Preconcert notes: I wasn't supposed to go but, thank you Mark and Joe, you guys convinced me to go and i'm glad i did!!! These guys convinced me at 3 in the afternoon on Friday and its about a 3-4 hour drive from Akron to Detroit so I put my butt in gear and got moving. When I got in line i met some people from BG (Hi Jenna & crew!) that were really cool. Jenna is new to the newsgroup! Once I got inside is surprised Matt that I was there and he liked it! The opener was Tory Cassis and he is fab!! Barb and I just looked at each other when he came on stage and we both were in agreement. Looks good and full of talent! Concert Notes: I don't remember setlists or anything so i'll leave that to the people that do remember but.... Two words - Marion Fruvous!! I couldn't believe, I've never heard it and "WOW!!!" is all I can say. Well there was more to the concert than that. Get in the Car which i don't hear much was played. In Johnny Saucep'n, Jian usually does his little dance thing when they are going to town with all the foods and the last time doing it Murray did the same little dance Jian does. (Personal opinion - Murray looks better doing it!) They closed with the Gulf War song! One of the between songs chatter topics was about [paraphrased] "If you are new to Fruvous... If you are NUDE to Fruvous." Basically what was said from there by Jian was that you will get a discount for coming to the venue nude by $2 but they have to see you get out of your car, come in to the venue and leave the venue. Then Dave chimned in with [paraphrased] "I know where you were going with that" and then something about they have to see you have an orgasm at the concert. (Just something really off the wall that i thought i would mention) Post concert Notes: Has anyone else noticed that they have been doing intro's to certain songs and then not play that song? For instance, Mike said something about "Cottage Country" so i was expecting Pisco... but they didn't play Pisco. Jian towards the beginning of the concert did the intro to Splatter Splatter (which i think was a mistake) but they didn't play that until the end. And if you think back to Columbus 9/12/99 they wore the bootime hats for i think it was Boss... whats up with that? I think its kinda cool because now i don't know what song is gonna be played until they play it where as before I knew what song was coming up 5 minutes before they even played the first note. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: 18 Sep 1999 21:30:55 GMT From: srm9988n@aol.comicrelief (Lori at fruhead dot com) Subject: Re: I have a college pal... dopeytoo suggested: >Novac wrote: >> > >> It was the first artist that immediately came to my mind that doesn't >> consistently use rhyming. I'm not sure it's the cranky/snarkyness that puts up the walls, so much as the fallout from the reality alluded to below: There's always someone out there whose >situation >is worse than your own... but part of dealing is getting over your pride >enough to admit and accept that. A more vital part of dealing, however, is to accept that those bigger, worser things other people are dealing with DON'T mean you (global) don't have anything to be upset about. Again, here's an area where so many people really seem to think playing some sort of "whose-is-biggest" game is helpful, and use such "logic" in an effort to cheer up a funked-out person. How exactly people think that -- not merely pointing out that other folks have worse problems, but insinuating that someone is being childish or self-absorbed or self-indulgent for focusing on their own "petty little" annoyances -- how people think that can possibly be helpful eludes me utterly, but hey. Being aware of the "tiny things bothering me" really isn't a matter of (false) pride at all; I think rather it's a matter of acute, ashamed self-awareness. Those who know their problems and annoyances appear trifling compared to say, those of the East Timorese, further diminish their own pain by reminding themselves of that "big scheme of things". Then, ashamed of how petty they feel they are, they don't want anyone else to know. *That's* where the walls build up, where people don't communicate with each other because they're afraid someone else will see (or confirm) how awful they know they are. But we all have "tiny things bothering us" -- it's as immutable a truth as the big scale, the clouds and the sea. That's part of our reality, and really no more comprehensible than the physical reality around us. And part of what Earthquakes says to me is, none of these things really can be compared. Each just *is*, in its own, equal right -- and each differs from any other. No two clouds, no two earthquakes, no two waves, and no two tiny little human problems can be dismissed in effect as being "oh, just another one of those". We can't even begin to imagine how any of them might ultimately play out. Tiny things or huge, depending on the prism one uses they *all* are critically important. And they all are just another