August 10, 1999 Thornhill is perfect today. I went out to buy it on my lunch hour, opting for Borders at Pentagon City rather than Tower at Foggy Bottom; it just seemed like the more direct option. Indeed, I walked straight into the store, angled into the Music section and started on a beeline for the Ms. I was concentrating so deeply on my task that it took me a few seconds to recognize the song coming from the speakers: "Damn!" I said to nobody. "That's Half as Much!" I picked up what would soon be my very own copy of Thornhill and went to talk to the music department folks, to thank them for playing it. I bribed one of the guys to play it again later in the afternoon, then I made my purchase. As I stood in line, I noticed something; I felt something, didn't know quite what to make of it. Couldn't be excitement, I'd heard all the songs but one. Still, I felt lightness around my ribcage, bubbles around my head and a spring in my step. And what was that on my face? An otherwise inexplicable smile? A girlish grin? Are you kidding me? Ten years ago, I nearly skipped 'cross campus with my brand-spanking-new copy of R.E.M.'s Dead Letter Office with the Chronic Town EP. I was so excited, couldn't wait to get it home. The senses of that day stand out in my mind: bright blue sky, bright green grass, the Texas summer wafting off the pavement; cars passed, my friend Brad waved and I shouted to him "I got it!" as I raised my yellow and blue Sound Warehouse bag, back before Blockbuster swallowed SW whole. That day, that feeling...I had it again today, that much sweeter for its long absence. Went back to work, got on #moxyfruvous and was told to point my web browser to wber.monroe.edu. Interview! They read Ellen's e-mail, later I sent one and they read that, too. I was giddy. Today, I am a Fruhead. So, Amanda, how'd you like Thornhill? I finally got to play it after a long meeting, which was ironic because I'd been thinking of not listening to it immediately when I got to work. Anticipation, you know. Prove my maturity. Hah! I met, then I listened. (Here I had a song-by-song that I lost because of Netscape, it was probably more exciting for me to write it than it would have been for you to read it, so I'll just summarize:) Dave is in amazing voice on Thornhill, and his interpretive powers leave me speechless. I am, of course, one of those Dave-vocal-fans that Chad referred to. The rhymes in his songs are like Legos, and that makes the person who called Thornhill "The Dave Album" absolutely right. Earthquakes pervades the album: the song itself is a big, gorgeous jumble, a joyful noise. Although Thornhill as a title inspired really nice cover art, I think I might have called the album Earthquakes. Hate Letter is my new favorite song. There's great vocal unity throughout the album, which makes me very happy. Pretty much the whole thing makes me happy. IWHO is made for radio, as I remarked on the way out of that very first show last year at the Birchmere. "That new one" I called it. All in all, the vocal unity on this album is impressive. There are chilling moments where they seem to be singing as one person. Wow. (This is lame, so I'll stop now.) I capped off the evening by meeting Ellen, Zard and Ofer in Bethesda to see Robbie and Mike from EFO in a duo show. Had a nice dinner and was priveleged to watch two guys who clearly loved what they were doing. It was awe inspiring, as it was to watch the songs on Thornhill develop over the last year. On the whole, I can't imagine a nicer day than Tuesday, August 10, 1999. The album lived up to the joy I felt bringing it home with me. For now, that's perfect. - --Amanda, still prefers the lost version of this review, but what can I do? Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know. On lousy speakers it's not so bad. However, the percussion reminds me of some random track from a Wings album my folks had when I was little. The irony did not escape me. The best thing about the recording of MPG is the pacing and the beat; I listened to it several times tonight and noticed some nuances I hadn't before; well, and that coffee with cream voice.
