In German, that'd be an "umlaut", with a "t" at the end. An umlaut over a vowel means that the vowel should take on a different sound. You don't see it much any more these days, but if you pick up English books from, oh, the 1920s (L) or earlier, you'll see some vowels with things that look like umlauts over them. Those aren't umlauts, but, rather, diaereses. They represent that the vowel should be pronounced as the start of its own syllable since it might not be clear otherwise. ("Naive", "coordinate", and "zoology" come to mind as words that would have a diaeresis in an older book.) I can't imagine that the modifier we know and love is supposed to be a diaeresis. If someone told you it was, me and her should have a rumble. There are other languages with little modifying symbols (Hungarian has a couple, right?) that I don't know a lot about. Anyone care enough to take it from here? - --brian ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2000 16:33:34 GMT From: vika@attglobal.net (Vika Zafrin) Subject: Re: Umlaus Spake brian tivol : >There are other languages with little modifying symbols (Hungarian has >a couple, right?) that I don't know a lot about. Anyone care enough >to take it from here? In Dante's Italian, a dieresis over a vowel did/does pretty much the same thing that you described, Brian: it means that the vowel, which is almost always (or always?) preceeded by another vowel, has/is its own syllable. In Dante's poetry (and in Italian verse poetry in general, I'd say), that's extremely important, because each verse is an "endecasillabo" - 11-syllable verse, which has a very precise reading rhythm associated with it. Thus, two successive vowels in a word (my brain isn't coming up with an example right now) would normally be read as one syllable, when there's a dieresis you actually change the "correct" reading of the word. Think having to read "loan" as "loe-ahn". - -v - -------- Vika Zafrin -------- vika@attglobal.net -------- http://www.brown.edu/Research/Decameron "Open the door, HAL." - -- "Dave, I am afraid I can't do that." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2000 17:44:33 GMT From: mike96@bluecrow.com (Mike Yoshioka) Subject: Re: OT: bad teachers On Thu, 02 Mar 2000 00:18:02 -0500, MJ wrote: >to fix mistakes that she made in correcting the tests... my theory is that >there are *very* few good math teachers left on this earth (well, at least heh, my mom is a high school math teacher.
