They don't have the same scary > associations as they do with German or Austrian Fascism. The associations exist probably because Austria's past historical political events have had a tendency to start really, really BIG wars. One archduke is killed, and suddenly the entire western world was at war. Oh yeah, then there was that whole racial thing back in the '40s. Their political history most certainly has everything to do with the current public reaction, and let's face it...they ain't Switzerland. I also don't necessarily agree with your belief that this whole thing will basically blow over. Racism is a very serious international issue--and a very emotional one. If Austria doesn't want to play ball with the EU (or vice versa), it will utimately cause serious problems for the rest of the world. There is no such thing as an entirely independent country anymore. (Well, except for possibly Bhutan, but even it's beginning to encourage limited tourism.) And as the riots in Austria today reflect, the situation is also *internally* very volatile and could theoretically escalate very rapidly. Unfortunately, the transference of power isn't always peaceful. I'm just hoping everyone keeps cooler heads over the next few weeks, and things calm down a bit. Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue-green planet, whose ape descendant life forms are so amazingly primitive, that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea. This planet has, or rather had, a problem which was this: most of the people living on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but these were mostly concerned with the movement of small green pieces of paper which was odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper which were unhappy..."? :) Ken (yeah, I can do that and many other passages too... fun isn't it?) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Feb 2000 19:27:57 -0500 From: "^kat^" Subject: my fru-moment of the day (!) ok, so this is kind of silly... but seeing as how we've got nothing else to talk about (i'm not going near the question game), i'll throw it out there anyway. so, i was eating dinner at mamoun's, a great (& cheap!) falafel joint here in new haven. somehow we got on the topic of first kisses, and my roommate, liz, mentioned that a friend of hers had never been kissed at age 20--and that she had a wild crush on her boss. (you can see where *this* is going...) so, i murmured something about a song she has to hear. liz, having recently received the fruvous canon in the mail from cdnow (and had she *heard* of fruvous before i came into her life? not at all. *grin*), chuckled and agreed with me. one of our dining companions naively asked, "what song?" with that, we went into a musical rendition of "i love my boss" in its entirety--much to the delight of the other patrons of the restaurant, i'm sure. *grin* we alternated verses, either taking the melody or the "bossbossboss" part, and finishing with a grandiose collapse into hysterics. (thankfully for the restaurant staff, we were paying our bill & on our way out.) so, that was my lovely fru-moment of the day. hope all of you have had some fruvous to brighten your day, too... frucon in 2 weeks (yay)! ^kat^ "she was as pure as the cold-driven snow" http://fly.to/the.midway.after.dark **be the 3000th visitor and win a prize!** ------------------------------ Date: 06 Feb 2000 01:55:13 GMT From: spin0za1@aol.commmm (Spin0za1) Subject: Re: OT, headed towards T I'm sure..... >How do you figure? > >-Bender why don't you try to figure it out? :) "To believe that knowledge is ignorance is noble.
