Basically, what ARE the rules of politeness and civility in >regards to set lists??? it doesn't sound like dana did anything wrong. i wouldn't worry about that. before i got into fruvous, i had never even seen anyone grab a setlist at a show before. i knew people did it, but i was just never that in on a club band's scene before. i would have assumed that it was terribly rude to take the setlist before the show was completely over. i mean, why would they make one up if they didn't want it there for the whole show? realistically, though, i've figured out that given the (large) number of times they glance at the thing during a show, and the (relatively small) number of songs they ever close with, it's probably not going to throw them off much if it's gone when they come out for the last encore. and my show experience seems to bear that out. they're all usually gone before the second encore, if not the first. and no one seems to find this strange or unacceptable. so, i guess that's an ok thing to do. i don't really get the setlist mystique, myself. i've grabbed one for someone else a couple of times. but to me, it's a souvenir that has nothing to do with my being at the show. my own ticket stub is a more meaningful souvenir to me. but then, i'm strange. i don't care for autographs, either. ;) peace, ellen (oh, look. a famous person's name scrawled illegibly on my shirt. whee.) * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet's Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet - Free! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 May 2000 07:48:41 -0700 (PDT) From: Bridget Subject: Re: Setlists (was Re: Toads Place Review 5/7/00) - --- BBWMinors wrote: > > Basically, what ARE the > rules of politeness and civility in > regards to set lists??? In a perfect world... nobody would go for a setlist until the show is *completely* over - when the house lights come up, as Mark puts it. A good point that a lot of you have made, however, is that you shouldn't touch them until *after* the show is completely over! I don't even like to look at a setlist when I'm standing close enough to the stage that I can see it during the show. I'd rather be surprised if they pull out something rare. When they're performing, just enjoy the show. Get obsessive about stuff like setlists after they're off. I've also grabbed the occasional guitar pick (which do get used!) when they leave one on stage, with the blessing of mike, who used the pick. > A setlist is a good souvenir from a show. I really like the way Bela Fleck does it. When he performs, he has printed copies of the setlist made up for the band, and they always make a bunch so that people who want can get them after the show. My first frushows were in my homestate of Colorado a few years back. The lads were opening up for the Nields at each of those gigs and they were definitely very laid back shows. Not too many people at each of 'em and very, very few people that were there to see the lads and not the nields. The only other place i had seen the lads playing was in Cali. So i was definitely a west-coast-fruhead When I moved to NYC last year, however, i was shocked when i got to my first east-coast frushow. Totally different experience. The energy level was completely different - not more or less - just different. The people were completely different. But most apparent to me was just how different the attitudes of the east-coast fruheads were. Whoa there, and then after going to my first frucon this year - i was ready to never go to another frushow *unless* it was west coast again. First and foremost, the setlist was a nice mix of old and new. Of course, they started with the first four songs from Wood, but after they diverged from that album, the mood picked up. This was my first time hearing Guinea Pig (which will be on the upcoming C album), and I think it is a pretty cute song. Also, it was my first time experiencing Ash Hash live. And, for those of you who have seen them perform this, you know why I chose to call it an experience. The crowd was very curteous; probably one of the quietest crowds in recent memory. In fact, in some of the calculated pauses (such as during Boss), we were all quiet instead of whooping and hollering like usual. I think that threw off Jian a little, but I think that overall it was a nice departure from what the norm seemed to be. It was nice to see some of the same crew there (Chris, Vika, etc.), and great to talk to Tobey and the boys again. I still can't believe that Jian remembers me... =) Anyway, the show was cool, but I do have to say that the Toad's Place show the next night completely and utterly rocked, making this show look pale in comparison.
