Well there is actually way too much to say if you take the topic | as a whole, but here's a few thoughts I have: | | It is very unfortunate that the far right has suddenly gained so much | power in Austria. Why do you think that is? Were things going so badly | there that people have become desperate? I had no knowledge of anything | like that. First of all the freedom party did not really win the elecions which took place on Oct 3, the Social Democrats where just not able to form a government with any other party because the Christian Democrats did not want to form a government with the Social Democrats anymore and the Green Party did not have enough votes to breake the 50% barrier, or even the 66%. A lot of People were not too satisfied with the government we had for over 30 years now. So there was a chance for Haider's freedom party. Haider always was the kind of man who can tell you that everything was going the wrong way fro god knows how many years and if you don't listen carefully and don't think about what he is saying it sounds very true (but the next time he says exactly the opposite). | As far as the new government goes, I think everyone is over-reacting. | I'm NOT happy about a right wing government coming to power in Austria, | but I am not convinced that they will last very long, and I don't really | see them as a threat. Haider is right when he asks how can Austria be a | threat to Europe? They can't. Frankly I think the new government is | more of a threat to Austrians than to the rest of Europe. It can be and Haider mentioned it in an interview to a german tv-station: Every decition concerning the EU needs an agreement of all 15 countries. So Haider can decide not to agree to an eastern expansion, and the union cannot be expanded. And his argument against the expansion was that Austria is the most eastern country now and that it would mean a loss of employment. | While the formation of this new government does bare some international | scrutiny, I think pulling out ambassadors and practically kicking | Austria out of the EU is premature, inappropriate, and ill-advised. | | Premature because this new government is a legal, legitimate government | which has not done anything improper yet. While Haider has made some | rather poorly chosen and inappropriate remarks in the past, he HAS | apologized for them (i.e. recanted them) and in any case, what has that | to do with anything? He is not even in the government. I know he did appologize, but you don't know what he really said. I try to quote him here: If he ever offended anyone, he wants to appologiize for doing so. I think that is not the best way to appologize and the nezt day he called the european politicians a flock of chicken afraid of the fox who had not come yet. | Inappropriate because it is really not our place as non-Austrians to | tell the Austrians how to conduct their democracy. Would we Americans | sit still for other countries cutting off relations with us just because | of who won an election? Would other countries DARE to do so? I | seriously doubt it. Austria is suffering this fate partly because they | are small enough that the world can AFFORD to cut them off. there is not such a bad memory about anything happening in america as lots do about austria. | Ill-advised because I think the entire project could backfire. The | Austrians could well become very pissed off at the rest of the world for | this behavior and actually back the Freedom Party more fervently than | they otherwise would out of frustration and a sense of national pride. I think that is right that this reaction is possible and a lot of austrians say already: "It is not their business, maybe Haider is right in what he is saying. | Here is my theory: | Frankly I think that everyone is over reacting partly because the | Austrians are German speakers. I think that the idea of right-wing | German speakers is more than the still-scarred psyche of Europe can | handle. My evidence for this? If the same thing Happened in Spain, say | a Christian Democrat/Fascist coalition, would the world react this way? | No way. There would be some grumbling, and such a regime would be | CAREFULLY watched, but nobody would cut them off, because Europe is used | to living with a Fascist Spain. They don't have the same scary | associations as they do with German or Austrian Fascism. this may be true, but austrians have sometimes a very strange way to act, I don't know why | Well, Veronika, all you really can do just now is watch and wait. | Protest any government actions that you disagree with. Often we don't | like our government either. I don't think Austria could possibly become | another Nazi Germany, because people are too wary of that now. I can't | believe the people would tolerate it. If anything WERE to start to | happen that is truly improper, or a violation of human rights, then we | can all start to worry. Until then I'd say just try to relax. This | probably won't last. I am not so sure about it but I will hope it won't.
