HEy HEY! So when i saw this thread i kind of rolled my eyes and thought i'd move on but after reading a few responses I realized that I'd never actually thought about this one... so now i'm gonna share my 3 cents. My first show was at swallow hill in my home town of denver, colorado... Mind you, they played in the small room at swallow hill that night (which means there really weren't that many people there). I brought 15 of my friends with me to the show and we made up a tremendous portion of the audience... Anyways, we were all about going mad crazy during their set and when, in the middle of the show, Jian started singing "particle man" (just look at my screenname) i was super- duper souped. So anyways... after the show we went out into the lobby so that my friends could buy all sorts of mad fru-gear. When we saw a few of the guys in the band standing in the lobby we were like "Wha?" all confused as to why they were just standing around and chilling with their fans but i was like "whatever, they're here... i'm gonna go talk to 'em" and dragged my friends over so they could get their gear signed. We headed over to Jian first and just waited there till he was done talking to some other fans and when Jian looked up and saw our group he's like "are you TMBGgirl?" i was like "jigga-wha?!" and realized that he'd read my post to the NG that day saying that I'd be at the show... anyways, Ji gave me his setlist :) and from that point on i've just thought it was really cool that a member of the band is that chill with their fans. And the fact that like, he can remember who all these people are is pretty damn impressive but it makes you feel like they actually appreciate the fact that you're there supporting 'em and spreading the word, ya know? it's enough to get me back to the shows with as many new people as i can drag along, i guess. And also why i think i tend to like Ji more than the other guys (not like i'm one to really judge since i've hardly met any of them) merely because he appears to be the most outgoing of all the lads. Don't get me wrong tho - to me it's all about the music and this is all just kind of an added bonus... So now i'm left to wonder if the band's tactics of talking to their fans after the shows and being chums with them isn't like super tricky of 'em. Because it's kind of like the way i feel about bands that my friends are in... maybe you get to a point where like, you feel obligated to go to their shows and stuff... just forget about the music and plan on just chilling with them after the gig. take it easy, special J! http://www.geocities.com/jodapuff/ <--new site! http://www.geocities.com/tmbgirl.geo/ <--old site Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy. ------------------------------ Date: 20 Mar 2000 01:18:43 GMT From: spin0za1@aol.commmm (Spin0za1) Subject: RE: help fishgirls & Ji-heads What do I like about Jian? Well, okay, first let me say that I love all of the lads equally and immensely and in very different ways... but I think I have spent more total hours thinking about Jian than the rest of them put together. (And don't get me wrong, I think about all of them a hell of a lot) Lets see if I can sort out why. Here's a story that some of you have heard: (warning: it's long) One night not too long ago I wrote a long post to the newsgroup about going to Fruvous shows that ended up being a rather emotional gush about how much I love them and how they get me through all sorts of shit and yadda yadda yadda... we've all heard it and/or lived it. So, I got lots of responses from people both on the ng and via e-mail about how I'd expressed exactly what they felt yadda yadda yadda. So I printed out a copy and I brought it to the next concert I went to, dec. 1 at the Westbeth. After the show as Mike walked out I caught up with him and handed the folded bit of paper to him. I asked him if he could please read it at his liesure. He took it from me and left. So Jian came out a bit later. I waited while he signed autographs and such, I took a picture of him with Heather for her, and then I walked up to talk to him. Not wanting to make too much of an ass of myself (though I think with me it's impossible) I decided not to say all the things I wanted to say, instead I just said "um, hi. Um, can I like, talk to you as if you were the entire band and just say thanks for existing?" he looked a bit puzzled. "uh, sure." "Oh, okay. Thanks for existing. (pause) I'm Gella, by the way." "Yeah, I know. We've met... um, three times, right?" I was totally shocked. "uh, yeah. Three times. Exactly. um, wow. Okay, bye." He'd remembered me. It just totally freaked me out. So anyway, the next night they did No No Raja and I was stationed directly in front of where Jian was sitting with the Doumbek. After the song during the applause he was saying thank you, thank you... he caught my eye and smiled "Thank you, Gella." I nearly cried. After the show when he came out I decided fuck it. I don't care if I make an ass of myself, I have to tell him. I went to him and waited for him to turn to me. He did and I started to stammer out how I wanted to tell him this because I didn't know when I'd see him again... that Moxy Fruvous had just gotten me through so much bad shit over the past year and I just needed him to know how much I appreciated them and how much I loved them. I looked at him and saw that he was smiling. The reached out to me and gave me the warmest hug I'd ever recieved. "Thank you, Gella. Take care of yourself, okay? We'll see each other again soon." I thought I could never again be as happy as I was at that moment. I was wrong. New Years Eve at the Tralf. After the show Jian came out and was immediately surrounded. I started towards him and then thought better of it and sat on the edge of the stage. When he saw me he told someone else to hang on a sec and he came over to me. "Hey, Gella, right?" "yeah..." "That letter that was typed and had stuff about you and your sister at the Keswick and had no name on it... that was from you, right?" ( the print out I handed to Mike at the Westbeth) "yeah" he smiled at me. "I framed it. It is literally in a frame in my home. I showed it to Dar Williams, I show it to everyone..." I just hug him to keep from crying. I barely manage to whisper "Thank you Jian. For everything." He gave me one last beautiful smile and went back to his fans. Well, okay, two little stories. What does it all mean? I guess what it means is that Jian has given me these little moments of intense happiness that I can just slip into and remember and live in when life is evil. And he pays attention, and he listens, and he remembers, and he cares. So I love him. And I love all of them. The end. :) "To believe that knowledge is ignorance is noble. Peace of Mind [1] Killer Tents That's Any Good Follow the Road America's National Game Pisco Bandito Disco Bargainville Believe [2] > 2.a) Is it *really* only gonna be available at shows or through the fan > club? Probably for awhile at least. With short shelf life stuff and possibly only being 20-30 minutes in length, having record label backing for an actual release may not be worth it. If it does well on internet sales through MFHQ and at shows, the respective labels may pick it up. To the best of my knowledge this is the same path that "b" followed. > b) Do shows include folk festivals? Heck yeah! > c) Are they gonna be at the Winnipeg Folk Fest this year? Ever > again? Tour dates that we know of are posted on FDC. Nothing so far about Winnipeg. > d) Anyone know what price it'll be? Probably same as the "b" album (whatever that is). > 3.
