Then again, others have said they sound like They Might Be Giants or Talking Heads. Anyone see the connection? *Of course* they sometimes show little glimmerings of these bands - they were raised on them. They talk about them all the time. They cover their songs. They did an entire show of nothing but these bands' songs last year; and from what I've read, 'Thornhill' is intended as a concept album of sorts which gives a nod to influences and musical idols and the stuff you heard coming out of the stereo speakers when you were a kid. Are these songs Beatlesque? Yeah. And intendedly so, methinks. Jian referred to the album as a "pop album . . . in the sense of Abbey Road" (http://www.canoe.ca/jammusic/may20_moxy.html). It would seem to me that these reporters are not just pulling a comparison from thin air, but making a connection intended by the band. For crying out loud - - the write-up on the distributor's website makes the comparison (http://www.fruvous.com/news/9906razr.html). *Shrug* Why is this such a bad thing? The term "Beatlesque" may have a trite connotation to some, but whether the guys wrote the songs with the Beatles in mind or not - find me pop music written in the last 25 years or so that *doesn't* ring of the Beatles in some way. You'd be hard-pressed. We're talking about what is perhaps the most influential group of musicians in recent musical history. Granted, this is coming from a music cynic who sincerely believes that nothing new has happened in R+B since Stevie Wonder or in rock since Queen, but still . . . let's not dismiss this Beatles stuff so quickly. Actually, the criterion for Mensa membership is a score in the 98th percentile or higher on any standardized IQ test (that means you supposedly did better on the test than 98% of all other people would if they took it). There are several different tests that can be used to qualify. Each test uses a different "point" system, so a number like "140" is pretty meaningless as far as qualifying to join. You can score higher point-wise on one test and higher percent-wise on another (this happened to me). And then to join Mensa, you have to send in your test scores, sign up and pay membership dues. > No offense to any Mensa members here, but I'd rather hang out with people who > are smart and witty without fixating on the fact, or on a number that > quantifies it. Like Früheads :) Who said Mensa members are all witty? Or that they fixate on the fact that they're smart? I guess I did once wonder if their meetings would be a bunch of people standing around complaining "We're so smart and the rest of the world is so dumb..." - but they're not like that at all. They're just a bunch of people (with a higher percentage of nerds, but not all nerdy - a very diverse selection of people) who get together and go out to restaurants and have parties and stuff. One thing I've noticed - you'll meet many more EX-Mensa members than current ones. It seems a lot of people join, and a lot of them leave. I've got nothing against the organization; I left because the local groups available to me had few members close to my age, and I didn't have many interests in common with anyone there. Joining any large organization with local chapters is a good way to meet people if you're new in town, and so it served its purpose for me a couple of times.
