This being my first week of school as a senior, I made my usual collage of Fruvous pics inside and outside my locker. I hadn't realized that many people had ever noticed this ritual of mine, being the only fruhead in my tiny H.S. Anyway, I must talk about them more than I am aware of...I was in the first AP European Hidstory class of the year, and we each had to introduce and tell a little bit about ourselves. When my turn came, I mentioned that my name was Erin, that I work at a veterinary hospital, and that I spent my summer going to see the most talented band in North America at various folk festivals and concerts. Immediately, just about everyone in the class turned around to look at me and said, in unison, "Fruvous!" I suppose I must get "a little" carried away when I'm talking about the Frulads...in order to make that kind of impression, in spite of the fact that no one else (to my knowledge) has heard any of their songs with the exception of GE&H and King of Spain. ><}}}*>~Erin~<*{{{>< "Tomorrow is a fresh new day with no mistakes in it yet." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Sep 1999 21:53:19 GMT From: "Cara (Laika) Kozack" Subject: Re: More Fruvous in School There are three main reasons why people here don't really like Fruvous that much. One is that they are born and bred to be strong country fans in EVERY sense of the word. There are a few rock fans but it is limited to top 20 bands. Also most people around here are extremely right wing. You are bombarded with messages from adults that the Tories and Reform are the *only* way to vote. Several people were turned off by YNB or GMIA but it was mostly just the type of music. Finnally in relation to the first point MF just doesn't get that much publicity around here. I tried to request it at the 2 rock stations in my listening range and they didn't have any Fruvous. Even when I first heard of MF I thought that they were a new band in 1998. But you can see the whole story on my site http://members.xoom.com/fruomffan/frustory.html People around here like stuff that they can classify into a traditional genre and MF scares them a bit I think. Oh well I have a rep of being odd and I don't mind it that much. It makes me unique and I just love listening to Fruvous in the woods in the yard. I don't particuarly care what everyone else thinks but people are pretty set in their ways. Even transplants to this area kind of conform to the standard. I stick out like a pig at a Carnigie Hall but I'm not ashamed of it. It would be nice if there were some more Frufans around here but people will listen to what they want to listen to. - -- Cara (Laika) Kozack "It's a reference to a _____ that you've never even heard of by\in a _____ that you probably don't even like." Luckily I didn't read the bulk of the emails until I got back today otherwise I would stayed in NJ wondering how much fun everyone was having. The people who *sold* me on the drive were a *Deadhead* teacher I work with (who looks EXACTLY like Jerry Garcia and the ONLY one that understands my passion for Fruvous) and my Fruspace provider, Amy (Amychic2). (Crashing at the Wellocks' B&B is a "must" for ANY Fruhead. :) ) Although the show was FANTASTIC, the HIGHLIGHT OF THE EVENING was meeting and greeting the ammf-folk--CheeseMonkey, MARIA, FogeyFru, AMANDA POTTER, Mollie, VINCENT, Paul M., DONNA, Lisa, TRACE, Lori, & KIMBERLY. (If I"ve forgotten anyone PLEASE forgive me!! It's been a long day! :) ) You guys really made the trip worthwhile!! I have absolutely NO REGRETS and I thank you *profusely* for that. :) Now how long do you think it will take me to drive to Chicago and Detroit? hehehehe :) PAZ, Lisa Bills ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 00:16:47 GMT From: "Vokes, Laurie" Subject: Milwaukee Paper reviews Thornhill Milwaukee, as lame as our local radio is, actually has a printed CD Review of Thornhill in the Sunday paper. Granted it was written by Cary Darling of the Orange County Register. But none the less it was there. With it being the first review listed, the headline was "Moxy Fruvous album shows why all the fuss." Here is the review for those of you who are interested. (reprinted without permission) What's in the Canadian water? First, it was the Canadians of "SCTV" and "Saturday Night Live" who hijacked our comedy industry, and now they're threatening to do the same this with humorous pop. Barenaked Ladies have broken through here, and now comes Moxy Fruvous, a Toronto foursome with similar pop smarts but a more biting sense of humor. Take these lyrics from "Downsizing," a track from the group's sixth album, "Thornhill": "We gave our times to a company planning our death / Well, it's a new challenge my family hasn't met yet." Then there's this blithe observation on being equivocal in the hooky "You Can't Be Too Careful": "When you feel like Woody Allen for the dialogue / but you prefer Tarantino's vision / holding up the ticket line / is not the time / to make this decision." It's these little bon mots, along with a knack for gracious harmonies and pop hooks galore (as in the exquisite "I Will Hold On"), that have given Moxy a rabid die-hard following north of the border. Like Deadheads, Moxy fans have been known to travel from gig to gig, and the Internet is choked with Moxy fan sites. "Thornhill" gives a good indication of what the excitement is all about. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 00:52:23 GMT From: FruCake1@aol.com Subject: Zaphod II TicketMaster # Here's the number to call to purchase tickets for the Zaphod shows in Ottawa: Ticketmaster (613) 755-1111.
