Barring some Act of God, FrüCon IV is set to take place *February 17 2001* in Toronto. That's only 6 months away. Only 176 days. Only 4,224...we'll stop now. So. FrüCon IV eh? Yup. You can either start packing your knapsack now - or listen up. The Frucon Committee has some slots to fill. (Yes we are uber-people, but even we have limits) :) Now we are not talking about Con VOLUNTEERS here, (although we certainly need those, that will come later). What we are looking for now is a FEW people to actually plan and execute the con. QUALIFICATIONS We are looking for people who have: *ideas! * the ability to somehow come up with an uncanny amount of TIME and COMMITMENT for this not-so-little shindig BEFORE, DURING *and* AFTER. * regular access to their email (at LEAST twice a week) * easy access to IRC and regular blocks of time in which to have on-line meetings (In the past we've had one "full committee" online meeting each week once planning got into full swing, with email exchanges on specific issues daily.) * been to at least ONE of the previous conventions It would be helpful if you had the resources and free time to either attend a committee meeting in Toronto or some other mutually convenient place. JOB DESCRIPTION * participates in online meetings, email discussions and conference calls to plan Frucon. (In the past we've had one "full committee" online meeting each week once planning got into full swing, with email exchanges on specific issues daily.) * volunteers for and carries out specific tasks as assigned by the committee (e.g., contacting certain vendors, negotiating with caterers or hotels, working with sponsors.) * arrives in Toronto at least one day in advance to perform last-minute tasks and take care of details as needed * other duties as assigned by agreement of the committee or its chairperson. If you are interested in becoming a member of the committee, please email us at frucon@egroups.com with the subject "New Members". Include your complete name, email address and location, as well as a short critique of one of the Frucons that you've attended, including both good and bad points (we are well aware that they were nowhere near perfect). If you have any special skills that you think might be useful, please let us know, but be aware that all members of the committee contribute to most tasks. ***THE DEADLINE IS SEPT 1 2000- **** As always, as we plan the con, we will strive to keep the lines of communication between Früheads and committee open at all times. Each and every idea and comment submitted will be duly considered by the whole committee. In fact, some of the suggestions that could not be incorporated into FruCon III are already in serious consideration for the next FruCon. This event is for all of us Fruheads, so your input is essential. We look forward to hearing from you! Stay tuned for our next posts and keep checking http://frucon.tripod.com ! People do not have to join the Boyscouts, and the > >Boyscouts do not have to let everyone in. It would be nice, but they don't. > >It's their rule. Actually, Steph, the US Supreme Court ruling was far weirder than that. It could not overrule the New Jersey State Supreme Court ruling that stated that the BSA, contrary to its private-organization claim, IS a public organization, and thus is subject to the rules governing public organizations in NJ. The BSA had challenged that NJ State position because it threatened their funding as well as their numerous charters from public schools, police departments and other taxpayer-funded institutions. In that challenge to the NJSC ruling, the USSC ruled that even as a public organization the BSA does have the right to exclude people who express opinions that are antithetical to its stated purpose. Therefore the USSC placed the BSA in the tricky position of claiming that one of its purposes is to discriminate against gays. Nice values, huh? Now before this goes any further let me say that Andrew and Steve are both involved in Scouts, and I'm not seeking to destroy the organization by any means. I want the BSA to get their act together and reform themselves against this poisonous, life-destroying prejudice, which the Scouts I love certainly do NOT share, much as Steph's family does not share it. However, in order to do so, as Trace explained: > the BSA gets a significant portion > of its operating budget (including services like use of congregational > facilities) from ***public*** funds. The BSA also has a Congressional > Charter. Now, I don't know about anyone else here, but I certainly am > uncomfortable with the idea that my government (at any level) may be > subsidizing such an exclusive private organization. If anyone wants any more information on the BSA anti-gay, anti-female, religiously-insistent policy, as well as efforts and strategies to persuade them to overturn it -- or alternately to cut public funding to the organization until the discriminatory stance is renounced -- go to http://www.scoutingforall.org. A *sh!tload* of my arguments on behalf of inclusion can be found on the Action Alert bulletin board there; just do a search for the posting name Lori Martin. And, um, running this little production was one of the reasons why I kind of disappeared off amm-f lately. ;) > It's funny, but after the show, Jian realized that he forgot to mention the > public fund issue onstage. He's been called on it :-) Actually, there was no need to call him on it, and I don't think Trace or I called him on it. He called himself. :) But he was so earnest in wanting to help, and I think the best thing he could have done was exactly what he did do -- mention it. Kudos to Jian (who one Eagle Scout and musician at the rally was just THRILLED to meet. :) I'll see some of you in Ottawa ... like my "daughter" Trace ... - -- Lori Glitter Fairy/Tattooing Fru ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ http://members.aol.com/srm9988n/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Aug 2000 16:06:55 -0400 From: "Kate Leahy" Subject: Re: Review: 8/23/00 @ North Star Bar (long) Heh.
