The record companies believed that Belinda WAS the Go-Go's but the fact of the matter is that she was only one piece of an incredible collaboration. Yeah, she was the face, but her writing skills are weak, she doesn't play anything but toy xylophone, and frankly her voice only becomes incredible when combined with Jane Wiedlin's. Oddly enough, I think if you asked most Go-Go's fans who their favorite is the most popular would actually be Jane rather than Belinda. Then on the other hand Jane's solo stuff isn't all that great either. Basically you need all of them to make the magic work. I really like the Monkees and I think that may qualify ... But how's this, and it will fit both guilty pleasures AND embarrassing concert. Being a really good mother (from now on referred to as a RGM), I took my daughter FruPrincess Dana to see NSYNC last year ... and I liked the concert! And thought they were really cute and danced well and worked their cute little hottie asses off which they didn't have to do with 20,000 screaming girls (ok, maybe 15,000 screaming girls and 5,000 moms with earplugs) AND their harmonies were good and I actually liked a lot of their songs enough to let Dana add their tape to my car box. It includes 3 John Denver albums (Cookie - I'm a HUGE fan too), Barry Manilow, Kathi Lee Gifford (shoot me now!), Rosie O'Donnell, and the Rovers. All of which I love. I figure at Christmas, I'm allowed to give in to cheese. I also love what I call bubble-gum pop to pep me up - Spice Girls, Aqua, B*witched, SClub7. Hey, I been to a couple similar concerts - 1050 Chum, the oldies station in Toronto used to hold "Rockin' Back to the 60's" (I think that's what it was called) at the Skydome. Also I went to one of those at the Molson Ampitheatre, when it used to be the Forum (Toronto gripe - don't ask). I've seen Peter Noone a couple times, Davy Jones, Mickey Dolenz (separately), the Turtles, and whole bunches of other people. Got Peter Noone's autograph and a couple great photos. But it is kinda hard to explain to your peers when you are comparing first concert stories - they were all at things like New Kids or Debbie Gibson - and I saw these people that most people my age have never heard of. I'm sad to say, that I am actually sick of the Drinking Song.. of the last 12 shows I've been to each one was ended with that song. So it was a welcome surprise. You skipped "Get a Message to You" (or whatever it's called) after Half as Much, after Pisco was Independence Day. I thought the show was great, lots of energy on stage and in the audience, and lots of short improv-type snatches of songs like "Moxy Fruvous in the Game of Life" (I think, take off on an R.E.M. song), a welcome to Madison which included reminiscence of past two visits, one to a very small crowd and one in a shitty sports bar, which prompted the audience to cheer as if they had all been to both events, which Jian called their bluff on, saying they couldn't all have been there, there were only about 40 people at their first show a few years ago. Toward the end, Jian thanked everyone for coming to the show especially the "fruvirgins" and went into a little tongue in cheek about hoping their first show was a good one, maybe a bit confusing, possible hurt a bit at first, etc. ) For those of you who were there, I have a question: was it just me or did the encores seem awfully rushed, possibly due to a need to wrap up the show by 11:00 which they did on the dot? Maybe my attention wandered, but it seemed that they jumped into Green Eggs... in about the 1/3 point, no intro. and at about the tempo of J. Saucepan. And NO DRINKING SONG TO FINISH! Also, I find the placement of I Will Hold On in the encores rather disconcerting, especially as the last one. My guests, in contrast, thought it wound the show down nicely and was a mellow place to end. [Now, I usually don't post things like this, but when taxation of the Internet comes up in a real situation (Not the US Congress Urban Legend) I try to do what I can. -Mark-] From http://nowebpatents.org/: Amazon.com has received patents on so-called "one-click" buying systems and on affiliate programs. These patents amount to the ability to impose a private, Amazon.com E-Commerce Tax on all online commerce. It is impossible to run a viable e-business if Amazon.com enforces these patents. No one-click shopping means customer inconvenience. No affiliate programs means higher online prices due to more costly marketing. Amazon.com does not need patent protection to justify their investments in their site. It will cost their competitors just as much to implement these features as it cost Amazon.com. That is why copyright and trademark protections are sufficient. Marketplaces pay a very high cost to grant patents -- patents inhibit open markets and stifle competition. Patents should only be issued in cases where someone can copy an innovation for a drastically lower cost than the innovator's original investment. In this case, the patents cover the general mechanism behind one-click shopping and affiliate programs. However, any good programmer will tell you that the general mechanism is easy to design. It's the actual implementation, the programs themselves, that's difficult to produce. Amazon.com's implementation, which accounts for the bulk of their investment in these technologies, is already protected by copyright law, and doesn't need the addition of a patent.
