("They say the midway lights are bright... in Herndon.") comments about the library the doubled as a planetarium (there was a library near the concert area and it had a giant domed roof) comments about it being a placebo ("For those who don't know, a placebo is a building without any books in it.") Brown Eyed Girl (which was good to hear again) was introduced as "a song we wrote back in 1920." I thought it was very odd to hear Substitute at the end (the other times I've heard it it's been the opener) but it was good to hear it... The sound system could have been a lot better, though... the acoustic guitar sounded really terrible during some songs (like Nuits) I think that's all from me. I'm sure I'll remember something more later. :) - -- lawrence solomon * http://www.fruhead.com/users/zaph * zaph@fruhead.com "And I don't know whether I believe in me, but I still believe in my friends." -The Nields ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Jun 2000 02:21:26 -0400 From: Tom Fazzio Subject: Dirty books (was Re: King of Spain) Lauren Seyler wrote: > I saw a book in a thrift shop entitled "In Bed with the Boss", and I bought > for 33 cents. The Maggies have made it into the final countdown of songwriting contest called Garageband.com. This is really a great thing! Here's what happens next: "Wrong" a Maggies song will be reviewed against the other songs in "The Final Countdown - June 2000" multiple times. Every band will get the exact same number of reviews. A special rankings page will display who's getting the best reactions from reviewers. Once all of the reviews have been submitted the band that's in the number one spot wins a $250,000 recording contract. It's as simple as that. (from garageband.com) You may also want to start spreading the word to have fans support you in the contest. You're welcome to invite as many fans as you like, but be sure to remind them to review fairly -- we can detect people who are abusing the system and not playing fair. If you have a few minutes go to www.garageband.com and check out the Maggies and the other music that is competing in this contest. It was hot enough out! I just wanted to comment on last night's Herndon Festival. After about 7 Fruvous shows for me, I had never before seen them outside in their element. It was such great atmosphere with the carnival rides lighting up the background and the planetarium/library making for such funny banter. I also wanted to thank the group of dancing girls who decided to run to the front of the stage for KOS...it inspired me to run up too (well, stand up and step a foot forward to the gate)..but the point is you got us all dancing! No sooner had I pulled my friend up there, we were surrounded by the happy dancing crowd. That was what every one had been dying to do all evening, ya know? Dance! We all got up at the right time too... Green Eggs and Ham was awesome and Disco Bargainville and good danceable covers. Have a great weekend every one! The best book I've read in a long time is "High Fidelity" by Nick Hornby, which was a best-seller LONG before it was a hit movie. I'm relatively well-read, but less than half of it is in English. This book is by far the best I've read in this language :) mcee ------------------------------ Date: 03 Jun 2000 01:04:56 GMT From: bbwminors@aol.com (BBWMinors) Subject: Re: yes, i was just wearing a scarf I thought the "dancing girls" group (I believe they were from UMBC since they were sitting in front of me at beginning of show and were very nice) had perfect timing ... earlier and I might have felt mildly ticked that my view was suddenly blocked (one of them was about 6-1). But instead, we got up and danced with them for the final few numbers of the show ... I somehow failed to notice the person in "just the scarf" though ... my bad! I was sitting with FruPrincess in her little tie-dyed shirt on a blanket about center stage, second row of people back. HOPING I got good pix (no flash so took about three rolls in first few numbers as well as sound check). I just have to say how truly HAPPY I am when I watch Fruvous. I'm a little sad now that I have no other shows officially planned in near future (couldn't do Vault as hoped tonight because of real life intrusion) ... but if anyone in band is reading this (highly doubtful I realize) ... thank you for giving me some of my happiest moments. OK, done being goofy. Umberto Eco: _The Name of the Rose_. It's partly a tale of fanaticism and its dangers, the uneasy relationship between rationality and religion, and historical novel about heresies. It's also partly a rollicking good whodunit. Margaret Atwood: Really anything of hers is good, but I liked _Cat's Eye_ best. She has a poet's control of imagery and a dramatist's sense of tension. Carol Bly: _The Tomcat's Wife_, a collection of short stories set in the midwest. Lorrie Moore: "You're Ugly, Too," a painfully funny short story about being a single career woman. Joyce Carol Oates: _We Were the Mulvaneys_. I'm usually a pretty analytical reader (drummed over the head in college, etc.), so I take notice when a book affects me emotionally in the way that this story of a tragically--and very plausibly--messed up family did. Phyllis Moore: "Rembrandt's Bones," a short story that appeared in the Winter 1999 issue of _The Georgia Review_. I've been trying to find more of her stuff ever since. As always, I'm eager to see what other people have on their lists, too. - -Rachel ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET!
