jian admitted in the article that it's still possible to go to the unique alternatives to generic chains, it's just that they are getting harder to find. Well Jian, the next time you are in DC, I will take you to Politics and Prose on Connecticut Avenue, a one-of-a-kind bookstore and coffee house where authors and political pundits often speak, and President Clinton sometimes shops (Secret Service entourage and all). DC is full of fascinating, off-beat places, and if the trouble is finding them, just ask a few of your fascinating, off-beat fans. :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 22:19:03 GMT From: maggiemd@my-deja.com Subject: Re: Rochester stuff Paul Baker wrote: > Does anyone know if Fruvous will be on any local radio shows during > their Rochester visit? > > Or... will they be doing a Record Archive gig one of the days??? record archive, no. granted there hasn't been any official word, but seeing as how it's three shows in a row it's highly doubtful. so it's no. they'll be on WBER on wednesday afternoon. i don't know exactly what time it will be, but i'll post the information either tonite or tomorrow. :) ~Maggie~ Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 18:36:40 -0400 From: Paul Mischler Subject: Re: Rochester stuff Jian was supposed to call in to WBER last Friday, but that never materialized. It seems that RIAA were the lobbyists who put the "work for hire" clause into the omnibus spending bill (big bill that lets the governments spend money, often with other changes in the laws that are good for lobbyist groups, and bad for the president if he vetos the whole spending bill over it.) Yes, it's RIAA, the same people that brought you "Napster Bad.", the ones that keep Britney Spears, Aguilera, and Eminem in the public eye, and other musicians out of the public eye.
