BTW, there's pictures from two of the shows at www.redshift.com/~taylorvw/moxy.html (make sure to click the link on that page to get to the pics) Palookaville, Santa Cruz 10/21/99 Fruvous Round-up Part 1 If there was ever a crazier week to have before seeing Fruvous three times in three nights, this was the week! I got sick a week before the show and took everything I could think of to beat it before they arrived in town. The good part is that I more or less did! :D Of course, that meant skipping a day from work to get rest and do part of a semester project that I would have otherwise done this weekend, but that's the choice I made. I trekked over the hill from San Jose to Santa Cruz right after work on Thursday and did the whole parking bit without incident. Had dinner at the Pontiac Grill (great place, eat there!) and as I was waiting in this little 50s diner, the jukebox started playing the original version of Love Potion #9...I totally flipped out! :D It was 7pm when my food arrived and I asked the lady please to put it in a box cause I needed to get over to the venue. So here I am walking down Pacific Ave eating my grilled cheese and fries. Well, right at the corner where I'd turn to get to Palookaville stands Cal and Mike. Eek! I casually walk up and say "Hey Mike, want a fry?" I think startled him; he politely declined. I stayed and chatted a tad, asking about the drive down and so forth. It was cool. So, I did the waiting in line thing and the wishing they'd open the damn window so I could get my ticket that was on will call thing as I hung out and caught up with other Fruheads that I hadn't seen since the Fleadh back in June. Eight o'clock and we all get in and start milling around, talkin with Tobey, getting the stamp action. I found a good place to stand and record and take pics. Met up with Carly Costanza and her mom, Nancy, from the Monterey area, her two friends Dakota (a little *too* into Jian) and Celeste. They made a short comic book about the band and gave it to Dave after the show....I hear they really liked it. ;D Caught up with Nicole and her friend from Davis. Generally milled around and talked with folks, checking my watch to see where Fruwench was since she had just flown in from Delaware that night! Luckily, they chose to put on a opener (one girl, one guitar, not great) which pushed back the Lads' start time and gave Wenchie enough time to arrive! :D She brought truffles too! Dark chocolate with Pineapple and White Chocolate with Macadamia Nuts! Well, the house was about three-quarters full when Fruvous took the stage which was a little disappointing, but it was a Thursday and not all the people who wanted to make it could. Either way, the show was real good...we were just thrilled to have them back out here! The energy started off low, but really picked up after a short time. All the standard Santa Cruz references came out...yeah, we're all a bunch of hippies. It was revealed that Thornhill was the town from whose loins they sprang and continue to spring. Their words, not mine! Plenty of sarcastic jabs at the employment level and homeless population of Santa Cruz. Which really isn't that bad, honestly...coming from San Jose or seeing what it's like in SF! Oh, and naturally there were references to how warm it suddenly was now that it was fall. For those who missed it, go back and read the reviews from June where it felt more like fall at the beginning of summer! I'm continually impressed with how they're able to remember where they made which reference. And keeping in that key, they played It's Too Cold this time out! What was really a thrill was to hear River Valley and Present Tense Tureen live. Just one of many songs this weekend that hadn't been done in Northern California before! Of course, the slight irritant of the night was a bunch of newbies who kept yelling for King of Spain...not knowing that they always do it. Strange reference of the night goes to the Blanc Mange (it's a Monty Python reference that I think I mispelled)...this giant Blanc Mange that grows huge and (as Mike says) attempts to eat the earth! To which everyone runs around yelling and screaming after some encouraging. Total highlight of the night had to be Green Eggs and Ham with a five minute (I timed it) "Hey not the Beatles" interlude where the beating on Dave prompted a chant of "We love Dave" and of course he wasn't supposed to be Dave, but Mr Cheeze, so Mike jumps out into the audience and does this improv moshpit/beat on people thing. Pretty damn cool! After the show everyone came out...always a plus and hung out for a little while. As I was wearing my Tacky Hawaiian Shirt (which I may put into rotation with more mellow ones) Dave gave it total approval and said "Were Graham Parsons alive, I'm sure he'd wear one just like it." Talked with Murray a little and said hi to Jian and Mike. But eventually it was time to get out and get back over the hill. Fruwench caught a ride with me and I dropped her off at her hotel room before picking her up again the next day for the Stanford show. Big thanks and love to Wenchie, Nicole & Co., as well as Carly and her crew! - -Taylor (of the Various Hawaiian Shirts) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Oct 1999 06:39:09 -0700 From: Taylor Nelson Subject: Review Great American Music Hall 10/23 Same preface...same Hawaiian Shirts Great American Music Hall 10/23/99 Fruvous Round-up Part 3 Well, I'd give a review of West Coast Live, but I was stuck at work all day