I was very excited about it, in my mind it was almost like Christmas where I couldn't wait for it to be here. One of the many things about the situation that struck me as odd was the fact that I'd heard most (and later realized it was all but 2) of the songs… so it wasn't even like looking forward to a lot of new music to digest. I commented to Lori earlier today that I wonder sometimes if maybe I like Thornhill because I feel obligated to. I've been reading others' commentary on the latest album, and while the impressions run the full gamut of appreciation or distaste I can't help but wonder if perhaps my thoughts, attitudes or feelings are somehow off or insincere? I wonder if subconsciously I love the album because I feel that as a true fan I am obligated to liking anything they release. There are songs that I don't care for, that I'll skip because I don't need to hear it (well, the only one I really skip is Half As Much, but as I explained before it was because I've heard it so many times already). All in all, the music from the album has been earwormed since I got it on the 10th. I'm on vacation, completely cut off from the modern world and attempting to become 14th cen for the week… and yet I can't resist grabbing Thornhill and throwing it in the CD player for a Splatter Splatter or Earthquakes fix. I go so far as to drive from an hour north of Pittsburgh to DC (with a stop in Ligonier, an hour EAST of Pittsburgh or so) to catch a couple of in-store performances… while I'm on vacation supposedly being medieval. Speaking of Splatter Splatter… the song has become aural speed for me. I remember how crazy I went when hearing it live in Roch, and then in DC… (considering a comment Murray made after the fact, I feel I _should_ be highly embarrassed, but oh well). Every time I listen to Thornhill I have to play Splatter^2 at least 3 times before moving on (same with Earthquakes). If I'm stressing about a new class, I throw in Thornhill, if I'm feeling nostalgic, I'll throw in Thornhill… it has currently eclipsed the previous 5 discs as my favorite (as far as overall album… my favorite songs are still Fell In Love, Live Gotta Get a Message, and Bed and Breakfast/Nuits de Reve). So, as I strive to make some sense of these scattered and half-formed thoughts… I have to wonder if these are all symptoms of an obsession? While I sound rational, I still carry on my day to day activities and maintain my other involvements… am I slowing loosening my grip on reality? Is it realistic and acceptable and possible to have some of the conversations that I've had and been involved in some of the activities that I have in relation to my favorite band? (Yes, I'm being purposely evasive… no, nothing has happened that would get me arrested or tarnish the Fruvous name, so get yer minds out th' gutter! There are just some things that don't need to be described in a public forum). Anyway, this started out making sense, but three nights of intensive preparation for new classes and getting up at 5am for 3 consecutive days is starting to take it's toll. Fates willing I'll see some of you happy folk in Toronto tomorrow. - --Angie ps I also can't help but wonder… I've seen Fruvous 3 times (if you count the DC shows as separate) within the past two weeks, if Toronto happens that's 4 times… and if I make it to the Ohio Shows that's 6 times in a short time frame. Part of me can't help but suspect that under their breaths the guys are saying, "Jesus, she's back! Doesn't she have a life? What could she possibly have to say this time??" Was my going to DC giving the impression of obsession? Or should I just take my nyquil and go to sleep (developing a sniffle). ama They say that the Road to Hell is paved with good intentions... well, at least it will be a smooth ride - --me ____________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 22:45:46 -0600 From: happygirl@fruhead.com (Dorky Spice) Subject: Re: First Impressions - Thornhill pictures In article , zingor@home.com says... > ... you may have to be as aged as me to remember this, but when i bought > vinyl back in the days when it was that or 8-tracks, there were rarely > *ever* any lyrics included with the record. this may have been attributed > to: 1) there was no place to put them ... all you got was a paper album > sleeve (unless the band went big budget and included a booklet -- and wow > was that exciting back then -- haha!) I mean, Wood seems very refined to me, despite being a bit "top heavy," so to speak. It's pretty rare to hear anything past Present Tense Tureen live. And the inclusion of strings in some songs and their exclusion in others (it seems that the violin would fit well in Bed and Breakfast[1] and Down from Above) but also consider that there are only 3 songs on the CD that they can play live using exactly the same arrangements as on the album (Fly, Doorstep, and B&B - 4 if you don't count