(Actually, it looks like it will be a backyard folk festival.) I'd like to let other people know what happened, because from reading the wall archive at FHDC I know some people were feeling left out. I guess that's inevitable when there's a very limited attendance figure on an event, but I'd hate for anyone to think there was anything intentionally elitist or exclusive about the proceedings that brought together the winning group. On Thursday afternoon, May 4, Fruvous announced in the XPN studio that they were donating their time to WXPN, which could auction off an "Intimate House Party" with them on June 4 (performing, or doing chores, or wainscoting, or whatever). Immediately, Philadelphia-area Fruheads sprang to action. I was running a carpool at the time, listening on the car radio; by the time I got home there already were multiple newsgroup posts, and bidding was up to $1000. One of the newsgroup posts was from Gingee, suggesting that while the house party would be out of the financial range of most lone Fruheads, there was nothing in the rules that stopped a group of Fruheads from banding together in a bidding effort. Steve and I had been talking about the same thing, so I checked the rules at XPN's website and found that Gingee was correct. There was, however, the specification that no tickets could be sold. Hence, we concluded, there could be no "minimum" contribution from any group member. I replied to Gingee's post, suggesting that we follow her plan, and that anyone interested should email us both and we'd see if a group effort could work. Within a few hours 15 people had replied -- many of whom are unknown to me and/or Gingee (we still haven't even met each other) -- indicating what they thought was a reasonable contribution for them, for this special-event fundraiser for an organization Fruvous supports, in their financial/life circumstances. Essentially, it was applied socialism. And the group that became known as the "fruheadcontinuum" was off the ground. With 20 slots still available on the team, we entered our first bid Friday morning. I also sent an email to all Fruheads in a 200-mile radius of Philadelphia whose email addresses I had, telling them what we were doing, that it was socialist/egalitarian in nature, and asking if they were interested in joining. A scattershot approach? Yes, of course. I don't know all @2000 Fruheads registered on FHDC. I counted on the newsgroup posts, FHDC wall chatter, and other channels to let others know that we were trying to make a run at this, and that they were welcome to join the effort. Bidding skyrocketed over the weekend -- but so did interest in joining the team, from some people who had received my email, and from others previously unknown to either me or Gingee. By the end of the weekend almost all slots were filled. At that point donations finally exceeded the level to which bidding had leapt early in the weekend, so we put in another bid, figuring we needed to keep our name in the game at least. That bid brought even more interest, and by Monday evening we had a waitlist going. At that point we were expecting bidding to keep climbing, and a few team members already had decided that, in the eventuality that we didn't win the auction, we'd have a huge Fruhead party anyway, with an unlimited, open-to-any-Fruhead-who-wanted-to-hang-with-us guestlist, and Proxy Fruvous, and a donation tureen for WXPN. (Theme: "How many people here consider themselves a loser?") As the week went on, some of the personnel shifted, and some people moved up the waitlist onto the team. All slots were filled strictly on a first-come-first-served basis, not according to level of indicated contribution (besides being petty, that could have been considered selling tickets.) I was glad to see people moving up the waitlist, because I didn't want people who wanted to participate to be deprived of that opportunity just because bidding had been driven well beyond the reach of most individuals within just two days. I believe some waitlisters also tried to form their own team, and I was glad to see that initiative on their part. Unfortunately, we also had some people contacting us very late in the game -- as late as Wednesday night/Thursday morning, when bidding closed at 8:15 am on Thursday -- and at that point our waitlist was so long that moving up through it and onto the team looks pretty unrealistic. The outcome of the auction was that our Sunday night bid held up all week, and won. The outcome of this group of people coming together is just starting to assert itself, however. It's a varied group -- ages range from 14 to 40ish; participants live from Ohio to New York City to DC; we are rather disproportionately female; we are students and artists, homemakers and bankers, teachers and technology professionals. There is a lot of energy being directed at the planning aspects of the event just now. But what really impresses me about the whole thing is how a quixotic, idealistic, some would say highly impractical vision of how to build a pipe dream became reality for so many people. There has been so much enthusiasm and cooperation, not only among the team members, but from others who were unable to participate because of scheduling conflicts, but who wished us nothing but the best. One Fruhead who couldn't be present for the concert/party offered to contribute a significant sum of money anyway, if that would help us hold the winning bid. Others sent their good-luck wishes, and later their congratulations. Another bidder even wished us luck. Maggie and a few other newsgroupers were talking about a Fruhead commune a week or two ago. Over the past 7 days, I've witnessed one being born, and it's been a revelation. This was a hands-on lesson in group cooperation and unselfishness that no social sciences text could ever demonstrate. I am amazed by these people, by what they managed to set in motion and achieve in 7 days, and by how they all were able to focus on the big picture and their own part in it -- what the event was worth to them as individuals, what they felt was reasonable and not burdensome for them to contribute, not only financially but in time and mental energy -- and not on what anyone else was or was not able to offer financially for the same event. Regardless of the numbers, which actually achieved a fair degree of parity despite the members' huge life-situation differences, everyone seems to accept the premise that everyone else also is contributing fully; "from each according to ability, to each according to need." And I think that is *so* cool. :) I always have been an economic idealist -- but now I know that a utopian economy, an economy not just of dollars but of resources and talents and commitment, *can* work, at least among people of mutual goodwill and common goals, without placing a disproportionate burden on any individual. I hope that sharing, cooperative, unselfish spirit continues through the next three weeks as we plan this thing -- and that others can experience some similar project at some point. - -- Lori Glitter Fairy/Tattooing Fru ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ this is my world don't take it away ------------------------------ Date: 14 May 2000 04:12:22 GMT From: spychicr@aol.compoot (Rai-Marie) Subject: Re: Upper Ontario <> <<>>The names of the cities/towns>> <> Did they name the stores after the town or the town after the stores? --Rai --Froggy. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Rai is an egotistical, want-everything brat.
