Hello evryone!, Just a belated message from me to thank you all for making me feel so welcome during my trip to Canada. The 2 Fruvous gigs that I saw were the highlights of my holiday and it's all down to the people that I met there. I'm now back in the UK (I've been back about 3 weeks), and I'm trying to convert all of my friends here into Fru fans! I would like to hear from ANYONE I met on holiday (forgive me if I don't remember all individual names...there we're so many of you and I'm naturally very quiet and shy), you were all fantastic to me. And as a special requst I would like to get on touch with anyone that might be able to send me a video of the IWHO video and maybe the Conan appearence when it happens...I will pay all costs! Seriously, I think this begs the question as to whether there's love without a dark side. But I had to write and share my fruvous moment: I was at Alfie's on Saturday night (a campus bar and the *only* place to be on Homecoming weekend - speaking of which, where were you, Veronica?) Anyways, I was beginning to tire (we had arrived at 7:00 in order to avoid the lineups - good thing, since my friends who came half an hour later had to wait in line for over an hour to get in!) - it was crowded and the music had been crappy (imho, of course), when all of a sudden my friend Amy looks at me and says do you hear that? (of course not, I am both deaf from the music and mute from talking over the music) - I look puzzled and attempt to listen. "It's Fruvous," she exclaims. Ohmygosh! They played "king of spain" at Alfie's!!!! Unfortunately, during my sprint to the dancefloor (actually the attempt to squeeze through a million bodies), I ran into a oldtime friend that I hadn't seen in a long time, and she talked to me through the entire song. Sigh. Later in the evening, that guy Fraser came up to me and asked if I had requested the song. I said no (terminal shyness prevents me from going up to dj booths even when I know the dj is an incredibly nice guy). So we both basked in the fact that it was so cool to hear them in a bar. Okay that was a long story for one sentence - they played Fruvous at one of our bars (see Kingston loves you...come to Kingston). Friday night I went to check out a band called The Influence. The drummer is Mark (from this newsgroup) and I met him at the Fruvous Concert in Cleveland. Since I decided to go check them out, I thought I would post a review so that everyone on the fruvous network can maybe check them out too! Well now for the tradition setlist: Set 1: Quite Pleasant Temporary When I Die Dan's Song Love Potion #9 Seasons Sister My Friend Psycho Killer Waves Same World (potty break) Set 2: Aging The Gift Changing Persp. Sympathy Inhibitor Child How It Goes Slow Turn Her Off Tree Life Redemption Love Potion #9 was really cool and I was in aww by Psycho Killer! Mark did the little pushing the mic thing that Jian always does except there was no mic and I was the only one that actually got what he was doing. It was a so funny!! Musically this band is really good... I always love listening to the bass (just like the sound I guess) and that was really cool. The way the instruments blended together was great! This is a fairly new band (if i remember correctly) as in they haven't been together for a long time. In my opinion no one is perfect and even Fruvous has things to work on. The only thing I really think this band needs to work on is vocals. The only guy that I heard sing was rather high and I think if maybe some of the other guys sang too with some low vocals it would sound a lot better. Then again this is just my personal opinion. I highly recommend if anyone has a chance to check out this band. I put their webpage address at the bottom of this review for everyone to go look at. They do have some links to some mp3 files of their recordings and its worth listening to. Thanks for anyone that actually read this whole review and I think the band would be pleased to have you check them out! (Now only if they could open for Fruvous!!) From Philadelphia area, this means get to Interstate 476 and take it north to where it joins I-81 at the end of the toll portion of I-476 (aka Northeast Extension of PA Turnpike). From NYC area, take highway 17 west to I-81 North. Take I-81 to the Canadian border at Hill Island/Lansdowne. Do the customs thing. Be polite. Don't have a gun rack in your car. :) After customs, follow signs to 401 East. Take 401 East to 16/416. Go North toward Ottawa, not South toward Prescott/Bridge to USA. (duh) Follow 16/416 North; when 416 cuts off follow 416N to 417(commonly called the Queensway). You're in the greater Ottawa area! Take 417 East to the downtown area. Now it gets interesting, because Queensway ramps are interesting. Sorry about that, but I hope these directions are clear enough. (Hugo? MC? hKath? Care to offer any better interpretations?) As you head into downtown you should notice signs for some of the following (I'm listing them in west-to-east order): Bronson Street; Bay Street; Lyon Street (though I think this goes one way the wrong way); Kent Street; Bank Street. Any of these will do just fine. See the signs and rest assured you're not far. :) If you happen to get off at Bronson, that's very cool. If not, don't panic; directions forthcoming. :) First, if you do manage to get off onto Bronson Street: go North (left) on Bronson to Gilmour; make right on Gilmour (there *is* no left; Gilmour ends at Bronson) and follow to Bank. The club is in the vicinity of Bank and Gilmour (according to Mapquest it's on the corner, but given MQ's rep I wouldn't take that for granted. :) If you see signs for Bay, Lyon, Kent or Bank: get off 417 at that exit! The ramp will put you on a feeder street called Chamberlain; that's fine. Take Chamberlain east (ie, straight off the ramp) and check the street signs of cross streets. When you see one of the above, if you CAN make a left do so! Bank Street is preferable, but any will do. Follow any of these to Gilmour. If you're already on Bank Street, you should be in front of Zaph 2's. If you're on one of the others, make the right onto Gilmour and follow to Bank. If for any reason you find yourself confronted with a street that doesn't go the way I say it should -- don't sweat it. Continue the way you're going to the next intersection; that street will go the right way, and will parallel the street I told you to be on. Ottawa's nice like that. :) Just continue following the directions, knowing you're one block too far in whichever direction I overshot, so you can backtrack. For those staying at the Albert at Bay Hotel Suites: If you find Bay Street off the Queensway, or en route to Zaph's 2, the hotel is 9 blocks north from the corner of Bay and Gilmour. (one block south of the corner of Queen and Bay -- hey Organ Grinder! :) ) If you're in our room, I don't guarantee we'll be checking in before the Friday pm show, but you could always find out if we've arrived. If you want to find the hotel from Zaph 2's, go North on Bank 9 blocks to Albert, make a left and continue 3 blocks to Bay. (In all my references, "blocks" are major streets, usually with lights, not little rinky-dink side streets/courts/alleys that might or might not be there, but don't show up either in my memory or on the Ottawa street map in front of me.) I'm including a Mapquest hyperlink to a downtown Ottawa map, but whether the link will still be active by the time you get this message is a matter of pure speculation: MapQuest Ottawa Results I got the map by entering the address of the club: 363 Bank Street, Ottawa ON, and asking for a map. Not directions. MQ in its wisdom can't figure out US---> Canada or Canada----> US directions, although it can give Canadian city maps. Go figure. That's all I can think of for now ... I hope it makes sense! - -- Lori *********************** "Where do I TURN?!??!?!?" ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V3 #857 ********************************************
