Oh no you're not. Zard and I were talking about this at the workshops. Fruvous just plain cheats at workshops. It is very annoying. They are such talented performers, but rather than use the opportunity to try something new, they almost always fall back on doing something the is a standard song for them, OR they use the opportunity to be funny, even if it totally violates the spirit of the workshop. > it was a bit of a letdown to me that fruvous chose to focus on > their own humor instead of paying respect to guthrie in a > *guthrie > tribute* workshop (why agree to do a tribute workshop if you only > want to do your own stuff?). Exactly. Couldn't they be bothered to learn a couple of Guthrie tunes? I mean come on, most of them are easy! > the tent song would have fit in perfectly in the Tall Tales > workshop, where they did Boss and Kids (2 songs that were both > done on workshop stages last year anyway) instead. Good thought. I hadn't even thought of that. I was too busy being embarrassed for them at what lame choices Boss and Kids were. We were taking bets on how lame they'd be. They lost. They could have done Marion, Full GEAH, Pork Tenderloin, even Ash Hash, but no. Kids (which isn't even a story-song) and boss. Harumph! > in retrospect, they did kind of the same thing last year, doing > Boss and Killer Tents in the Non-Mushy Love Songs workshop. but > that wasn't a tribute to anyone. promoting your own agenda in a > tribute workshop is just kind of cheesy, IMO. Harsh? You're not harsh at all. I'm not even harsh. Just realistic. I love fruvous as much as anyone, but Anybody who wants to argue that everything they do is pure perfection is in for quite a... um... discussion from me. Funny? yes, of course. it is fruvous and the song itself was great. However, Woody Guthrie is a person worth respecting and i was looking forward to hearing some great Guthrie tunes infused with fruvouses harmony. Ruben James was great. >During Boo Time, I was torn between watching the sign language >interpreter and watching Mike, who was all over the stage. Mike was absolutely wonderful all night; He was even more energetic than usual. I heard more than one comment of "what is that boy *on*?" way to go Mike! >Janis Ian is just bone-crunchingly >amazing live, I whole-heardedly disagree. Well, actually, on, i refrase, she was fine live, but i was disapointed with her attitude. During the song swap she overpowered the othe artists on the stage with her special effects. One of my favorate things about folk festivals is the way the artists back each other up on workshop events. The other song swap did an excellent job of that. In this one it seemed like I heard Janis playing with her wawa pedal and a bunch of accoustic guitars trying desprately to get their voices heard. It didn't seem in the spirit of the festival. They used the "lost Guthrie tune" as an excuse, but all they did was write to the talking blues format. That is not a "Guthrie Tune" it is a traditional folk format. There are lots of talking blues songs out there. [b.] > Irreverence, cleverness, and satire are among Fruvous' strengths; they > played to them. True. I enjoyed the song. I'm just saying that there is a difference between Moxy and the Backstreet Boys, and in my opinion, Moxy is better. I don't go around telling people who like boy bands that their music is crap, because I don't actually think it is, I just think that it's way too media-driven. A lot of my friends don't like Moxy, and that's fine with me. Everyone has a right to their own musical tastes, and that's what makes the world such an interesting place, and what allows all the different kinds of music to exist. - --Kyla ===== Science has yet to prove the existence of randomness. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
