Even if we could lower gas prices for a while by staging a gas out, it doesn't solve the *real* problem. The real problem is that this society is so oil dependent. At a time when American are climbing all over each other to drive super huge gas guzzlers, the oil folks have us over a barrel - pun intended. They can charge us whatever they want. Now, if we could reduce our dependence on oil in a more permanent fashion, we might be getting somewhere. That's why we should urge Ford, GM, and Chevy to make cars that get better gas mileage. Other automakers are now ready to mass-produce cars that get up to 60 mpg - why can't Detroit? I think that was probably my "first" album that started me down the road of TMBG, Fruvous, and all the other bands I like now... (although I got it on a tape copied from a friend's CDs first, then went out and bought the CD once I decided I liked it :) I guess I shouldn't count all the records (that's right, those big usually black things with grooves that were about 11 and 3/4 inches in diameter :) I had when I was much younger - I used to go to sleep to them... so my first album was probably a tape of some kind, but I can't remember what it was. I know that one of the first CDs my family got (back when we first got a CD player in December, 1987 - and we still have it) that I really liked was The Beach Boys' Endless Summer... I was really "into" them for quite a while (had a LOT of their albums, which unfortunately all got stolen recently and are now out of print[1], and even saw them in concert[2] back when most of them were still alive), and from there got into listening to oldies and stuff, and then in 1994[3] I first heard TMBG and sort of abandoned my former musical interests in favor of something that might be considered a little more "normal" for someone my age... now I like it all, and tend to switch between 3 or 4 radio stations in the car. :) [1] I say it's unfortunate because, even though I hadn't really listened to them since about 1993, I realised, especially after watching the ABC 4-hour special about them, that I still really do like their music, especially the later stuff... and now I want to be able to hear it again, and not in some silly "best of" format... [2] that was my first concert, too [3] actually, I first heard TMBG in 1991, but didn't know it was TMBG, and was afraid to ask, for fear of being made fun of for not knowing - -- lawrence solomon * http://www.fruhead.com/users/zaph * zaph@fruhead.com "You knew it was true, when I held you, there were no secrets.