today. The most Fru I got was sitting there when it was slow and singing to myself "ten soldiers and Nixon's coming!" But before long work was over and I was trekking up to San Francisco from San Jose! Got into town a little after six pm and found a garage to park in. This part of the story isn't the best. I basically paid as much for all three shows as I did to park last night...that's more or less wrong! But anyway, it was three blocks from the venue, so I coped. Now, the Great American Music Hall is an incredibly famous SF venue, but the neighbourhood it's in sucks beyond compare! Right next door is the famous O'Farrell porn theatre! And I am surprise the band made no reference to it during the show. So I am now the first fruhead at the show and desperately needing to use the bathroom. Luckily a staff member came out and, after asking, pointed me toward a bar (that was clean, had nice decor and lots of friendly posters on the door) at the other end of the block that they all go to after the show. :) Yaaay, bladder saved. When I returned there were other fruheads there....woohoo, not alone to be hassled by the homeless! Now, let me aside here and point out that I have become known as Taylor of the Tacky Hawaiian Shirt...this way people can find me really easily. However, the weather is finally cooling out here and so I chose to skip the Hawaiian Shirt and go with a nice sweater instead. I had forgotten that I was to meet more out of town people who were only going to be at this show! So flashback to where I was, meeting these other fans, which turn out to be Kristy from Portland and her two local friends/virgins. So now I'm getting hardcore flak for not wearing the shirt...or even the AMMF button. Just couldn't win. But now we had a crowd and now we were the front of the line. Which, by show time, stretched the rest of the way down the block!! The GAMH is a gorgeous venue inside even though the outside leaves much to be desired. Ornate trim and Victorian artwork lines everything...and yes, the band proceeded to have "bad pun" night and comment on the decor of the place. Okay, here's something cool...normally the opener (at least out here) isn't that much to talk about. Cindy Bullins really was pretty good...we saw her last night as well at Stanford, but tonight, she said, there was a special guest she wanted to bring out on stage to play with her. The general feeling was, "Okay, sure...another person we've never heard of." To which she then says, "Ladies and Gentlemen, my good friend Bonnie Raitt!" Woah, 'scuse me, Bonnie Raitt!? THE Bonnie Raitt?! We were floored to say the least. It was like some strange walk into a VH-1 Storytellers episode...or one of those Diet Coke commercials where they pasted Humphrey Bogart into the scene. It so did not feel real! Fruvous must have taken the stage sometime after 10pm...kinda late, but no one really cared...the place (cap. 600) was packed!! I didn't get a set list, I always let others get them and post them here. But they improved into a song about Oakland (across the bay from SF), avoided any Fight Club references this time, did another fabulous Minnie the Moocher (to which Kristy scored me the notes), played The Lazy Boy which you just don't hear too often, and gave us an excellent version of Disco Bargainville toward the end. This was a first for Northern California and I am kicking myself now for not having my tape recorder with me. Oh! I was quite impressed when Mike yelled out at one point "Someone's taking a beat on Stu!" which was the big reference of the night when they first played SF again back in '98. And you could tell all the fans who were at the show because you could only hear us cheering! :D The show was also packed with Fruvirgins! I mean, probably 40-50% of them, which I'm sure is something you never see on the east coast anymore. Other cool moment was the computer geek references they made during the night. The Star Trek and computer geek reference, they figured, covered 461 of the 600 people there. Then, during King of Spain, Jian breaks out with "King, do you come in all five iMac flavours? Are you 32 flavours and then some?" Uproarious laughter! We need iMacs to come in all four Fru-flavours, don't we? :D The show ended well after midnight and exhaustion was already starting to set in, but I stuck around hoping to catch Mike who didn't have a chance to sign my poster from Stanford the previous night. But Dave said he took off early and so I figured I could send the poster ahead to the east coast and get a friend to have it signed. Frankly, I can't blame Mike, it was a really big crowd! So longer story just a tad shorter, I got home around 2am...having nearly fallen asleep on the way home. Not cool. But I got home and just crashed hardcore! Big big thanks to Doug, Caitlin, Nicole, Elena, Rachael, Colleen, Miles, Sandra, Rachael's two friends whose names I can't seem to remember (sorry), Sarah Bum and mom, the girls from Ohio and Connecticut, Chris, all the other Fruheads West and East who I may not remember after so little sleep, and especially big hugs of thanks to Kristy Thompson and Fruwench for making the weekend so damn cool!! Oh, and a note to the lads...it was most of us who nicely wrote Love From Fruheads West and Delaware on the rear side window of the van. - -Taylor (of you know what ) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Oct 1999 06:37:54 -0700 From: Taylor Nelson Subject: Review Stanford 10/22 Same preface as 10/21 with webaddies