the chimes in Down from Above) It really shows their instrumental ability - which is something that Bargainville didn't do, since the instrumentation tended to not be that complex. But I don't quite see how Thornhill does something different... although it seems that the instrumentation on it transfers better to a live setting, where overdubbing is impossible. :) I played both albums for my parents on a 10 hour car trip this past weekend, and Thornhill seemed to get more of a reaction from them - they said they didn't "get" the lyrics to Wood... too metaphorical for them, I guess. But they certainly liked the Beatlesque-ness of both of the albums, and they absolutley loved I Will Hold On. What does this mean? I'm not sure... maybe they just were paying closer attention when I put in Thornhill. :) > Remembering the way they made the instrumentals in Nuits de Reve shriek live, > having witnessed the transformation of Horseshoes, and having heard the > confident, full-tilt playing they're willing to do in studio now (i.e., > Thornhill), the sacrilegious notion occurs to me that if they could re-record > the songs on wood with the skill and knowledge they possess now ... But i felt compelled to write, especially in response to cara's post... there were a lot of parts of your post with which i agree, cara. I really dont know what to make of the album as a whole yet, except that, i generally like it, but... To start off, i have to agree it sounds a bit too 'mainstream' for my taste. Some songs, such as half as much, YCBTC, WST and Downsizing dont really appeal to me, but perhaps they need to "grow on me." Earthquakes, OTOH, grabbed me RIGHT away... i love it and i can tell its gonna be one of those songs that I'm gonna play over and over till my ears bleed :) (i am curious to know if anyonme has a particular song they feel the same way about, which one and why?) I have always really liked IWHO, and i enjoy it on the album, however it seems to be at a bit of a slower pace and sounds a bit too "studio-ish." i realize this is how its supposed to sound; i cant decide if i like it as much as i do when i hear it live. To me, its kind of like the difference between the album version of Jewel's "foolish games" and the MTV version. Her album version was the first of the two i heard, and i loved it. But then i heard the video, and at first it sounded too commercial and manufactured to me, and i *kind of feel the same way about IWHO. It just doesnt seem to capture the feeling and emotion on the cd as it does live, IMO. If only you knew has a very distinct 'Gordon Lightfootish' flavour, it is even recognizable in mike's vocal stylings. For this erason (and the fact that i think its just an all -around great song) i really like this one, even tho it sounds very "unfruvouslike" to me. The title of "weirdest song" i would award to Hate Letter. Its a very original song yet it sounds familiar to me somehow... its hard to explain. its not hard to say that i like it tho :) Splatter splatter is a great "crowd pleaser" type tune that is addictive, and it reminds me of bville. I think Sad Girl sounds very beatle-esque, as it does to many others. That is, however, the only song that really screams "beatles" to me, altho im not a huge beatles fan, so a distinct beatles sound is not really discernable to me. I especially like MPG lyrically. Muscially too, except that i cant help but think i might enjoy it more w/o the percussion. I have noticed, esp. with thornhill, that most of my fav songs or the ones that appeal to me the most are dave songs. i dont know if it has to do with his voice itself, the lyrics or his style... altho I simply *really love* dave's voice! :) Overall, i am impressed with Thornhill and agree that it does sound like a "concept album". There are some songs that i feel are "unfru" and i fear that i may not grow to appreciate them for any more than just "Moxy Fruvous songs" (i really hope that makes sense to ppl). I feel that Thornhill doenst truly capture the spirit of fruvous, but that could mean a lot of different things to different people. But with each album, i can definitely sense the evolving process taking place, as well as a lyrical and musical maturity. Fruvous is pretty much the only band that makes me stop and think... one doenst know what musical realm they'll dive into next, and sometimes you just dont know what to think. And that is one of the great mysteries that is moxy fruvous :) - -jen the cheesemonk btw, im sorry if this has been mentioned b4, but did anyone else notice that Independence Day is spelled wrong on the back cover? i thought this might have been intentional for some bizaare reason, but it is spelled right on the inside. hmmm. === __________________________________________________________ If at first you don't succeed... skydiving is not for you. __________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
