I was up in the left (apparently the "lifeless") side balcony and when the show ended, I heard a group of people singing the drinking song. I also heard some great harmonies coming from the crowd! It was in no way meant disrespectfully to the band. They wanted to hear the drinking song because they fear change. Nothing wrong with that, and it was a great crowd bonding experience! But that's just my personal opinion, I may be wrong. But I know that there's a time and a place for it, and if it's a quiet, sit-down venue or an acoustic show or something, I'm not going to sing. If it's a loud venue like the 9:30, or a big outdoor concert or something, I'm more likely to sing, cos I don't think it'll interfere with anyone hearing the people onstage. And you're welcome to it, but I'm still going to disagree. If I paid to hear a band play, then that's who I want to hear, not the voices of the people around me, no matter how nice they might also be. "This is a concert," yes, but it's not a Korn concert. It's not nearly as difficult to be as loud as the band at a Fruvous show, and if I can hear you over the band, you're singing too loud and being extremely inconsiderate of the people around you. I sing along too, but not out loud. Yeah, they were the *opening* act (for Nick Heyward, go figure). Yeah, the old 9:30 club was a dank, smelly, pit with no sightlines to speak of. Yeah, the audience was really there *for* Nick Heyward, and that includes me (I was escorting a fellow grad student who was afraid of being a small Korean woman by herself in that neighborhood, and rightly so- the old 9:30 was in a worse part of town than the new one. Because it was my *first* time seeing, and hearing, Fruvous. I was stunned at how gifted they were as musicians and raconteurs. It was a full-brain workout the type of which I had not had since my first Grateful Dead show (and, in fact, that involved many greatly different parts of the brain, and much less adrenalin).
