As some of you may know (and more of you having no clue who I am) I have been 'on tour', following Fruvous through this leg of the tour through the east coast... Starting in Pittsburgh and ending in Rochester (or Montreal/Ottawa if I get brave) SO, I thought I would post a big thank you to Amanda for the crash space in DC and to Chris and Vika for the crash space in Boston, any time you find yourselves in Cleveland, you know who to call! The 'no taping shows' as I dubbed them (since I generally tape the shows I attend) have been very interesting... I had forgotten what it was like to stand down front, singing and clapping. Very odd... :) it's hard to post reviews without tapes, since my short term memory is absolutly horrible... but some highlights stick out... Pittsburgh: Got to the venue just as Fruvous took the stage, standing stage Murray (since I was with Donna, Karen and Sara) I think the highlight of this show, musically, would have been Misplaced, even thought Jian forgot a lyric, it was still really mice to hear it. Afterward, when we were discussion the 'no taping' issue, he said he was happy to know that I hadn't taped and that that litle mental error wouldn't be floating around. On this topic, I must say that I was really happy that no one to my knowledge stealth-taped the shows and respected the wishes of the band, it just goes to show that there is a great deal of respect on both sided of the fence, because the security wasn't beefed up and checking for equipment, and it would have been REALLY easy to stealth the shows. Very cool... bravo tapers!! (patting myself on the back for having self control, as well *grin* ) Harrisburgh: The only time I didn't get lost going to the venue on this trip... :) The venue was beautiful... musical highlights would have to be Spiderman, I Love My Boss (off mic) and Drinking Song (off mic, from the balcony)... Dave was in rare form (I was Stage Dave for this show after moving from the 4th row of the balcony to the second row of the floor) ...running back and forth between the amp for feedback and the stage to make a goofy face... hilarious! [Traveling Music] What a trip is has been.... (sorry, I can't help myself) Philidelphia: Wow.... Blow Wind Blow sounded great, they did a wonderful job, and being a Sabres Fan, I loved the Fliers slam by Jian (WOOHOOO!!) DC: This was a interesting show, kind of frustration as there were a lot of rather rude talkers... and I'm sure you've seen the "Drinking Song Post Sing Along" thread... on which all I have to say is I think alcohol was a factor in that part of the evening. Not good nor bad... just a factor. Alison was great as a closer, I'm a big fan of that version of the song, and it was a very cool end to the evening Somersville/Boston: By far (so far) the highlight of the trip... the opening songs were great... Gord's Gold/Homeward Bound/Spiderman/River Valley ...on a personal note, since i was driving to Buffalo the next morning, hearing Homeward Bound made me smile really big. ....I am really looking forward to tomorrow in Rochester.... On this trip, I also found there is an ugliness in the Fruvous Community, and that not everyone gets along, some people are really childish, petty, and down right rude.(Maybe I was naive to believe it, but I thought that maybe, of all places where there might be some peace in the world, the Fruvous Community would be it). I guess I considered Fruhead to be a bit more understanding, and a bit more open minded, but I guess no matter where you go... I digress... To everyone I got the chance to meet, it was a pleasure, this was a once and a lifetime chance and I'm so glad I took it when I came along. How long >: have you been going to shows, about how many shows have you seen, and >: what made the show so special. Hello all. :-) I've been to a lot of shows...around 95. My first show was 3/23/96. Many of them were extremely memorable (5/23/97 in Port Dover when the guys opened for themselves and I heard "If Only You Knew"'s debut, or the "show" at FruCon I)...these I'll remember for a long time. But the absolute winner in my mind for 'favorite Fru-show' has to be 10/30/98 at the Iron Horse. Ever since I had purchased YWGTTM on CD and cassette (so I could listen to it in the car on the way home from the record store), I absolutely fell in love with "Lee". I ran home and learned to play it as quickly as I could. I always dreamed of playing that song with the band. I never thought back in March of 97 when Moon came out that I would ever in a million years get the chance. In July of 98, Fruvous did an in-store at Media Play. The double Halloween shows at the Iron Horse had just been announced, and it seemed like the perfect venue and the perfect time (since with them playing 2 nights, they would be freer to do more non-standard stuff). I approached Dave after the in-store and asked him about it, and he said "Sure! I'll write it in my notebook and talk it over with the guys..." :-) Well, needless to say, I was excited. If I remember correctly, I went home that night and practiced a little. :-) Since I was planning a move from Rochester to Boston during the summer of 98, I didn't catch too many Frushows, so I didn't know until Fruvous' show at the Paradise on 10/29 whether or not the Lee thing would happen. I talked to Jian about it before the show and he assured me that it was still on, during their first of the two Iron Horse shows. I spent most of the daytime on 10/30 practicing my butt off. :-) If I remember correctly, Mary Krause sat and watched me during most of it. We headed for Northampton, and while waiting in line, Dave came by and motioned for me to come into the venue during sound check. We sat at the piano and ran though the song one time. Everything seemed fine; Dave gave me a couple pointers on some chords I had slightly wrong, but other than that, we were good. Many people know the 10/30 show as the "BJ and Rachel" show. Of course, Fruvous made me sweat during all of that and during all of their second set, waiting for the encore (although, how could I complain, to be an encore?!?!?! :-) My stomach was literally in knots by the time Fruvous called me onto the stage. The magical moment finally came...a completely dead silent crowd despite my mistake after playing the intro. After a quick restart, the song went without a hitch. I even got the final chord correct, despite many mistakes during my practicing...that made me feel especially good. When the applause came, it was so sudden and loud, that it scared the s**t out of me. I will NEVER forget that moment for as long as I live. There are only a handful of moments that you'll take with you to the next life, and this is definitely one of them. Thank you, Fruvous. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chris 'Father' O'Malley http://www.fruvous.com 'Tattoo Fru' webmaster@fruvous.com "I like being a pretzel with you..." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 21:52:41 -0500 From: chad schrock Subject: Re: A Few Favorite Moments from Harrisburg, 11-17-99 Michykith wrote: > > >This one reminded me a little of the show last November in > >Wilmington, Delaware, which was another favorite of mine. > > Amanda, that comment just made my day :) > > Go Wilmington and go Folk Survivors!
