Not too late, I hope! Now, I know y'all are getting hyped up on all the talk about the auction concert, but I figured that this needed to be posted, considering that I wrote it out already and couldn't really get to the ng until now. ::poignant glare at her little brother and evil satan computer:: Anyway, Appel Farm, right. Hey, this concert marks my fourth Fruvous concert. Why that's momentus, I do not know. Well, as usual, the lads did impress. It was more of a sullen, somber crowd than normal Frushows, partially because of the fact that only 75% of the crowd seemed to know who Fruvous was and partially because it was semi-hot/humid outside. But no matter. The guys lived up to their name and that's all that mattered. They opened with a song that I've heard before, but I'm not sure of the name. All I remember about it was that it was a cappella (my FAVOURITE!) and that they plugged C in a BIG honkin' way. (The lyrics were along the lines of "Buy our new disk" while Jian held C up for everyone to see... or C. Heh.) Now, I don't have a set list, but I remember (not in a particular order), MBLABOA (The first time I've heard "I was looking straight." Seemed to scare my friend Katie. ), Pisco, YWGTTM, Lazy Boy, Michy, Guinea Pig, Dancing Queen, If Only You Knew, Minnie, Splatter^2, KoS --> GE&H (Elian intro, "I see dead people"), and the one lone encore was Disco. Some banter included a bit on supporting the Canadian economy and how all the money goes back to the US anyway ("If you see one of us walking around, don't hesitate to give us money to support the Canadian economy. After all, it comes back to you!") There was also a bit of banter about how one of the hotels they stayed in had a few extra buttons on the phone: Room Service, Front Desk (?), and Pizza ("With a little picture of a slice of pizza on it!"). This lead into a pizza improv which was interrupted by someone standing on the sides making "stop" or "I'm choking" (not sure, couldn't tell from where I was) signals with their hands. Why? Not sure, but they restarted the Pizza improv and went directly into Michy. Around KoS a large group of people began to stand up which remained up until the end. The same thing appened at Allentown, if I recall. No one seemed to mind though. I guess that's the known "everyone stand up and dance" song now, huh. Personal Highlights (this is where you people just in it for the review can stop... these are just some things I found personally intriguing): Remember how I said that they were talking about the Canadian economy and we should support it? Well, my friends Dee, Katie and I decided to do just that. So we each got a quarter, pooled them together, and gave them to Jian. I "voulenteered" (victimed) to be the one to talk to him, but the conversation was pretty funny. Jian gave us a weird look and accepted our $0.75 which we later determined he probably spent on some sort of sno cone. (Why? I dunno, 'twas a funny hypothetical situation though.) I also enjoyed meeting Not Dave, and babysitting him. I brought my plastic squeeky man "Doodle" (it's his nick name. His real name is Cornelius Angelus Finklestein III, but we won't go into that), which was called "Pac Man", "The Wal-Mart Guy" and, by Mike Ford, something obscure that I completely forget (Dee, help?). Anyway, he has been tattooed and is pleasantly hanging from the bottom of my bed (it's a loft) where all can see. That's about it. I can't say enough on how much fun it is to see Fruvous, especially after taking the SATs that morning. They (being Fruvous, not the SATs) were defintely the highlight of my week and brought up the mysterious feeling of "happiness" that I recall from days before the period known as "the five weeks until school ends" came along. --Rai --"I'm Brainy!" "I'm Spotty!" ~Doodle's tattooes, by Murray and Mike, in that order. ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~* ~ Canadian Economy (An Impromtu Poem) I wonder if my $0.25 was spent wisely On the Canadian economy. Jian, will it get back to me? Or did you spend it on a sno coney? ------------------------------ Date: 06 Jun 2000 20:43:04 GMT From: spin0za1@aol.commmm (Spin0za1) Subject: Re: Fruvous Auction Show 6/4 Okay, now lets see if I can write about the day itself... Woke up, drank Jasmine tea, (I LOVE LORI!!!) showered, helped Steve Angie and Steph put the stage together and the canopy up, wires and such, did some lawn mowing etc... I felt so useful, like, wow, I'm working tech at a fruvous show! Silly, I know, but fun, muchly. So people start showing up and eventually several of us end up on the porch with Jill's guitar singing Dar Williams and Indigo Girls and Ani DiFranco... the band arrives and most of us keep singing a while longer. We were having fun. At some point I looked in the window and Murray was in the house waving to me. I had to think "God, this is SO ass-backwards! This is just fucked up!" It was a happy moment. :) I