I have also notice disproportionate numbers of Tolkien and Dr Who fans. At Falcon Ridge, in the first conversation I had with a fruhead it came out that he liked Tolkien and H2G2. Now these are all things I'm heavily into, my question is what have other people noticed that fruheads tend to like? Now about yoru list, I love most of them. Christine and the Roches are both on my can't miss a local performance list. Wow, was *that* ever unexpected -- especially after Murray's sarcastic comment at the Bottom Line in response to an audience member's request for it. First time Trace OR I ever heard it live, so that was a most wonderful moment. 3) The techno/disco arrangement of Video Bville was AMAZING. I'm glad they've dusted it off again, and given it a fresh sound for those who've heard it frequently while placating those of us (mememememe!!) who appeared on the Frühead scene shortly after it disappeared from the regular playlist. I hope to hear more of this arrangement in the future. 4) I can't possibly recreate the verses, but here's The Killer Tent Refrain, as recalled by me and Trace: The tents, the tents, are coming down the hill We thought they were inanimate but now they're set to kill This summer here at Falcon Ridge we enraged the Falcon Gods And now the tents have turned to creepy crawling body-snatching pods. <"Rawhide" theme, or so Steve says> Beware *Beware* *BEWARE* The Killer Tents! For the refrain the stagefront Früheads made up a little dance to rival the Pisco Dance: arms extended forward in a rhythmic Pac-Manlike snapping motion, and after the third Beware an abrupt turning and pointing up the hill to The Killer Tents. The first time we did it the guys were cracking up; for the next refrain we turned to see most of those behind us doing the same thing. There must have been four thousand people on that hillside, all pointing out the nylon menace. Quite enchanting! The influences for this little ditty seemed to be musically the Beverly Hillbillies, Rawhide, and various television westerns, and lyrically MacBeth. Re: the heat and noise: the heat (and sunlight, for us nordic types) was stifling, but on the plus side there was plenty of free water, plenty of not-free but quite delicious cold drinks, and an organized attempt by the festival to keep things as comfortable as possible. Sunscreen was free for the taking, and there was also a free misting tent that Trace and i availed ourselves of frequently. The port-o-lets were kept in generally good shape -- far better than I've seen in most outdoor venues, with continuous cleaning and restocking, and a handwashing station that never ran out of soap. No, it wasn't the Ritz -- but it wasn't Woodstock either. July in New York State is pretty brutal, but if you come prepared and hydrate properly, hopefully normal outdoor conditions will not override your enjoyment of the weekend. Kudos to Gordon Lewis for going beyond the call of duty and securing space for thirty Früheads front and center for the mainstage set. Regarding camping, I really enjoyed our best-of-both-worlds approach of having a base camp at the festival for social purposes, and a motel room for actual amenities. It also enabled a very entertaining little pool party! :) As for the moron factor, it sounds like the lower camping area was much worse than the wonderfully named "high camping". Thursday night (for which we actually stayed in the campground) things were noisy but quite civilized atop the hill, and all calmed down by about 2:30; Friday and Saturday nights WE were the noisiest crew around, with our wild gathering of Früheads guzzling water and munching on various snackage. The drummers who so entertained us Thursday night seemed to pack up their drums for the rest of the weekend -- whenever I made the trek up the hill, there was no monotonous rhythm in evidence. Anyway, it was a blast. I'm hoping the mad quoters don't shirk their self-assigned duty here; by all rights there should be about 200 incriminating phrases recorded for posterity. I met people who somehow had previously succeeded in eluding me (hi Richard! sorry ladywench and I scared you! and hi Josh!); heard acts live whom I'd only heard on CD (or worse, only heard OF); and came home with seven new CD's, sunburnt shoulders, and a nicely decorated vehicle. I also was named Keeper of the Frü Goo, witnessed a Drive-By Früting, and got busted in the Hudson town square at midnight by the nicest policeman on the planet. All in all, a marvelous weekend! :) - -- Lori, off to bed. ******************** "Mounties eat lizards, eh?" ~~ my Sobe Zen cap from this afternoon's refreshing pause. ------------------------------ Date: 27 Jul 1999 06:10:23 GMT From: mocksie@aol.com (Mocksie) Subject: Re: I Have a Vision Melanie mused: >Actually, i heard some >monk made a mistake, and it's already >passed. like three years ago LOLOL!!!! Frankly I think it's more likely that Früvous will miss opportunities to make it big rather than "selling their souls". (Personally.. Raenfaerie added, re: the millennium: > Actually, i heard some monk made a mistake, and it's already passed. > like three years ago. whatchagonnado. That's if you want to call this year 1999 Anno Domini.[Year of Our Lord] Recalculations, mainly about the reign of Herod in Israel, determined quite a while ago that Christ was born in the year 4 BC. There is a tale which says that the Catholic church is going to skip 4 years on January 1st 2000 or 2001 to reset their calendar. Not sure how true it is. However if you're dealing in a more secular way of dating, choosing the year 0 is a pretty arbitrary thing and it might actually *help* to know that the Christians who imposed the system of dating were wrong about when they wanted that year to be. Personally I've always wondered why they chose the year of His birth instead of His 30th year, which is when He is widely believed to have started gathering disciples and the Church was really born.
