When sleep is inconvenient, caffiene will work just as well. It is possible for two people to drive nearly 10 hours on 3 and a half hours of sleep. Cleveland must have the world's longest interstate exit ramp, because our FDC directions said to "follow the ramp around to Ontario." Baltimore may be located in Maryland, but North Baltimore is in Ohio. There are *a lot* of trees in Pennsylvania. When in the midst of a 10 hour drive, a Starbucks' grande coffee frappachino goes down well and is relatively guilt-free. Starbucks also lists *40* chocolate covered espresso beans as a single serving. Better count carefully though, because I think 41 is a lethal dose. The lack of proper signage in Cleveland makes driving there fun and interesting. Oh, and there is a friendly Dairy Mart and a Child Care Center in the red-light district. When on Frutrips, I actually *leak* time. On the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the rest stop had a hot dog stand. Mr. Spots, in Bowling Green, makes a decent Philly-style cheesesteak, but you can't have mushrooms on it. I'm not sure why I find this significant except that I *wanted* mushrooms. There are secret roads that do not appear on any known map. There are roads on maps that are invisible in real life. If you follow the signs for either of these types of roads, you will end up in a railroad terminus filled with Coke Express train cars and faced with a guard house filled with a man and a gun. Furthermore, if you read or experience this while severely sleep deprived, it will all seem emmensely funny. In hindsight, maybe there wasn't a gun. Public Interest is a decent NPR show where Kojo Nnaandi (I have no idea how to spell that by the way - but it's pronounced Koh-joe Nahn-dee) that is kinda a public forum over the radio. They either have a given topic and guests and Kojo kinda mediates the whole thing or it's open phones and Kojo acts as the mediator and the guests using his and his research teams knowledge to provide good conversation. For example, on Friday they discussed goals of University and how stated goals of a University affect freedoms. It was on location at Miami University (in Ohio). I kinda got the feeling that part of the universities solution to a problem they had where 55 racist flyers were illegal tacked up in their black student Community Center was to have this "open forum" to discuss it. Students were there asking questions and faculty and administration from the school plus the normal call in crowd. It was a good show. So, Kojo announced on Monday that GBS was going to be on. My first thought was "damn, that's a nice gig. People like Public Interest." But I forgot to listen to it (and no, I'm not begging for a tape here). But, someone from work listened to it. He didn't come straight out and say it though. He just walked up to me and said: Him: "So, Moxy Fruvous is selling out, are they?" Me: "Well, I dunno. Cleveland was a little packed, but there was a balcony that could have been opened. Columbus was pretty close to being sold out, but it didn't seem as packed as normal when it does sell out. Why?" Him: "Not the good selling out. The Reel Big Fish form of sellout" Me: "Oh" Me's brain: What kind of answer does he want to this? Should I speak in basic terms or just answer his question. Let's just answer his question. Me: "Well, some people think that I guess. Their newer stuff is a little more well-rounded and fall under pop a bit more, not that there's anything wrong with that. So people that take pride in the oddball being the oddball are kinda thrown off because the oddball is either just a very ecletic normal ball or doing a damn fine normal ball impersonation as of late." Him: Me: "But really what they are doing now is incredible stuff, especially compared to some of the stuff they used to be doing. They almost seem like a viable band now " Him: "Oh, ok." Me: "So where did that question come from anyways?" Him: "Well, I was listening to Public Interest and they had some band on..." Me: "Great Big Sea. Yeah. Decent Celtic music when they don't get too Sea Shanty on you." Him: "Right. Well, someone called in and asked them if they were selling out like "Moxy" is. It was kinda funny. She said "Moxy" like everyone should just know what they mean." Me: "I guess I can see that. GBS is doing more non-traditional stuff lately. I just got their new album _Turn_ from a friend from Buffalo. Haven't listened to it yet." Him: "Oh, well. Back to work" Me: "Right" So, did anyone hear this? What was GBS response to the question? I'd like to hear how they dealt with it, since to me GBS (and Fruvous) have just gotten better as they've gone on, it would be interesting to hear how they respond. - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Sep 1999 16:09:58 GMT From: nicole.twn.is@ana.ng.at.tmbg.org (Nicole the Wonder Nerd) Subject: Re: Public Interest yesterday On Tue, 14 Sep 1999 09:33:31 -0500, someone who looked like Chad Maloney whispered: >Me: "Great Big Sea. I agree totally with Lisa that the highlight was meeting so many people from the newsgroup. There is also a certain aura in the presence of so many fruheads! It was a positive, upbeat experience--well worth the drive. And that's not even mentioning the band, who are wonderful on tapes and CDs, but really awesome live. Not being able to stand on the pavement for such a long time, I had the opportunity to sit behind the mass of people in front of the stage. It was really fun to watch people dancing, moving to the songs, etc. (Vincent graphically signed someone's head exploding on Splatter, Splatter!) I also had the opportunity to watch people who were seeing the band for the first time. Many of them were standing a little further back, and the expressions on their faces can only be described as "rapt" or "awe-ful". I could see new fans being formed by the minute. Again, it was worth the trip, but it will be nice to drive 30 minutes to see them 11/2! Just a little addition--some of those folks listed by Lisa were not east-coasters (though she is, of course, as were others). Some of us were from the "real midwest"--Ohio and Michigan are "eastern midwest." Then finally, "they've simply cut the clown act. Let's hope it's only a phase." So if you stay hokey, act nerdy, and, in general, be clowns, then you're going to make people happy, but you're still not going to be taken seriously.
