I have a better suggestion: we marry him off. That will make the man quite obviously "off limits". It does not matter if Jian does not wish to make such a committment; he will simply have to make the sacrifice for the greater good. Of course, this works only if you believe in the sanctity of marriage, and if you believe Jian believes in it as well. Perhaps this plan is not as perfect as I thought... Just a warning for all the girls out there who are looking for the book as we speak! Marquez is not an easy read, usually. It's not what I'd consider "light" reading, anyhow. I'm not disparaging the reading level of this group; actually I'm pretty impressed with the level of intellectualism that occasionally creeps up here (between all the other banter, etc!). I'm pretty impressed at this book being a force in Jian's life; though the authors listed in MBLABOA are no lightweights! In addition to this band's political views, social commentary, etc, their level of reading is pretty impressive! It'd be great to sit down and have some good conversations with them. *Lois ------------------------------ Date: 07 Aug 1999 03:35:18 GMT From: srm9988n@aol.composter (Lori Martin) Subject: Re: New Faces...too damn many for my taste >Luella Benn wrote: >> But am I the only one to >> disagree with the statement that this is a great time to be a fruhead? I >have >> a wandering thought that this is about to become a very trying time to be a >fruhead. I think what is going on, and what Luella's feeling, is that the band is verging into something that we *hope* enables them to continue to defy definition and be the grass-roots impromptu band with personality and heart and the rare relationship with its fans that we so enjoy, but on a level that provides a greater measure of ease, security, happiness, comfort or what-have-you for them. For the past year or so (which is all I've been following them, but I've seen lots of changes in that time) it seems they've been testing the next level, seeing what it feels like -- and that it is a very *challenging* time to be either them *or* a Frühead. What it seems to me they are trying to do is to learn from the past, not repeat its mistakes or excesses, yet still be in a position to reap the good things that can come with wider commercial success. And challenges can be uncomfortable. The thought of having to set up speed-dial for TicketBastard in order to have a prayer of seeing a Früvous show gives me pause, yes. (Last August, was ANYONE on this ng preplanning New Year's Eve so thoroughly? And that was for freakin' NEW YORK CITY, where half the east coast tries to be that night, not Buffalo -- no offense Buffalonians.) The thought of the marketing machine and its hype alarms me. But we can adapt, as I'm fairly sure the band's been adapting all along. Our ranks may burgeon with the release of Thornhill and the upcoming tour; our little pocket of the web may become more attractive to trolls (remember all the spam we started getting after FrüCon? Was that mere coincidence? Is it coincidence that we've had at least 2 troll-sightings since FRFF?). But my bet is that the Frühead community, online and off, can grow with the band, can embrace newcomers with grace and humor. And I suspect what will happen is that the rest will sort itself out. The committed new fans who subscribe to amm-f or who we see regularly on tour will hang in here and become part of "us"; the thrillseekers or trolls will get bored with discussions of literature and candy and take off. We may see screeching teenyboppers at concerts swooning for Jian and sobbing over I Will Hold On (thoughts which both make my blood run cold), but they will NOT likely be Fruheads over the long term -- only until someone "cuter" comes along . Either that, or repeated exposure will enable them to appreciate the finer points of artistry, and not just the pretty hair and endearing grin. :) Anyway, maybe I'm just feeling sanguine tonight, but I don't see the challenge as being a bad thing. I just see that we'll have to be hospitable, and try to keep a sense of humor when someone bellyflops into the ng. And we'll have to buy all our tickets in advance, instead of planning last-minute Frütrips. sigh. Small prices to pay, really, for the wild ride we've had, and likely will continue to have, with this band that encourages us to think of them as ours. Never mind that they're NOT "ours". They're pretty damn generous with us -- enough that they aren't unapproachable, that they view us as individuals, with names and interests and personalities they remember and try to engage with, and not just a market. So let's try to spread that generosity of spirit that they demonstrate so often, and not be too selfish about sharing them, okay? - -- Lori, actually tired of babbling. *********** plays well with others BUT also runs with scissors ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V3 #669 ********************************************
