Mail started flowing again at about 2am on Sunday night, which was a lot later than we'd hoped - various things went wrong but we overcame all the obstacles :) Unfortunately, the ISP that queues smoe.org's email when it's down, had a mail loop on Sunday morning, while Jeff and I were in New York. Any mail sent to a smoe.org address after it went down, around 9am on Saturday morning, was sitting in the queue at the ISP, and some amount of it (we don't know just how much) got bounced on Sunday morning because of the loop. Everything else, including any mail sent after 11am on Sunday, stuck around in queue until we brought the server back up, and did get delivered. If you sent email to ammf between Saturday morning and Sunday morning and you got back a bounce with "too many received lines" as the error message, then you got bit by the mail loop, and your mail did not get delivered. -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@polyamory.org http://www.leftbank.com/CosWeb/ -- WBRS (100.1 FM) -- info@wbrs.org http://www.wbrs.org/ "We're a bunch of geeks, and so is our audience. Due to a *very* unfortunate, immature incident at the Milestones concert, I have come to ponder: Are we to expect a certain type of crowd at a bar versus a different style venue? What happened was a friend of mine and I were standing about 3 rows back from the stage nearly an hour before the concert started and he was smoking a cigarette. He noticed someone behind him blowing the smoke away so he dropped the cigarette and put it out. Nearly half a minute later this lady (the one who was blowing the smoke away before) simply began BITCHING my friend out. Are we supposed to skip the standard "please don't smoke near me" and trade it in for "put that f*cking cigarette away!" ? Even after he showed her that the cigarette was out, she accused him of lying and then proceeded to yell at him for being tall and standing in front of her because she wanted to enjoy the show but now she couldn't. Keep in mind that the whole time she was SCREAMING right in his face. Sure, there would have been no problem in asking for the cigarette to be put out, or simply not standing behind a taller person but instead my friend was subjected to a very unfriendly FrüHead. What do you guys think? Do you expect a smoky, very crowded atmosphere at a bar or is that just me? With a place like the Harro East there was much more room so things like that could be avoided, but bars simply concentrate everything together, right? Shouldn't we expect that? So anyhow, my friend was not at all impressed with the concert simply because this lady *chose* to stand behind him even though she is shorter. And if the lady I speak of is reading this, I must ask, why did you not go off on the group of smokers standing next to you who lit up not 5 minutes after the bitch came out of the closet? later, tom. PS - In all honesty, this is *not* a letter with an edgy tone. I simply want to understand what you folks expect when you go to a bar. While I too am upset with the attitude this lady had, I am not demeaning her with this. I just don't understand how she wouldn't expect such an environment. ------------------------------ Date: 12 Aug 1999 06:39:43 GMT From: mocksie@aol.com (Mysterious Mocksie) Subject: Re: new user Jombo69: I noticed that you're a "new user" on ALL FOUR of my newsgroups... I would not and do not expect that kind of behavior in a bar, a concert or a kindergarten classroom. Where there is alcohol you do need to occasionally make allowances, to save your own peace of mind. But it doesnt make it acceptable to act like a jackass. I have been known to scoot in front of someone taller than me, or even ask if Mr 6ft 4 would mind if I stood in front of him, but there is no need to scream. But thats just me. If I go to a bar, I expect to come out reaking of smoke. It's expected. A number of my friends smoke, so I'm used to it. But most of them are understanding enough to move a little if the smoke is blowing in my face (as long as I politely point it out...otherwise they don't realize that they're doing it). So to the bitchy woman, just ask politely, or move (it's not like you had a good view anyways standing behind the 6'4" guy!). On the plus side, one of the good things about a bar style venue is that you are free to stand where you want. If you want to sit at a table in the back, you can. If you want to dance, you can find a spot on the floor. If someone big is in front of you, you can leave and find a spot where you can enjoy the concert in your own way. On the otherhand, other venues like an auditorium *usually* have assigned seating, so you are stuck with what you get - no matter how tall the person in front of you is. Recently at the BNL concert in Toronto, I was stuck in a section of people that wanted to *gasp* sit during the concert! And I wanted to dance, but didn't want to stand and be rude to the people behind me. So I compromised and danced in the aisle, just myself and a friend, looking silly, but it made everyone happy. :) I don't know what my point is. Maybe if it's that if you're not happy, change it (a good philosophy for most of life). You're at a concert to enjoy yourself and that's the important thing to remember. So make sure you enjoy yourself while not ruining other people's experiences. On the otherhand, other As one of the 6'4" guys, I always try to get to the venue as early as possible so that I can stake out a spot. This way the people behind me know that I'm there and can adjust their positions accordingly. For all my shows except one, I've tried to not be in anyone's way. I don't want my height to inhibit anyone's enjoyment of the show. However, at Clifton Park in May, I figured I had just as much a right to be front-row center as anyone else, so that's where I was as soon as the doors opened. Sure, I felt a little guilty about it, but hey, I got there three hours early and paid just as much to get in. - --Adam adamh@javanet.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1999 08:41:57 -0500 From: Chad Maloney Subject: Re: MF booking number Amy wrote: > > I am currently trying to get JMU to book Moxy Fruvous for a concert in spring, > but my friend (also in charge of booking groups for concerts) told me that I > have to give them all the info...including the booking number for Moxy Fruvous > or whatever. When I go to a bar, I expect to smell like smoke until I shower. I expect to have to put up the smoke if I want to be able to stand whereever I want. To me, the lady was badly behaved and had no right to yell. If anything, she should have been greatful your friend was so considerate that he put it out in the first place without being asked. That's wonderfully polite. From the way the lady acted, I dunno if she was a very unfriendly Fruhead or just a very unfriendly Frufan. Can you quantify what this "what makes fruvous fruvous" is? I'm interested. I hear a whole durned lot of what I think makes Fruvous Fruvous in Thornhill. There's intricate vocal parts harmonizing every chance they get. There's points of complex instrumental buildup that break apart near the right times. There's slick guitar work highlighting many of the tracks. The only things inately Fruvous that I can come up with that are missing is the silliness, which is just a little subdued to me and not totally gone. It's evident in the playful intro/outtro stuff and in some lyrics, it's just that the whole song isn't compromised in order to add one funny lyric, in much the same way the entire feel of the album isn't compromised to put in one silly song. There's a reason why Organ Grinder was a hidden track I'd bet. I'm intereated here.
