My theory about songs Murray actually sings is that he wrote them all. I mean, he sings lead on so few songs, that there'd be little reason for him to sing someone else's song, or for someone else to sing one of his. Now, I like having the tapers tape the concerts because then I can get copies of the concerts I want. However at the Detroit show the mic stands were obstructing the view of many people, several that were fruvirigins. They didn't know that the mic stands would be there when they sat down so as to no fault of their own they had a bad view which would have been a great view if not for the tapers. Now I know that the tapers want "good" spots (since i'm not a taper i don't know where these places are) but can't the tapers find somewhere to tape that isn't obstructing the view. I've noticed at many concerts (i.e. The Ark) the tapers put their mic stands with the posts and thats great! but what about the venues that don't have posts... Can the tapers move to one side or the other, or maybe to the back of the venue? or maybe not put the mic stands at full height. I know there's "The Drinking Song," and I once read that "River > Valley" was written by Mike, but that's it. Ok, I'm as guilty as anyone of assigning names to songs. As far as I know, the way they develop new songs is that each member brings ideas to the whole group. Some are interesting. Some aren't. The interesting ones are worked on sometimes by the original person that brought the song to the group and some other times by other members of the group who liked the idea. Once the concept is developed, the entire group woodshops it and arranges it and voila! Song. I imagine a pre-arranged song would sound like IWHO when Jian did it solo in Ann Arbor. Maybe a little rougher. If someone on stage gets mentioned as the "writer" of a song, it's usually because the original came from them before it was arranged as a live song and usually that song fits the person's personality. Jian especially since he shows his opinions readily on stage. But when you get down to credit, the entire band gets credit where credit is due. The entire band tours and plays together and works hard to get things down. The bass fill may be played by Murray but the atmosphere that makes the bass fill work is setup by years of cameraderie and smelling Dave in the van. I'd guess that you wouldn't be surprised by the number of songs where the person singing lead is the original conceiver of the song, but I think there're a couple of songs you'd be surprised who brought them to the group. - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Sep 1999 13:34:44 -0500 From: Chad Maloney Subject: Re: Food for thought on Tapers Mer Mer wrote: > posts... Can the tapers move to one side or the other, or maybe to the back > of the venue? or maybe not put the mic stands at full height. Yes, Mer, they can. Please, if someone is doing something that may harm your enjoyment of the show, nicely mention it to them and see what they do. They may come back with the "I got here and this is how I enjoy my show" line. If that's the case, I personally take it and go on my merry way. If it is seriously gonna disturb the show, talk to someone more important about it. Honestly, I know that a lot of people here enjoy concert tapes and people know to go away from tapers when they want to sing talk or whatever. But it goes the other way too. Tapers need to choose their spots and be considerate. It may seem like they are providing a service, but they aren't. They are there enjoying the show. I try to get setup ASAP when I get there and talk to the people around me when I'm setting up a stand. I try not to setup a stand if I can. If I can clamp to an existing pole, I do it. If I can shoot off a balcony where I'm in absolutely no ones way, heck yeah I'll do it. But sometimes the venue is a square room and you gotta put a stand up. In this case, I'll try to mooch off someone elses stand first (and I highly recommend to others spending the 10 bucks for a mic mounting c-clamp - it's more than worth it). Last on my list of things to do is crack out my stand and setup, but when I do it, I do it early and I talk to the people around me, making them aware that I am there and what I am doing and asking if I'm getting in the way. I really think that is important and I wish people did it more. As much as tapers demand respect from people around them, the tapers need to respect the people around them as well. If they don't they come off looking like asses and it reflects poorly on a lot of people. Anyways, to me the bottom line is that if there is a taper whose stand is going to bother you during the show, ask politely if there is anything they can do about it. Best case they move. Worst case they stay and hopefully offer you a dub of the show as a peace offering. - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Sep 1999 20:38:09 GMT From: FruCake1@aol.com Subject: MPG.com pic gallery We've added a few more pictures to MPG.com. Just a suggestion for those of you who may be contemplating getting tickets to the Ottawa shows in November. First, some brief history. Eugene Haslam, owner of Zaphod's and Zaphod's 2, used to be involved in Barrymore's (two doors down from Zaph2) but left the operation over the summer. Barrymore's was the traditional club where Moxy played, and it fit about 500 people. Very nice place. Zaphod 2 is only about 2/3 the size of Barrymore's (from what I've heard) and Moxy sold out Barrymore's the last time they were in town. So you do the math. If they sold out a 500 person place the last time they were in town... this time they play two nights at a club that seats maybe 350... and it's US Thanksgiving. In other words: get your tickets now. www.ticketmaster.ca if you like the surcharges (less than for US Ticketmaster) or call Zaphod 2 directly. Do I have the number? I went over and talked to her right before When She Talks, saying that I knew she didn't realize it, but that she was disturbing people. She didn't seem to have a problem with that, and promised to be quieter. It seemed to be mildly effective and she was a bit quieter after that. It had nothing to do with the tapers, she was hindering peoples' ability to hear the show. I didn't think anything more of it, until after the show some guy came over to the tapers and asked who had come over during the show and told his wife to shut up. I wasn't sure who his wife was, but assumed that he was probably talking about the woman I talked to, so I said that I did. He complained a little while in general about it, but was ignored by everyone because the tapers were busy packing up their gear. For some reason, he didn't seem interested in yelling at me about it, which I found odd, since I was the one who asked her to be quieter. Uh-oh... could a seasoned concert go-er please tell me that's not their usual type of banter (the orgasm one, I mean), and if it is, that it's not a recurring theme through the whole show? Yah, my parents are anal, and they're not really going to appreciate it. A fleeting mention, random and semi-occasional cursing, nude people, whatever, but if that's a topic that lasts for more than 5 minutes, I'm going to have a hard time convincing my parents to take me to another slightly pricey (by MF standards) concert. Which is something I DON'T want. And it most certainly doesn't help me in convincing a friend to get her mom to take her, because her mom's jaw will drop and go 'THWACK' to the floor when she hears liberal uses of the word f***, never mind nude people having orgasms at the concert (*snicker* i can just see her expression).
