This was one show where posted directions were sorely missed, as the Whitaker Center is so new it doesn't even have a fully operational webpage. I got decent directions privately from a Fruhead named Jeremy, and i thought I had passed them along to Lawrence, but I guess not. :( (I didn't want to propagate them to the world at large because I wasn't *sure* they'd work -- no offense Jeremy, but I don't know how Hburg works, so I was going on blind faith here.) Anyway, now that I know they work, I'll send them to Chris O to put up on FDC on the (I would say likely, in my utterly unprofessional opinion) chance that Fruvous will play the Whitaker again. Again, folks, I'd like to enter a plea that anytime Fruvous is playing a city or venue they haven't played before, if you're a local, or otherwise have some knowledge of the area, please remember to be kind and post info for the out-of-towners. Thanks! - -- Lori ****************** "*WHERE* do I *TURN*?!?!?!" ~~ me in DC, but thanks to Jeremy not in Hburg ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Nov 1999 23:56:01 GMT From: Melanie Subject: Re: On the Subject of Reviews Chad Maloney wrote: >>Whether they thought the show sucked rocks or immediately cause world peach. << Chad, I know this "world peach" thing was a typo, I do it myself ALL the time. And every time I see it, it makes me giggle. It seemed a giggle was warranted at the time. Thought I'd add my thoughts on reviews. As someone who doesn't get to go to dozens of Moxy Früvous shows (I've seen 8 in 13 months), reviews are a way of getting vicarious pleasure from others' Fruvian experiences (that may be a redundancy). Whether you think of it that way or not, your reviews are being read by many folks who don't see many shows. You can bring Früvous alive for us. I particularly like the reviews that share the banter and the improvs. Those that are organized by set list help to highlight the flow of the evening. Some travel information is fun, but when I read the first names of folks whom I probably don't know, it makes me feel like an outsider. That's not a criticism, but a reflection. As for reviews of shows I've seen, often they're pretty good. But again for infrequent frutrippers, the negative comments don't resonate. For example, at the Cincinnati show Amanda felt that Jian's intro to Disco Bargainville in which he said, "Sometimes a guy just wants to dance" was "tired, tired, tired." Well, I'd only seen it once, in Columbus, and I found it to be delightful. Chad thought that Hockey Night in Canada was tepid (can't remember the exact words), but it made my jaw drop. Having never heard it before, I just thought the guys' harmony was beautiful. Truly, I'm not trying to be critical. I really appreciate the folks who take the time to write reviews. I'm just trying to put you in mind of those of us for whom each show is extraordinarily special because we can't see the band that often. Hope no one took offense. Whatever you do, *don't* go to mapquest for this one. I just checked it out and I'm still shaking my head. The best thing is to go to their website (which is hard to find because the club is a number and that always confuses websearches, you know?). So go to www.930.com or, more specifically, www.930.com/info/directions.html . The best route if you're coming past Baltimore is to take 695 S to 295 S (Balto-Wash Pkwy). Drive a while (ha, I don't know, it's a coupla conversations worth of time, maybe half an hour???, and look for brown signs on the right saying NEW YORK AVE. (Chad, if you're coming on Rt. 50, this will work for you ... Rt. 50 to NY Ave.). Survive the crazy driving on NY Ave, get to the right lane, and look for Florida Ave. There's a Wendy's on the corner on the other side of Florida, so turn right with Wendy's on the left. A coupla miles down Fla, look for 7th St (for some reason, I'm thinking 8th is where I turn for lot parking, so 7th or 8th will get you in the vicinity). 7th/8th lead right into V St NW ... the club is at 815 V St on the right. I strongly recommend parking in the pay lot ($10) b/c there are lots of break-ins in the area. Another heads-up is that I was there 2 weeks ago and found a brand new club open on 8th, so that means less lot parking. The lots ask you to be back to your car 15 mins. after the show, so if you hang out afterwards, remember to move your car to the street. To everyone I haven't been in touch with lately, I really miss you guys. I've had health problems ... so these shows are a real pick-me-up, you know? :) Also, if anyone wants to meet up at my messy apartment before the show and rideshare or caravan, drop me a line. Much love ~ Valeri ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Nov 1999 14:16:38 -0800 From: ACW Subject: A Few Favorite Moments from Harrisburg, 11-17-99 Hi. My Name's Amanda; I'm a Fruhead. It's been nine days since my last show... (That's a joke, people.) (This is not a review, it's not even complete sentences; not for FDC.) The room was beautiful, the seats were comfortable, and the crowd was polite; the sound was fantastic and everybody was listening. In mentioning the room, Dave supposed he could sell one of the light fixtures and pay rent for a whole year; Mike conjectured that they could fill the whole room with tobacco and sell it for a lot of money. The off-mic Boss was a real treat, especially since Murray and Dave were standing closest to where I was sitting. You don't often get to hear the backup vocals, but they're doing some really cool stuff in there. Everybody was in fine voice last night, clear and true. I think my favorite improv was "Science" in which Mike talked about Better Living through Chemistry in a film-strip narrator voice, then announced that next year we'd be entering the Sixties! The Bold Decade! Close second was Dave's take on Beethoven's Fur Elise on acoustic guitar, with Mike on vocals. Murray summed that up by saying they'd fulfilled the classical quota in the contract and they'd now move on to Julius Caesar. If this is what we get in exchange for no taping, I'm all for no taping. Color me no longer cynical. Lots of accordion songs, in fact, Dave didn't pick up a guitar until they played Half. It was funny to hear both GMiA and Michigan Militia, as we'd seen what I thought was the Michigan Militia's truck parked not far from the venue. It was enormous, with bumper stickers including "I *Heart* Assault Rifles" and "Is your church NRA approved?" Yes folks, they do exist. One of the most honest moments I've seen onstage at a Fruvous show came while Mike was introducing Darlington. He said it was a song written about the Harrisburgs of the world, and then he paused for a beat and said "God bless you." I had tears in my eyes. Am I the only person on record at sniffled at a Darlington intro? It's still a favorite live number. Jian introduced Dave as 'aging talk show host Regis Philbin' and Dave spouted "who wants to be a millionaire?" in a passable Regis voice Dave's feedback stuff at the end of Potion was priceless, he was making these wonderful faces, playing with the guitar as much as playing it. He was clearly having a great time, and I think everybody in the room was having a great time watching him. Synergy. I'd never seen the Drinking Song off-mic, but I've participated in it enough times that I can sing the high harmonies. Lori turned around in amazement after the song was done, saying it had been a pleasure to have me singing in her ear. I thought that was a really nice thing to say, especially since I don't think I can sing. The show was very spontaneous, and that's the thing I first enjoyed about Fruvous. It's still what makes a show for me. This one reminded me a little of the show last November in Wilmington, Delaware, which was another favorite of mine. - --Amanda 'And Ally McBeal? [snip directions] just so y'all know, there's NO sign on the front of the club. You'll see a line of people usually, which shows you that it's a club, but it blends in with all the dilapidated buildings around it from the outside (it's really nice inside, though). There's a big radio tower on the top, which will help you find it from a couple blocks away.
