You're looking at a girl who ended up at her safety though she got into her first three choices (Holy Cross, Georgetown, and Dartmouth) but didn't get any money. I guess it depends on what you want to study, really. UMD is a great university system. Rochester is cold. Lehigh is in the middle of nowhere (but has a great party scene). Go with your heart. Take another visit to these places and go with what you feel . . . that's the best advice I can give :). - --Kate - -- Kate Leahy kleahy@loyola.edu katiewow@fruhead.com "And in all the idiots I see Thoughtless men casting doubts on me . . . Good Lord, Shelly/Leah, what have we started here? For Erica and other inquisitive types, it's Leah's fabulous scrabble word that has come to be a term of endearment or, sometimes, another way of calling yourself/someone else a dork or something like that, especially on the wall at, like, 1 am. There's also something about all Fruheads being connected to one big batnose brain, and so sometimes on the wall, "batnose" takes the place of going thru that whole "personal jinx, no you can't talk til somebody says your name" thing. So there, I've unraveled the glorious mystery :) >Shelly S(who can't WAIT to infect the NG/FHDC with OTHER words we've >used/created) Now if we get the ng talking about *Batman*, I will consider that my greatest accomplishment! Would someone kindly describe what their music and live > shows are like? Merci d'avance. They Might Be Giants is very good. The band started way back in the mid 80's with John Linnell and John Flansburgh and their drum machine. They had a very unique sound for the time, a kind of minimalist pop with very creative vocals that sometimes bent over into the absurd. MTV picked up a couple of their early songs ("Don't Lets Start" and "Put Your Hand Inside The Puppethead") but things went quiet on the mass acceptance front after that until their third album, _Flood_ which contains the songs most people know by They Might Be Giants ("Instanbul (not Constantinople)" and "Particle Man"). It also contains "Birdhouse in Your Soul" which hit big in the UK. Before their 5th album, the band shifted away from it's minimalistic pop sound and rang up a full band, including brass section to accompany the accordian/sax/keyboard playing of Linnell and the guitar playing of Flansburgh. Anyways, I enjoy their music very much. They can be considered Geek Rock pretty much and hopefully they'll play to that MIT show like it's something special. They do live tricks that are great the first and second time, but get a bit stale after 2 years of doing them, but I figure you can identify with that if you've seen Fruvous enough *grin*. But anyways, I recommend checking TMBG out definitely. Even though the interesting instrumentation of Bari Sax, Guitar and Drum Machine has turned into a more standard keyboard, guitar, drum kit, bass, and rhythm guitar, the creative lyrics are still top notch. - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 20:16:22 GMT From: Frances Fox Subject: OT; re: Dr Who >Oh, there IS just one other question - who'll make me tapes of the >broadcasts? ;) Ok, Ok, anyone wanting copies of the broadcasts, just let me know. By then I should have my own place & my own stereo system (we tend to have classical music playing all day long at my parents home- not that I have anything against classical, especially when it's coming from quadrophonic speakers!!). I will probably need a reminder though- 2001 is a long way off! Does anyone have a copy of Fruvous' "America's National Game" from the 4/30/99 NPR radio show they'd be willing to trade? Also, does anyone know about when Moxy made the commercials for Southwest Airlines? And finally, is anyone from NY City planning a road trip to Northampton next month that might have room for 2 fruheads? Gas would be taken care of. If you can help me with any of these, email me at wbowen@winston.com. No need to tie up the group I think. Anyway it was kinda neat to see a Mountie actually on a horse (no wait > that was in the protest march in TO, never mind!) Ooh! Ooh! I have a funny Mountie Moment too, eh! I was directing a documentary on Tory Cassis last fall and while my crew and I were shooting Tory perform at the Street Party on Yonge one Sunday morning, there was this guy on stilts, dressed as a Mountie. He went by behind us just as Tory was singing "You Never Will" --- which ended up have the line "Every passing... *mountie*... seems much longer than the last". Which is only funny I guess if you know the song... Anyway, it made it in our doc. Wheee!