went around saying hi to the guys and the fruheads... I gave Jian his birthday present which he seemed to like... which made me happy. I spent some time with the poor dying Bender in the living room, trying (probably unsuccessfully... I'm not too good at it) to comfort and reassure her... Dave was litstening to YWGTTM re-learning lyrics. after Bender went upstairs to the green room where Jian became god for her (and her mother) I stayed on the couch writing in my journal. Eventually we got a 10 minute warning and headed outside. I juggled some shaker-eggs. hehe. I like juggling. :) So the boys came out to play... (sorry, had to say it) they joked that we were putting them through boot-camp with the songs we were requesting... here, again, is the setlist: 1. Lee 2. Love set fire 3. Ash Hash 4. Billy Jian Medley 5. Bittersweet 6. Horseshoes 7. Marion Fruvous 8. Earthquakes 9. Sahara 10. Message (whoo hoo!) 11. Believe, which became a medley Including snippets of : Come on Irene The last time (try at) Can't Explain (who) do wa diddy Hello I love you (doors) (another try at) Can't Explain. 12. Kid's Song 13. The Greatest Man in America 14. Laika 15. Elian's Theme (requested improv... these guys are amazing, I swear!) 16. Nowhere Man 17. Half as Much 18. Thats any good 19. Grunge of Spain (Jill, my neck still hurts. (: ) 20. Fell In Love At some point Jill made a Simpson's reference... that the guys didn't immediately recognize. It was amusing. The third time Lawrence's name got pulled from the hat he passed it off to "the other Solomon" (Thank you, Lawrence... why AREN'T you my brother???) so I introduced myself as Gella, Frujuggla or variations of Laughing Spinoza... to which Mike said "Wow! 'Laughing Spinoza???' Wow!" heh! So happy! So I told my story... I'm the director of my school's a cappella club so I'd wanted to do at least one Fruvous song... so I listened to this song on Live Noise about 10,000,000 times, wrote it out, adapted it for SATB and we performed it and it was a big hit, so I'd really like to hear I've Gotta Get a Message to You. Jian said That was a really good introduction, Gella. It was consice and to the point... and they seemed a bit pleased by the request. I was pleased that I got them off-mic. They were amazing. I may be biased... but I think they very nearly nailed it. It was beautiful. Post show stuff... I did a bad thing. A bunch of us went over to talk to Murray... he signed Jill's yearbook... I gave him a big hug... Jill said Group hug!... and I started to cry. OOPS! shit... I pulled away and said, oh, damn, um... I'm going to run away now. So i did... to the dining room... where Dave then showed up and started eating shrimp. He said hey, Gella, how's it going? So what've you been reading lately? I had a lovely long relaxed conversation with him and felt much better. I went back outside eventually... slightly avoiding Murray for the moment... went back inside, thought of skulking in the kitchen, but Mike was there examining the french magnetic poetry on the fridge. So I headed for the living room... but there was Murray sitting barefoot on the floor about to play this Wu Tang game... gosh darn it. So I hid in the dining room... until Murray and Tobey walked in and started eating. Murray saw me and smiled. I apologized for leaking on him. Tobey said something along the lines of "what, did you drool on him?" To which I replied "a little higher up" Murray asked if I wanted to watch them play. I had actually wanted to sit in the living room and write in my journal so I asked would that be okay... if I just sat quietly? he said yeah, you could even sit loudly. We're loud people. So I sat there while Tobey and Murray played a wonderfully violent game writing in my journal. a crowd started to gather so I put away the journal and took out my jewelry making stuff. Murray was called out for a photo-op and Tobey for a signing and that was when I kicked Lawrence's ass with a large hammer. :) After a while I went back outside where Jian was just having a ball dancing with Amanda and Trace. Mike was boogying along too. He boogied over to me and we started talking about medications and vaccinations for boogie fever... he asked about school and gave me tips on how to get my teachers to let me take make-up tests. Eventually it was time for them to leave so I got my last minute hugs (more lovin' Tobey?) they piled into the van and drove off. We cleaned up the backyard a bit and Lori Amanda Anita and Trace and I went upstairs and talked. It's not a very good review, I know... but I can't explain most of what's in my head right now. I can't remember ever being happier. je touche le requin dans le tourbillon mechanique au l'aquarium immense moment de frission doux et ridicule - -Mike Ford (hehe) Gella ------------------------------ Date: 06 Jun 2000 20:45:15 GMT From: brassgrl70@aol.com (Brassgrl70) Subject: RE: OT: Authors George Orwell -Animal Farm A