Jill, I don't think anyone thought you were attacking the committee, people were just responding to a couple of misconceptions that were stated in your original post. The bottom line on con timing was this: February in Toronto was when THE BAND was available to participate, and when there were going to be 3 shows in one place. (Also it has become a bit of a tradition at this point). Before the Lee's shows were announced, the committee did discuss the issue of where and when the con should be held. These were the criteria: We wanted the band to be there and available. We wanted there to be a couple of shows on the same weekend. And we wanted the con to be in Canada, both because of the fact that Früvous is a Canadian band, and because the economics of doing it in Canada works out much better for both Americans and Canadians. When Früvous announced the Lee's shows, they made it abundantly clear to us that that weekend is when THEY preferred the con to be held. Given all these factors, once the Lee's dates were confirmed, there was really not much more to talk about date-wise. Therefore, I'm taking the romantic side of this opinion poll, > and I'm rooting for the high-rolling, common-sense eschewing, new > couple! > > Cookie Well, recent events have highlighted the reality of that sordid spectacle, which I didn't watch. The woman has left the marriage, the multi-millionaire is being exposed as a bully and a cheapskate and the "romance" of the situation has died a quick, painful death. It just goes to show how brainwashed we all are by "romance" in the movies and on tv, where relationships develop super-quickly in order to fit a tight time-frame. Those of you who thought that a marriage from such a show would have any chance of working probably were thinking about any number of "love at first sight" relationships you've seen on movies and on tv, that's all. True love takes time to develop, and those who know each other as friends for several years before marrying are the least likely, by far, to divorce. Living together doesn't guarantee a good marriage, and neither does marrying before you are 30 or so, but having a good, long friendship with your future partner improves your chances of being happy by a long shot. When was the last time you saw that on tv or in a movie? The thing that disgusted me about the whole concept is how it reinforced all the negative, sexist stereotypes I have been fighting my whole life (I am a female in a field totally dominated by men - I fight this crap every day and am sick of it). The man held all the power. The women were competing with each other to "land a man". Each woman's appearance had a large role to play in her ability to snag the guy. The women were just interested in the man for his money (boldly emblazoned in the title of the sordid mess), as if possession of money was the only virtue a man has to bring to a relationship. And on and on. And millions watched it unquestioningly. Sad. I say shame on Fox, the multi-millionaire, the women who participated in the spectacle and all the fools who watched it. Next time something like this happens, just don't watch. TV programmers will throw anything up on the screen if they thing it will get ratings, so vote with your eyes and watch something uplifting. ------------------------------ Date: 23 Feb 2000 18:14:41 GMT From: dhihjuyc@email.adr Subject: Travel Agents Work at Home Do you want to stay at home and work as an agent? I think Fruvous shows are some of the most enjoyable moments of my life. I met Jian after the show, and he was every bit as friendly as I've heard. Being shy, I felt like a dork of course, but I'm getting used to that whenever I meet an artist whom I have so much respect for (I've stuttered incomprehensibly at Tori Amos quite a few times now ;). On our way out of the venue, Jian made a great modern-day Moses, parting the people as he walked through the room. We just kinda followed behind him in his wake, and navigated the room with ease. Anyhow... Thanks to whomever supplies the setlist, and thanks to Kat for giving me info on the show and Jill for being so kind as to pick up the tickets. I was >wondering what you guys would recommend for a first CD. Hi Rachel. Well, it seems that someone who already knows you has provided advice based on who you are... no knowing as much about you you may want to disregard what I have to say. I think the most frequently and highly recommended CD for a beginner is Bargainville. It is their first non-independent CD and *I* think is a very good sort of "meet moxy früvous" album with a mix of the silly and serious. Second would be Live Noise which gives a taste of the live show experience which is the most amazing thing I've encountered. Wood and b are sort of at opposites of the Früvous spectrum. b is their silly album and Wood is the serious album. While both are wonderful, (wood is tied with Thornhill for my favorite at the moment-- this changes frequently) normally I wouldn't suggest either for an opening because both give a rather unbalanced impression of what our lads are capable of. You Will Go To The Moon is, I think, sort of the experimental album. I went through a phase when I wasn't all that fond of it because much of it just seemed very "un-früvish" for what my impression of them was at the moment... but I trusted them enough to keep listening to it and I absolutely love it... as I do all of their albums, of course. Finally, there is Thornhill. This one sort of strikes me as the "normal" album. It is essentially where they really show their musical influences. I think that this album would be a good one to start someone off with if you want to sort of gradually mold them into liking the kind of stuff Moxy Früvous does... a mild introduction for "normal" people into our freakish freakish world. Well, this is all just my personal impression of each album. I'm sure many will disagree, but hell, diversity is what makes this crowd so amazingly wonderful! And a note about MP3's... Moxy Früvous is a grassroots band. They're not too widely known or advertised, they don't get much radio play etc. etc... If you have bunches of MP3's I would suggest that you, at least eventually, buy all of their albums. I mean I would suggest that anyway because they're so wonderful, but I think I speak for most of us here when I say that we all want to support the band as much as possible-- morally and monetarily... so it would be nice if they got some money for what they give us.