and so forth... Tressider Union Cafeteria, Stanford 10/22/99 Fruvous Round-up Part 2 Well, never let it be said that one cannot operate after only five hours sleep. I was up nice and early to skip class and get some errands done before the show. At 11am, I picked up Fruwench from her hotel room and off we went toward Stanford! We made one stop along the way for...umm, sundries and found a child's arcade ride that consisted of Spiderman driving a racecar (Spidey goes Speed Racing!). We rushed back to the car and got the cameras. Heehee, these pictures shall never see the light of day. We killed a few hours hanging out at the Stanford Shopping Center. Note on Palo Alto (home of Stanford): it is sickly yuppie-ville! Porsches, Mercedes, BMWs...everywhere!! Anyone who's made money in the computer business seems to live in this area and home prices easily jump over the million-dollar mark! So imagine two crazy looking fruheads wandering around after arriving in the Amazing Racing Beetle [tm]. Well, sick and freaky 'heads that we are, we arrived at the Union around 2.30pm! Now, I did this mainly because a lot of people needed directions to the venue (which I got out thanks to FHDC) and I figured a good meeting place would help us find each other. So the previous week I made up my "Fruheads West" sign! And it worked...people were able to find each other because of it. (and after the show many people told me that they were able to make it here especially because of the directions I provided *gush*) Well, as we're sitting down to hang out and do some homework, the band happens to show up like 15 minutes after we got there! Eek! :D Well, Tobey comes walking by, sees us, and asks if we know where it's happening. Since I had gone to Stanford twice just to get info on the show, I got up and took Tobey inside to meet the manager and get things arranged. That was more than just a little cool! But the cafeteria seemed a little small and I figured this would be an interest, if not intimate, show. I'm going to cut out a lot of the story I could put in here...cause we spent six hours sharing Frustories and so forth. At one point, Fruwench broke her anklet and needed some needlenose pliers to fix 'em. I replied, "Well, I've got some in the car, it's not too far." without even thinking about it. We paused, looked at each other, realising the reference...I fought it, fought it, but nooooo! "Just pick up the boxes, all the boxes you can use!" I quickly blurted out. :D And this was after saying "The Egyptian grrrrrrl" everytime one of us said "My god!" LOL That was the highlight of the wait...aside from the swill-a-licious French Roast (which for some reason Dave really liked). Well, as everyone was doing sound check, a small group of us had arrived to get seats...yes, there were seats! For a while, it looked like there'd be about 60 of us at most. Well, by showtime, there had to be closer to 200 and more wandering in! Cindy Bullins opened up and she was pretty cool...no Chapman stick (Slim's '98 attendees will get that reference)...and it's worth picking her new CD up. :) However, a lot of us took the time to go outside and catch up on things and missed the note that Cindy would be playing with a very special guest the next night in SF. Fruvous came on around 9pm and I scored a decent place to record and get pics. The lighting sucked and the speakers weren't much, but that kinda helped the recording. The banter was excellent...some really cool stuff! They even pulled one of the posters off the wall and made mention of the seven German acapella singers from the turn of the century on it. "It looks like a regular late night frat gathering." (Later, I scored a poster and had everyone [but Mike :/ ] sign who they think they'd be) There's a small grocery store next to the room (even the walls were windows, so we could all see in) and they spent a lot of time commenting on the sundries and various other things this place had. Sundries even made references into I Love My Boss. When King of Spain came around, Dave disappeared out the side door and into the store while Jian did the intro. He comes back in with a bucket hat on and carrying what looked like a bag of chips...so again we are treated to the wonders of sundries and the joys of the Gap! Lots of sarcastic reference to how hard working and employed the students of Stanford are. Hey, a school that costs that much...oh yeah, you're gonna work. ;D And of course they completely dissed the locale. "Hey," Jian said, "looking at all the beautiful buildings on campus, they decide to put the Canadians in the shittiest building here." We were also treated to interludes from Doctor Zhivago! Anyway, the Leafs became the Sharks in KoS and there were a few "Do you know the way to San Jose" references later on (woohoo!). Possibly the biggest treat of the show was "Walk on the Dancing Queen" (at least that's what I call it) mainly because I had never heard it before and had only heard fabulous stories about it! It was possibly my highlight of the weekend between the banter-filled Green Eggs & Ham from Palookaville and the Disco Bargainville from SF. A very cool cover came when Dave had to bolt from the stage and around the corner to the bathroom while the rest did Elvis Costello's "Oliver's Army." We were also treated to Ash Hash which I don't think I'd heard live before....not to mention a random improv of Surfin USA! Seriously, there was so much neat stuff during this show that I don't think I can