great little book that you wont be able to put down Kurt Vonnegut - SlaughterHouse 5 fun if Graphic!! My best girl friend's guy is wicked controlling. Not that I see her anymore or anything. Sorry, moment of not being bitter creeped in there. It sounds like you had a lot of fun though. And I definitely know what you mean about needing to come down slowly and stuff. When my dad picked me up from leadership camp this past summer, I got home and i was like oh my god...no...this is bad. and when my band got back from New York, it was really late, so I just went straight to bed. But the next morning I woke up and everyone wasn't right down the hall in the next rooms and stuff. I was wicked sad. And I got up and the only ones around were obviously my family. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love my family, but it would have been easier to deal with if I'd had people sleep over or something, so I could gradually mix band and family and then wean myself. Hey, Gella, just out of curiosity, were you friends with your boyfriend before you got together? I'm working on this theory paper thing, about how it affects relationships if you were friends with the person you were going out with before you got together vs. if you sorta knew each other's names or met at a dance or something and then hooked up. The guy I like is one of my good friends. (And doesn't like me back, by the way. We've talked about it. On the plus side that's how good of friends we are, I can tell him about stuff like that and he won't freak. I don't really know if I would go out with him though, given the chance. It might ruin our friendship. But that's a later part of the theory paper.) But he's the only research I have for the paper so far and any experiences anyone could give me would be helpful. I won't use names. If anyone could help me out and tell me how long you've been with your significant other, or how long you've liked a friend or a "stranger", and why you like them (particularly if you like someone you don't really know) it would be really helpful. It would be cool if you'd tell me a little about your relationship like how you get along and who chooses what to do or if it's mutual and stuff, but that's getting even more personal than I already am, so only share that with me if you feel comfortable with it. And if you wanna include if you get along with an ex and any theories you may have on why you do or why you don't get along, I'd love you even more. :) I know I'm asking a lot, but I don't know who else to ask other than some friends I need to talk to. Geez, I've been asking so much from you guys lately. Sorry. :) Thanks! - -------------> Ln ------------------------------ Date: 6 Jun 2000 21:52:55 GMT From: oconnell@pobox.upenn.edu (Kathy O'Connell) Subject: Re: I love my boss/Brazil? (and everybody else here!) I've been enjoying all your literary suggestions. I am obsessed with books (or at least I used to be until I started this program I'm in which leaves me precious little time to read....), but I will try to narrow down my list of suggestions. Reading material I have recently been blown away by: * Captain Corelli's Mandolin - L. de Bernieres (I laughed, I cried, I bit my nails) * The Hundred Secret Senses - Amy Tan * the Harry Potter series * Dorothy Parker's poetry and short stories (very funny/sarcastic/clever - all the more interesting considering the status of women in her time) Some of my favourites: * I have to reiterate: READ THE PRINCESS BRIDE * stuff by P.G. Wodehouse. His use of the English language is remarkable and hysterically funny. Gives you a good idea of the 1930s British aristocracy as well, but portrays them as buffoons, while the "lower" classes are actually the _real_ people. * (if you're into classics) anything by Jane Austen, Alexandre Dumas and Daphne Du Maurier (but especially Rebecca) * Did someone already suggest Bridget Jones' Diary? I made an idiot of myself laughing out loud on the bus while reading this. * Watership Down - kids book but much more. * kids poetry by Shel Silverstein - silly and creative and funny and enjoyable. The drawings are half the fun. * The Color Purple - Alice Walker - I still like this on multiple readings. * if you like murder mysteries, i've enjoyed Ellis Peters, Timothy Holme, P.D. James, Sir A.C. Doyle (of course!), Tony Hillerman, Agatha Christie, and Dashiel Hammett. *The Talented Mr. Ripley - Patricia Highsmith - ignore the poor movie adaptation (Matt Damon? I don't think so!) Hope this helps. have a great day, Sanjita On 3 Jun 2000, MoxyOne22 wrote: > I'm looking expand my readings, and was interested in getting some suggestions > on some good authors and/or books in the range of literary fiction. > > You can e-mail me directly, or discuss... > > Kelley > ------------------------------ Date: 07 Jun 2000 01:31:46 GMT From: leaben@aol.comBender (Leah Bender) Subject: Re: Fruvous Auction Show 6/4 Oh, geez...
