He says that there's no point, it's just a lot of words that rhyme!<< I'll try not to make this long--the original took about 30 pages, but this is only an excerpt ;-) My senior year of college, I had my capstone class for my English degree. The culmination of this four-year program of study was a literary theory paper (kinda the philosphy of literature), and the question I had to answer was something along the lines of "What makes a piece of literature great?" /on English geek: About 5 of those pages were dedicated to Dr. Suess-- specifically GE&H [1]. The thing about literature is, that we tend to define its greatness in adult terms, but literature at the earliest reading level serves a much different purpose. It's not a matter of metaphors or even teaching a lesson, though I will agree many Suess books do. Instead, its about helping to instill in the reader a command of the wirtten word. Much of the greatbness of Dr. Suess lies in the construction of the language, the nuance between phrases. For a child to differeniate between "I would not could not in a house" and "I could not would not with a mouse," close attention must be paid to the letters, to knowing the "c" versus the "w." In it, they notice patterns of language, of how the construction of rhyming looks when written. And they know that the good Dr. will never be predictable-- they must pay attention to each and every word that comes across the page. And even though the book may only use 20 different words that all sound relatively similar, for a child to break the codes, to decipher the words, to detect the nuances--- it builds the foundation. It works to strengthen their power over the written word, so that they may later graduate to what we consider "adult" literature, and glean deeper meaning from the English language. So yeah, I';d say there's a point ;-) /off English geek ~jen (who could be much more convincing given another 15 paragraphs or so, and a few quotes rom some literary theorists, who I've since forgotten... ;-) [1] This was a good 2 months before I discovered fruvous, in case there were those out there questioning my motives ;-) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Nobody likes you when you're 23"-- Blink 182 "Do you know that you are very strong?"-- Grover "Measure your life in love."--Rent ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2000 05:40:12 GMT From: Sooozieee Subject: Re: more weird talents I can scream like a monkey.