cover it all. That was a big surprise for a small, free show. :D Talking with Murray afterward, he had started to catch a small bug and so I offered a few Echinacea and menthol mint herbal throat drops I had been keeping handy. He said the next night that they really helped. Also, I seem to recall getting into a long discussion with Dave and other local friends about the best computer system to get and the benefits of the Mac G4 over the G3...lol...only in Silicon Valley! Stanford is also where I parted ways with Fruwench who met up with her room and board for the rest of the weekend. Thanks again for keeping this poor left coaster company! Also big thanks to Elena, Rachael, the band geeks from Los Gatos High, Nicole, Nicole's friend whose name I can't recall, Caitlin and Doug (who were here after putting in many 16hr days at work), Sarah Bum and mom, and all the new fruheads that were made at this show!! - -Taylor (of the Various Hawaiian Shirts) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Oct 1999 19:47:59 GMT From: homeloansource@connectfree.co.uk Subject: Find out how much you can borrow Home loans are available for EVERY credit and equity situation! We left at 2:30and began driving north through Orange County. Since there were three of us we got to use the diamond lane allthe way up which was a real boon to traffic We made it up to Culver City, where my aunt lives by just after five. My aunt had dinner prepared and waiting which was very nice of her. She was real excited to see me come up to visit for the first time since I got home we finished dinner about 45 minutes later and left for the 45 minute drive down Sunset Boulevard to the Troubadour the show was scheduled to start at eight and when we pulled in front of the club, which by the way is spelled Troubadour there were stanchions in front of the door and they said that they were running late and they wouldn’t even be done with the sound check for another 45 minutes. It was already 7:15 so we drove down Sunset for a while trying to look at the sights but it was kind of hard after dark. We pulled up about 45 minutes later and met Dave my brother’s friend from High school who works in LA we unloaded my wheelchair and gave the keys to the valet parking attendant and wheeled in to the club. The ticket takers reminded me of the wonderful new law that prohibits smoking in any club or bar in California we waited around for about 20 minutes when I remembered to go and see Toby who was real glad to see me and we talked for about 10 minutes when he stamped my card it turned out that I had filled my frumiles card up, we talked a little about the logo for frucon 2 that brent and Marianne had licensed to the band. By the time I wheeled out of the merchandise table the opening act was just starting. Her name was Cindy Bullens or something like that she made a couple of references to having been playing together for some twenty years or so. She was not terribly interesting to listen to but I was understandibly excited to see the band. Cindy finished her set in about six songs. The club was very small and had a rather large stage with a sort of catwalk balcony up over the audience From my perspective not being able to see over anyone’s heads I would say that they were bordering on a capacity crowd. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to see around the people standing in my way then the band came out and as soon as they started the intro for half As Much Leslie and Dave grabbed the rear of my wheelchair and lifted it up to swing me around so I could sit right in front of stage Dave. I had a really poor view of Murray but the seating turned out pretty good they opened with Half As Much and moved straight on into Liaka and then paused so Jian could introduce themselves to the audience and while wiping his brow he really seemed to like the fresh smell of the towels and tried to get everyone else to smell their towels they proceeded to do a little snippet of Towels from Home and then came Horseshoes then they played You Can’t Be Too Careful during which I sent Leslie to the bar to by a shot of Tequila and I placed it onstage at Dave’s feet and got a nod of thanks from Dave who proceeded to ignore it for the rest of the show until after the encore. Then came Sad Girl which Jian introduced as being about girls in our popular culture obsessed society then they went on to perform Lazy Boy which came off sounding clean and tight and is one of my two favorite MF songs. (The other is Poor Mary Lane)Mike started to intro the next song by talking about a “Saturn Vee” rocket and was quickly corrected but not before Dave could start making fun of Mike by calling it a”Saturn Vee five” they then had trouble getting the tone from Dave’s Pitch pike(is it pipe or Pike?)they finally got started on You Will go to the Moon. Next was Independence Day. They segued right into the intro to Boo Time All this time my brother's friendDave who is a professional musician keeps commenting on how good Dave is and how well he playing guitar. His band is BigFins you can check out their site at http://www.bigfins.com then they move on to the King of Spain intro and Mike seems to spend an inordinate amount of time slappin’ the bongos for the KOS opening and Dave is not wearing his jester hat but instead a black fishing cap like they have for sale at the merch table and then they performed a song Idon’t remember. It might have been Your New Boyfriend I know they performed that at sometime