Perhaps it is, but in my mind Barnes and Noble is a lot MORE EVIL. They also have shut down local bookstores, plus they have Mafia connections, and they do worse than ease out smaller competition, they actively target other stores for distruction. (Ask me sometime what happened to the University Cellar in Ann Arbor when B & N moved in). They are total bastards and I try NEVER to shop there. Borders, OTOH USED to be a family owned Ann Arbor institution. It was easily the best book store in Michigan. It is too bad that the Borders family sold out to Kmart, but can you blame them? I am sure the offer was astronomical. Perhaps it is just left over local loyalty that keeps me from seeing the current Borders as a monster, but I just can't. There still seems to me be a shred of the spirit of the original in all of the clones. A.J. - -- Mariaweb last updated 5/13/99. See Maria Louise in all her... erm... Glory? It's just like singing along or clapping (although much less loud, and in my case infinitely more rhythmic.) Other bands have been known to pass them out at gigs to encourage audience participation. I guess Fruheads just don't need as much encouragement. But unmic'ed shakers are inaudible over the rest of the concert din, which cannot be said about off-key over-the-breath singing or can't-keep-a-beat handclaps. Now if they're used in non-percussive songs where they don't belong, they stand out like a sore thumb. But if several frulads are shaking eggs or other grain-filled thingies into mics, a little audience participation is not audible to the rest of the crowd. I've tested this. I can't even hear my own much less Trace's or ladywench's. :) Plus, they get a laugh out of Jian. :) - -- Lori ******************************* Lori's Strange and Wonderful World: http://members.aol.com/srm9988n/index.html Früvous/amm-f factoids galore (courtesy of Colleen Campbell): http://www.fruvous.com/news/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Aug 1999 16:34:10 GMT From: ChinaCat (nah nah nah!) Subject: my humble paean to Fly Ode to “Fly” why an ode? you ask. well, because. i feel like flexing my brain a bit and i got a lot of pleasure out of listening to the Fly on LN this morning on the way to work. why “Fly?” you ask. well, because. it’s the first song by fruvous that realllllly really pulled me in. the first fruvous song i fell in love with. true, what got me here was going to my first show, and they didn’t even play it there. but they did play it at my second show, and i was mesmerized by the woeful harmony of this song. that’s right, woeful. that’s what i liked about it. since this is the first time i’ve written an ode to a fruvous song and i have no real plan for what to say, i’m giving some thought to its author first. of the four members of fruvous, jian writes the songs that i love/hate-- there isn’t much middle ground for me with JianSongs. correction: i really don’t *hate* any fruvous songs; for that to be true, i’d have to not even enjoy them live, and i can’t think of any song that that’s true of. but there are a handful of songs that i am indifferent to, and many of them are JianSongs. now, before i am set upon by hordes of fanatic jian-heads, let me add that he has also written a bunch of songs that i like *so* much, they give me shivers. songs that make me think this man is a genius at working our (ok, *my*) emotions over-- and please don’t come any closer, thank you. and Fly is one of them. lyrically, this song strikes a chord with a lot of people, i am sure. most of us have experienced a break-up like this. one where it didn’t end in a fight, but in a sad and bewildered “why did it have to end?” feeling. the verse that really captures the feeling: So they cried inside while their eyes smiled There was no turning back for two Erase the memory stockpile All alone, and one thing left to do i wonder, what is really meant by this “one thing left to do?” the song is a funeral pyre; are we to believe they’re actually lighting their own? i guess that’s the idea i like most; that their story ended when the song did. as horrible as that is, the alternative could be worse. think of it: the ride’s over, the rollercoaster comes to a stop. now they have to look at each other one last time and know that it’s time to leave, it’s final, they’ve crossed the line and now they have to stand up and walk off in separate directions. *shudder* i’m putting too much of my own experience into this reading, i know. i’m bitter sometimes about the fact that we are allowed (by fate, or whatever) to love people who are not right for us. how does THAT help perpetuate the species, HUH?? ;) but it’s the execution of the song that really pulls me in. this morning i listened to the LN version, right now the 10/98 martyr’s version is playing. the opening guitar and harmonica parts let you know this is going to be a sad, sad song. jian’s vocal on the verses is thin and pained-- as it should be. it hurts to listen to it; i feel like he’s going through it all over again every time he sings it. but what really does it for me is where dave or the rest of the band comes in. the blending of jian and dave’s voices on the “let go” line gives me chills every time, especially the last one, when dave holds the “let go” a bit longer. and the harmony on the “they could fly/ you and i” rhyme is so beautiful to me. like it’s expressing this last gift the couple is giving each other-- a few moments of beauty. what i’d change if i could: i’m a big fan of the gee-tar, and i think a guitar solo before the last refrain would be more powerful than the harmonica. it’s nice, but i think guitar would be a lot more evocative. if you want an idea of what i mean, listen to the song Bittersweet by Big Head Todd and the Monsters. it has one of the best-written guitar solos i’ve ever heard as far as matching what the song is trying to say. ok , i know it’s an acoustic song. i just wonder if it could be done electrically, and what it would sound like. ok, i’m rambling now. also: whew, this is a hard song to follow. i see from the setlist for the show that the LN Fly was taken from that it was an encore and was followed by MBLABOA. *shudder* that totally wouldn’t work for me, unless there was a bunch of chatter in between. after a song like Fly, i need a chance to collect myself again before something really upbeat is played. this makes it hard to fit into setlists, which is a shame because live is the only way to hear this song. i find that the band really held back vocally on the album version of Fly. oh, and i have no suggestion for how to change this. to hell with me, play whatever you want afterwards. i’ll catch up. this concludes today's Totally Unsolicited Opinions from Ellen. peace, ellen *************************************************** Airborne with nothing to land on...
