Hehehe... the background vocals are what the song is all about! There's a lot I still haven't gotten yet, but what I have heard is great. I'm not going to give anything away, but listen for the guys singing lines very softly in harmony in the beginning of the break. You'll know what I mean when you hear it :) I haven' caught the Half as Much quote, but in the middle of the break Mike starts singing Sad Girl ("Once in a while, to hold your head high...). These are really what make the song! All this being said, I have to say that I am really not as thrilled as everyone else about the album. There are a lot of songs that I do like, but others..... My rundown: Half as Much - A good album opener. Expect a tab on FDC soon :) Sad Girl - It's okay, but dosen't really do it for me. Nothing that really grabs me. Too Careful - A good, energetic song. I enjoy it, but not my favorite. IWHO - I really like the song, but I prefer the live version much more. More guitar, more energy from Jian, and less bass and drums after the first verse (as in the live version), would really make the recording better. Earthquakes - It rocks! See above. When She Talks - From my favorite to my least favorite. This is a skip song for me. What's the point? Splatter Splatter - I really like this one too, and they did a pretty good job with the recording. The only thing is the guitar as I commented above. Independence Day - No offense to all the Murray's people out there, but I don't get this one. Downsizing - I certainly respect Jian and his motives for writing the song, but I'm just not big on depressing music. Hate Letter - This is a fun song! Listen carefully :) If Only You Knew - Great Mike song, and excellent recording job. MPG - Excellent recording! I look forward to seeing people on Friday! "[you can't be] too careful" is still catchy as ever: mom & i had a bonding moment listening to it pumping out my convertible three times through on the way home from krogers tonite. "iwho" does, indeed, have 'single' written all over it, and it still makes me melt. *sigh* "id4" is so hauntingly beautiful, especially the bridge. wow. lately i've become more and more of a murray fan, & this song only serves as icing on the cake. "mpg", too, is poignant and satiric all at once, with dave's gorgeous melody carrying it. this song has grown on me by leaps & bounds. i wish fruvous'd played "earthquakes" for FRFF--it just seems so folkily eclectic & appropriate for such a venue. i joked w/ my bf eric that fruvous encompasses many decades here: 60's pop ["half as much"], 70's pop ["hate letter"], and 80's pop ["when she talks"--what *did* they do to jian's voice??]. "splatter^2" is fantastic--i had a taste of this from the NPR broadcast a month ago, but it just plain rocks on my own personal cd. with that & "if only," mike really outdoes himself. "downsizing"--what a surprise. i'm going to need several personal listenings to this song before i fully appreciate it. and last but not least, TH has rekindled my love "sad girl," the first of this batch i got to hear in a live setting way back in june of '98. wow. this album was worth the wait. between this & the new cd's from GBS & EFO, '99 has been a *banner* year for music. thank you, fruvous. you've created a masterpiece. ^kat^ "red and gold bleed down to black" http://fly.to/the.midway.after.dark ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V3 #683 ********************************************