during the evening It’s listed on the setlist as NG Then they performed Splatter Spltter and Iwill Hold On with brilliant harmonies. It was such a joy to hear them perform it because that is the song that they dedicated to me when I was in hospital. Then comes My Poor Generation and from that Jian started banging out the opening rhythm forMy Baby Loves A Bunch Of Authors complete with the requisite “We’re Moxy Fruvous from Toronto and My Baby Loves A Bunch Of Authors!” They moved into a very good version of Get in the Car where Leslie’s friend Dave again Marveled at what an amazing musician Dave isthen a song listed as Boy on the setlist Probably Your New Boyfriend then they finished up with Psycho killer where they performed an extended intro with about three false starts on the song. Jian finally got the song started and they were all jumping around the stage during the song. .They ran offstage at the end to thunderous applause They came out for an encore to perform Michigan Militia then they left the stage again then came out to perform “the final song from their live album” The Drinking Song and the audience was so into it. It’s like the entire audience sang on key when Jian had everyone sing the chorus. When they finished two startling things occurred. Jian leapt from behind his mic and came out to right where I was sitting just off of Dave’s spot on stage and he knelt down to shake my hand and thank me for coming to the show he seemed genuinely excited to see me and told me to wait a few minutes for the guys to come out. The other thing was that Dave put down his accordion and ran to the shot that I had placed there at the beginning of the show and slammed it down and reached out for my hand and shook it thanking me for the drink. The place cleared out relatively quickly and it was easy to maneuver my chair around the club after a few minutes Jian made an appearance in the audience and I got Leslie to snag Dave’s setlist. And I just realized whatNG was on the setlist. It was where they introduced Nat Gertler to make hisproposal toLara whose post you have probably already read All-in-all it was a tremendous performance maybe because I have never been in a position to watch Dave perform so closely before but I thouhght that Dave put in an amazing performance at this show eventually Mike and Murray and Dave came out and I got them to sign my Thornhill liner notes Jian spent a good deal of time embarrassing me by saying how good I look and how incredible it was that I made it to the show and I got to warn Jian that in case I fall into another coma what my two favorite songs were and when I thanked each one of them for performing Lazy Boy they each got to say how pleased they were with how well the performance came out Mike even told me how they did Poor Mary Lane each night when they were recording Live Noise and they just never got a version of it that they were pleased with though Mike admitted that he liked performing Poor Mary Lane. Mike even drew a little budgie dog on my liner notes and Dave wrote thanks for the drink on my liner notes. It was great getting o spend so much time with the band. And I think that at one time or another they each asked me to come up to Toronto in February for Frucon 3. I know it's not really *that* coherent but hey - i thot it was better than nothing *AHEM* all you lazy CO kiddies that can get a clear sentence or two out should step on it cuz i'm impatient! I know that sometimes the reviews of shows get posted up at FDC if they are posted to the NG but i'm gonna ask whoever does that normally NOT to post this over there in the review section as it is not my review and it really should be his choice not mine... "ok I don't have a set list, they opened with this song called poor Napoleon or peut-etre pour Napoleon... anyways it was pretty groovy, I think they played river valley after that and then the rest of the songs I'm gonna list are not in any orded except the order I remember them in ok? : this really really really cool ver of video barg.... hell yes.... sweet as hell I think that might have been the first of the 3 song encore... no I think maybe it was th last set song.... we'll get to the encore later... mich militia, umm a whole bunch of thornhill /(DUH) splatter, indep day, hold on. umm what else, the third song of the night was whatever the first song on thornhill is, they played your new boyfriend, a couple other things from "moon" umm and that's all I can realy remember, the highlight is Jian saying "So why listen to a folk band/rock band, who sounds like a cross between ______ , they might be giants, and want to be the next elvis costello... " it was great you would've jumped.. anyways the encore: they came out and did king of spain, then green eggs, then I think something else kinda slowish and then the drinking song...... yay for that, " the rest is just post-show chatting with the band kind of stuff. On the whole - of the 5 buds of mine that went to teh show last night that i was actually able to get a hold of it seemed like the general consensus was that the show was too slow. i would be pleased with a slow show i think but hey, take that for what it's worth. If anyone has anything worthwhile to say about tonights show i'll be sure to pass that along :D "take it easy, JOrdaN" http://www2.netcom.com/~arnot/joda/bootlegs.html http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palladium/3404/frustuff.html ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it.
