I think I will stick with putting a tape in my tape deck and taping off the radio (especially since real audio is usually pretty broken up over my pathetic 28.8 modem). While this is still not one of my favorites, I did gain a new appreciation for the song from Jian's explanation. Murray then joked and acted as if he hadn't been paying attention, and then urged everyone to pay attention as he counted off the start of the song. As soon as they started, Jian motioned to everyone to stop, because the keyboard had been set to the wrong sound. Murray complained that it had been such a good count to start the song the first time. >“Minnie the Moocher” followed with Mike getting his Ocean Cities mixed up by >making a reference to Minnie’s heart being as big as a bucket of crab cakes. I was expecting the rhyme to be "Philly cheesesteaks". At the key change part, Mike said, "here comes the Fruvous key change and the Fruvous key chains!" At the end of the song, they made the announcement about lyrics guaranteed 30 minutes before the show or your pizza is free. Jian said, "your $6 slice of boardwalk pizza..." and Murray jumped in, "...is only $5." >Then came “King of Spain.” >...Dave – er, the King, appeared through the upstage curtain in a >leather jacket and the old Tibetan hat. He sang the first line ala Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA", if you can picture that. Someone needs to inform Dave that the South Jersey shore is closer to Philadelphia than New York. Last year in Ocean City he sang "the Islanders call me up to drive the zamboni", and this year it was "the Devils", which got a round of boos from the people in my section. >Someone mentioned at some point that one of their setlists had denoted “Lose >That Girl” as the second encore, but it ended up being a rousing rendition >of “Brown Eyed Girl” featuring Trout Fishing in America. Watching them perform Brown-Eyed Girl was a blast! Everyone was having a great time during that one. At one point Mike shouted "throw them out the window!" in reference to the fine nursery rhyme polka Trout Fishing had performed in their excellent and well-received set. >Altogether, it was a great show. The guys were the most energetic I’ve seen >them in a while. I’ve also never seen such an energetic crowd, filling the >aisles and cheering as each song was introed. It was pretty great :). Definitely very high energy, both the band and the crowd. Early in the show, a few people in the crowd were shouting things at the band between songs, and Jian sarcastically said something about how it's a shame nobody just shouts out anymore. I guess everyone got the message that it was annoying, and it pretty much stopped after that. Late in the set, a couple of people in the front row left, and Jian announced that there were a couple of empty seats in the front row if some couple wanted to move up. Instead, a woman who was sitting on the front row on the other side, presumably with her husband, got up and moved to one of the empty seats. The guys joked about this, and then Jian came off stage and handed her one of the inflatable aliens. What a difference from last year, when they opened for Buckwheat Zydeco with a short standard opening set. I hope they play in Ocean City every summer! As an unofficial tourism promoter for the province, I can assure you that an impulsive jaunt to Manitoba for a few days would be far more enjoyable than any 9-5 job could be... even one in the States. Shows at the West End are always a great time (I'm buying tickets for that show in about two hours, when my 9-5 ends), and I'll assume Pinawa is pretty good too, though for some reason I've never been there (I'll buy tickets for that too, if they ever decide to answer the phone). So go ahead... pack your bags with layered clothing for Manitoba's unpredictable early fall weather, leave the firearms at home, but be sure to bring that delightful currency of yours which is worth 50% more up here. She wasn't large; she just sat down in the middle of the two (folding) chairs. Jian goggled a little, but then they started the next song. I can't remember what it was, but it included a line about Americans taking what they wanted. At the exact moment Jian said those words, the woman's husband reached forward and snatched the alien that was on that side of the stage, in a sort of, "Well, I may have lost my sweetie, but I'll always have _you_" gesture.
