Elvis Stojko, that is. Imagine my utter shock. I'm strictly on autopilot, running a pretty standard batch of errands in that precious two hours between dinner and store closing hours, when I pop into a bed-n-bath store in Suburban Consumer Bliss, PA on a Wednesday night to pick up a fake-Rubbermaid storage tote that was on sale. The store's practically empty, and I don't have time (or money) to kill looking around at all the goodies, so I grab the tote and get in line pronto ... behind someone with dazzlingly wonderful longish curly dark hair. And an understated but obviously REAL team Canada jacket. No, no, what on earth would *he* be doing here? thinks a puzzled Lori. Yeah, okay, it does look a *lot* like him, but ... And then he moves, and it's SO obvious. Everything's graceful, pure energy. And as my eyes are popping out of my head he turns, sees me, and makes long direct eye contact that says "okay, you're right, you do recognize me." As I wonder whether I should say hi -- should I use his name or just allow him that anonymity from anyone else who might have been around -- he tells me to put the tote on the counter because "it's heavy" and I babble "no, it's not at all, but thanks" as he grabs the one end and maneuvers it onto the counter. He just laughs, finishes his transaction and says goodbye to the store manager as I stand there gaping like an utter moron. The checkout clerk rings me up, and as we're waiting for the credit authorization to come through I say in a low voice "that *was* who I think it was, right?" and she says "yeah. he's in here a lot." And we discuss the possibilities of that, we guess he has friends in the area or something, trying to make the unbelievable seem not such a stretch. (Yes, of course I'm still babbling. ;) ) But even though this type of thing has happened to me before, in other unexpected places, each time it IS unbelievable. And even though I'm fairly comfortable conversing with Frulads, or other folk performers who tend to interact on relaxed, "we're-just-people" level, I never know quite what to do when it's a hugely known presence. Maybe if I lived in New York or LA, somewhere where the whole town runs on the concept of celebrity, I'd be more blase about it. But maybe not. It also leads me to wonder how many "celebrities" I *don't* notice as I circulate through the daily grind, just doing regular-people stuff that they have to do too. After all, I hardly know of everyone who's made a name for him/herself in one way or another. And even those I know of -- even those I've seen at work at whatever it is they do -- I doubt I'd recognize most of them on the street. Lesson learned: famous people are really pod people. They've infiltrated the mundane world people like me inhabit -- they're among us, everywhere! Even in Suburban Consumer Bliss, PA, shopping for towels (or whatever it was he was buying -- I didn't have the presence of mind even to register this) on a weeknight. - -- Lori ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2000 19:51:04 GMT From: Josh Woodward Subject: Fruhead.Com Downtime Just a note that FHDC may be down for a day or two while I relocate it. I had gotten up very early to be in line to get a standby ticket. Yep, there at 6am with other Fruheads as crazy as me and have since become so of my greatest Fru Friends. I knew they were handing out standby tickets by 9:00am. Since I didn't have to be at work till 9:30 and my job's in the city anyway, I knew the morning wouldn't be a problem. The question was how to get free to be back in line by 4:00pm. Calling out sick has it's own problems at my job ie the boss tends to call to check up on you to see if your actually at home. So I decided that an emergency doctor's appointment for 4pm was the route to go. Since all the other women in the office use the same doctor, everyone knows that you always have to wait an hour or more once you get there and that getting an appointment is also hard. So I told my boss due to women's problems (best excuse, since their too embarssed to ask more) I had to go the doctor and if I didn't take the 4pm cancellation appointment I'd have to wait two weeks for another and my problems just was too serious to wait. Also, that I try to get back to work, but who knows how long I'd been waiting to see the doctor. Thanks goodness he told me just to go home after the appointment. So I got free of work, actually got in with a Standby ticket and got to see the Lads tape Splatter, Splatter for national TV. As I said it wasn't really the most creative lie, but it worked which is all that I cared about. Peace, Anita (who has to do something to pass the time at work today since FHDC is down...)
