Directions to Collingswood Venue ?? Okay . . . If you're coming from Philadelphia, take the Ben Franklin Bridge to New Jersey. As you're coming off of the bridge, stay to the right, and exit the Admiral Wilson Blvd (ignoring the porn stores and storefront churches) for Route 130 South/Route 30. Take 130 South to the Collingswood Circle, which is where it meets Route 30. Take the circle 3/4 of the way around, following the signs for Route 30 East. Take Route 30 East only about a block or two; you'll see the temple (a big, yellow mansion) on your left. I'm not completely clear on parking. You can also take 295 to exit 29 (or maybe 28) for Route 30 (it'll say Haddon Heights / Collingswood). If you're taking 295, follow Route 30 West for a while. Most of them are probably so excited to see the guys they can't help it. Imagine the first concerts you attended when you were thirteen or so. You probably weren't waiting for them to begin with a Heinie talking politics, eh? I just don't like screaming, that's a DRAG. I think every band whose members are accessible, nice young men probably have some fans like that and no, it's not cool to many people. I'm legal now, but I was a Fruvous fan when I was really young and I wasn't a screaming, drooling idiot. In fact, I hated that I was the age I was because people might think I was one of those fairweather teenybopper types. Also, I have seen "adults" pull off stupid crap. When Fruvous played Edmonton on Oct. 1 this year, a woman (who probably was loaded) yelled something lewd at Jian about her underwear then waltzed around through the Drinking Song in it entirety. People of any age can ruin a show for others. But I digress. I think some of us should give little teenage Fruvous fans a break. Not all are crazy harmone-driven spazzes. Or stop going to all ages shows if it's such a big deal. I hope that didn't sound bitchy. And promised myself to stick with common courtesy like I normally would and go from there.<< Having had my hand slapped (figuratively, of course) for mentioning Früvous etiquette in the past, I won't go there again. (Besides, I'll concede that the person was right.) But there are people who lurk on this ng, and people who haven't gone to a show who might be curious. If I may, I'd like to (carefully) mention characteristics which I've observed to be true of (many) Moxy Früvous fans. (whew, was that guarded enough?) I've only been attending shows for a bit over a year, and have only been on this ng since June, so I'm not trying to write the Früvous etiquette book, just relate what I've seen. It seems to me that Früvous fans demonstrate a high degree of politeness, courtesy, and respect, especially for the band but also for one another. There is a sense of being united by love (in some sense--take your pick) of a band with four extremely talented musicians and gratitude for the enjoyment, delight, silliness (pick your own reaction) that the band has brought into their lives. There are few things which unite people that have so few negative aspects (even sports and religion create rivalries which cause one to hate the opposing "teams.") Many Früvous fans place a high value on being nice. Just follow this ng for awhile. When people slam one another (which really doesn't happen that often), someone jumps in and says quit it. Every once in awhile someone will post something that is, shall we say, highly inappropriate for younger readers, and it will either be allowed to fade into cyber limbo or someone will write and say it's inappropriate. Even when the conversation gets heated, it's usually mostly respectful, and often a writer will confess to being bitchy or crabby. There's something endearing about that. It's that quality that many fans bring to the concerts and so are bothered by the people who don't. For folks who haven't yet been to a concert and are planning to go, here are some of the things that I've observed. There are at least two kinds of concerts: theatre concerts and bar concerts (I've never been to a folk festival. Someone else will have to reflect on that.) I first went to a theatre concert--at NKU last October. Then I went to a bar concert expecting it to be the same. Here's what I learned. THEY ARE DIFFERENT. Here are some things to expect. At a bar concert, if there's an opening act, Moxy Früvous will take the stage later than you expect. If you can find out when they're scheduled to take the stage, that will probably help you. But just cool your jets and plan to wait, and don't take it out on the other fans. Don't take it out on the band, either. It's a bar. People will be smoking, and they don't deserve to be yelled at for it. People will also be drinking. Unfortunately, some too much, and they then start to think that they are clever and talented and that the audience would really like to hear THEM instead of the band. Please don't become one of them. It's a bar. You will probably stand for a long time--a really long time. But you'll hardly notice it for the last two hours. The show is that good. You may have limited sight lines. People will be singing (these shows are highly participatory) and dancing (sometimes a person just has to dance). At a theatre you should be able to expect to have a fairly unobstructed view of the band. At the two I attended the crowd was just as into it, but a bit more subdued. Some people are going to want to dance, and if you've been to a few bar concerts you can understand why. But if you're one of them, please don't block the view of people sitting. Your right to a good time doesn't outweigh someone else's. The band does not take requests. After you've been to a few concerts and you realize this, it becomes pretty annoying when people call out requests. When it comes right down to it, I really like what Ln said, "Just stick with common courtesy and go from there." I'm sure I've offended someone, and I'm sorry. I've just been mulling all this over for a couple of days.
