But it turned out okay; I had a good time, and met a good group of people. Getting money from schools is definitely a boon, but make sure they've got courses there you want to take, and things you want to study. If you know you're wanting to pursue a particular major, compare the schools on that level. What kind of living arrangements do they offer? Do they have clubs, sports, or activities that you want to join or participate in? I'm a grad student at University of Maryland (hi, again!), and I have to say that I really like it here. The school is *immense* (30-35,000 students, compared to my undergrad school which had under 2,000!), but the faculty are top-rate. (If you're looking to do criminology or criminal justice [my field], this is the place to do it.) Also, you might check the U.S. News and World Report rankings published every year (I believe they also keep them on their web site); they include axes like social scene, men/women ratio (if it matters, ;) ), type of community, that kind of thing. Good luck! (if you end up at Maryland, give a yell, I'd be happy to direct you to the nearest Fru-friendly locations!) - - Kate (the other Kate!) College admissions are weird. On the one hand, Maryland won't even let me into their Honors program (although I'm working on it -- my GPA apparently wasn't high enough, thanks to a full schedule of IB classes). On the other, I've gotten around $115000 total in scholarship offers from various other institutions. Cool as Batman might be, he has no superpowers, just a lot of toys. Plus his theme song, whether you go for the Danny Elfman or the goofy '60s version, can't even hope to match Spiderman's. I am the lucky girl who > gets to call SUNY Geneseo her alma mater. Hey HEy - not sure how we got onto this topic buuut... I've got like 10 minutes till i'm meeting up with my friends so I think i'll share my story just cause it's fun. I only applied to a few schools - I don't know what it was but i really wasn't into the whole college search thing... all i knew was that i was going to go to either LA or NYC. That really disappointed my parents who both went to Stanford and had always assumed i'd follow in their footsteps *sigh* So when Columbia and USC sent me stuff, I applied. Then when a little film school (loyola-marymount) just outside of LA wrote me a letter and told me they'd give me a full ride (this was based on my brainses, not swimming) - all i had to do was check the "YES!" box on the return letter - i applied there *grin* So there it was - December somethingth - and I was satisfied... until the swim coach from NYU called me up and started talking to me. Mind you, I had absolutely no interest whatsoever in this school because I thought it was just for over-zealous drama and film type people... and in addition to that - i thought i'd finished my swimming career and had no intentions of doing it for another four years. but the coach told me that if I just filled out an application and sent it in before the 31st, I'd be set - mind you, the 31st was two days away. I probably didn't sound too excited about the whole idea of writing another bs essay but when the coach said that NYU would fly me out for a "recruit trip" - which was basically an all-expense paid adventure to NYC for a week... i sent my papers in. I thought, "YEAH! I'll go to NYC, catch a few concerts and then go home - then stick it to NYU and their swim team when I tell them that I'm not going there! haha!" A month later - the swim coach from St. Lawrence U. in upstate-NY gives me a call and says something about how he saw my times and they really needed me there - yaddayadda... i didn't even have to fill out an application just needed to say yes or no. So, I explained to him that I wanted to be in a city blahblah, not sure that the school was right for me - i'd have to see the campus to decide. With that - I got recruit trip #2. This was, mind you, my first trip to Canada as well since they flew me into - I want to say Montreal cause it was the closest airport - but that trip was such a daze, i can't member... Anyways, I think i remember there being a frushow in Syracuse the weekend I went and i thought - "hey i'll just have someone drive me down there" <---that plan never worked itself out. Anyways... i was not impressed with the school to say the least so i told 'em sorry and jetted back home... I got accepted to all of the schools and of course, LM with the full ride was tempting but there really wasn't anything there that i wanted to study so i threw that one out the window. (first rule to anyone of you seniors in HS that are deciding - don't go to a school unless they have some program you want to pursue!!). USC and Columbia were equally cheap to me... ok, not really, they offered me a lot of cash but i'm reeeally po' (come on, i have to pay my tuition, not mommy and daddy) and there was just no way... NYU seemed so much more appealing after my recruit trip (i saw that it wasn't how i had stereotyped it) and when they offered me close to the full boat i'm sitting on now - i couldn't pass it up *grin* So whether you call it my "safety" school or not... I ended up here at NYU just by chance and I couldn't be happier. I'm also really glad that I'm swimming just because it's really gotten me a lot of stuff (they fly us to other states just for meets and competitions)... not to mention the two week, all-expense paid "training" trip we got to puerto rico over winter break... ohhhh yeah, that was nice! :D take it easy, JordAN! http://www.geocities.com/tmbgirl.geo/ np: the semantics <--check 'em out, check 'em totally out!!!