part of the backdrop we don't understand, cannot change in a predictable way, yet live out and attempt to understand and control our lives against. So if we can't control the backdrop, what can we do? Well, we may as well go with the flow. Look at it all, absorb it, maybe try to glean some understanding out of the experience if we can. But don't sweat it if we can't, and don't be too harsh toward ourselves or anyone else over it -- because in the end, all those things we're worried about don't much matter to "him" anyway. (So what *does* matter to "him"? I'm reading the lines behind the lines ... and guessing that it's learning not to judge either ourselves or anyone else based on factors "he" doesn't care about, or on our frustrated reactions to those factors. But maybe that's just my idiosyncratic in-reading ... :) ) - -- Lori *********************** Start off straight but I get to meander ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Sep 1999 21:43:00 GMT From: vika@fruhead.com (Vika Zafrin) Subject: Re: Bucks County Courier Times.... Cowboy Junkies have a similarly named album and there are a couple others out there now. Of course, Sarah and Tori both have "b-sides" sort of - they both release cd singles that usually have other unreleased (or differently arranged) material. So in the tradition of lp-singles, I guess the other tracks would be the b-track (not really a side at all). The fact that this made at least a few of you take my posts less seriously saddened me. I will do my best in the future to edit more carefully. The 80's have always been called the "Me" generation, implying that they each saw themselves as the centre of the universe. Dave calls them unique while still catagorizing millions of people under one label: His poor generation. After all, this generation is not the first to be "lost". They(1) refer to the WWI generation as being the "lost generation" to site just one example. It seems to me that through-out this song Dave seems to be only half-sympothizing with his generation. On the one hand, he sees how lost they are amidst themselves, and the "conveniences" that this period of time has to offer; Perhaps he is even lost himself. On the other hand, he seems to see the irony. There really are choices. It is a question of being able to take a risk. This line epitomizes his semi-pity. He does want to believe that he (as well as the other members of his generation) are unique, as well they may be. However, he seems to be mocking their self pity and self praise. Oh, Lori, you have hit on something that is personally meaningful for me. I so often hear people say something like "I know that this is a 'little' problem in the big scheme of things, so I should just let it go." My response is ALWAYS something like, "No matter what it is, if it's a problem for you, it's a big problem. You can't always compare your problems to others' and belittle your own feelings. Let's deal with the present and resolve what's bothering you right now." I realize that in the grand scheme of things, in the sort of "there but for the grace of God go I" point of view, some problems seem smaller than others, but I agree with Lori (I hope I'm not misinterpreting you!) that it all depends upon the prism through which we perceive our reality. None of these things canbe measured against each other because they aren't "the same thing." What is real for me at the moment is REAL, not something to be pushed aside or given short shrift because it isn't as "big" a problem as something that is real to another person. I struggle with how to express this exactly. I think that if a person belittles her own problems, she is taking away some of her "self." We have to acknowledge our own fears/insecurities/problems/etc, in order to deal with them and exorcise the ghosts/demons/etc that come with them. To the person struggling with the "problem", the "ghosts" are real and are a huge problem. Just some meandering thoughts that have been trying to jell in my mind recently. It helps to get them down "on paper," and I thank you for "listening." *Lois (Fogeyfru)--using entirely too many "..."s! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Sep 1999 01:35:35 GMT From: Blushooz@aol.com Subject: Re: Jian's eyes >> "Sometimes you're the windsheild, sometimes you're the bug." -Unknown >> >Written by Mark Knoffler, recorded by Dire Straits, covered by Mary >Chapin Carpenter. but what song was it? just curious. ~jess ------------------------------ Date: 19 Sep 1999 02:45:01 GMT From: ivywings@aol.com (katy) Subject: Re: I have a college pal... lori said: >Marilyn Monroe didn't marry Henry Miller >Marilyn Monroe didn't marry Henry Miller >Marilyn Monroe didn't marry Henry Miller >Marilyn Monroe didn't marry Henry Miller > >see? he rhymes every single solitary syllable! amazin', eh? how 'bout louis farrakhan didn't marry phyllis diller louis farrakhan didn't marry phyllis diller louis farrakhan didn't marry phyllis diller louis farrakhan didn't marry phyllis diller?
