I agree, it's rather awkward, but putting any verb there wouldn't scan I guess. >How can a beach go away? aaaaaaa .... I guess it can be fouled beyond recognition, turned into a toxic waste dump instead of a proper beach; maybe various explosions and icky warlike acts of destruction ruined and transformed the coastline. Envision an ecologist giving a lecture and pointing: "The beach used to be there, but now it's just a murky mess o' muck. That's where the sea ... >*what*??? Where's the verb? What's the sea doing, there, wherever it is. I always just filled it in as "that's where the beach was, that's where the sea was" - poetic liberty and all that. >How can a beach go away? aaaaaaa .... Having visited Normandy Beach in France, I can answer that - what was once probably a beautiful long beach is still covered in debris left from the war. It's a permanent reminder of the horror that took place there. If you are ever over in Europe, I urge to go visit some of the war cemetaries there - - they are amazingly powerful. It really brought the war home to me. And if Europe isn't in the cards right now, just think of Saving Private Ryan (*not* a spoiler) - the first 20 minutes are a perfect example of what I'm talking about - the beach (and the sea) became littered with bodies and guns and fighting. The beach is thought to be a peaceful, calming place by most people - but the fighting destroyed that. It's not that the beach is gone persay, but the beach has been scarred and can no longer return to it's original state. That's my interpretation at least.
