I am a semi-new Fruvous fan. My first encounter with the foursome was at the 9:30 club in DC earlier this year. Since that time, I have traveled with my pal, Vickie (whom we were referred to as 16 year-olds that offer sexual favors to the stage people by a Fruhead in the concert reviews...actually, I'm 21 and she's 22 and we don't offer sexual favors to anyone) to Toronto and VA Beach. She has also gone to Baltimore to see Moxy. We're planning another road trip to head up to Philadelphia for the Folk Fest. I only own one cd, which just happens to be the live noise one. And I have one poster. I'm new at this fan stuff basically. Have I said that already? Anyway, some personaly info. about myself to get y'all a glimpse into me. I am going into my senior year at James Madison University as a psyc student. Don't ask me what I want to do after graduation, because I am not so sure. In the long run, I want to be a clinical psychologist but that will take about four more years of schooling...which costs more money than I have. I am a resident advisor at school and love the job! If I could, I would do it for the rest of my life. :-) I am a military brat...currently living in Newport News, VA and will be relocating to Bradenton, Fl. at the end of August (well, my parents will be and I will go visiting them on my breaks from schoo). My friend Vickie actually is the one that got me hooked on Moxy Fruvous. She would play their cds and everything. But I just thought that she was funny. I liked their music, but didn't really pay much attention since we were studying or working on something. Then, she got tickets to their concert in DC and dragged me along since nobody else wanted to go. Truthfully, I didn't want to go and wasn't all that interested in going to DC on a Friday night to a club to hear a band from Canada. But, the second Jian and Murray walked on stage, my heart stopped for just a second and it has been on the verge of obsession ever since. And that's my story. This is very long, so I hope I don't bore you. I returned from the FRFF late last night and am still reeling from one of the best, funnest vacations I have taken in a long, long time... and although the music was fantastic, much of what made me so happy has to do with the atmosphere and the people (which, based on what I've heard, the opposite could be said of Woodstock '99). My girlfriend Linda and I arrived Thursday afternoon from Rochester NY (about a 6 hour drive) and set up in the lower "quieter" camping area (we are in our early-mid 30's and don't like to stay up all night partying, preferring to have a place far enough from the stage to relax, sleep, and just hang out). We soon found out that we had joined a small, friendly community of hippies, families, music fans, and friends from all over the northeastern part of the U.S., and soon more would be joining us. I was pleasantly surprised with offers of help, advice and conversation with the fellow campers surrounding us. There was just a general sense of togetherness that made me feel good, but wasn't overbearing, as everyone also respected the others privacy. Once the music started Friday afternoon I realized that from our camping spot that we could hear the music softly, yet clearly, being played on the mainstage. I loved this. It was perfect for when we were at our tent trying to cool off from the oppressive heat, eating, or just resting. As the weekend progressed I became more and more impressed with everything going on at this festival (except the heat and humidity, which you can't control... Thank God for the Saturday afternoon rainstorm). The organization and thought put into everything was incredible. The schedule in our program was accurate and dependable... if it said an act was going on at 4:10, it was. Having breaks of only 10-15 minutes between sets was perfect, giving people the chance to stretch, wander over to one of the other stages, buy food and drink, use the bathroom, etc... but the break wasn't so long that people got antsy before the entertainment started again. Speaking of bathrooms.... Porta-Potties by there very nature are disgusting, there's nothing anyone can do to prevent this, but we were very pleased with the upkeep of them all weekend. It seemed that they were being cleaned and hosed down 4-5 times a day, with the toilet paper always being replentished. This is the type of stuff that goes unnoticed unless it doesn't happen (ask the people at Woodstock). Next, the sound quality was amazing. With 4 seperate stages you would think that music conflicting would be a problem. It wasn't. Occasionally music would bleed from the mainstage to the workshop stage or vice versa, but this was rare and not an annoyance. The one thing neither of us thought about during the weekend, but I appreciate it now: I don't think alcohol was sold on the festival grounds. Obviously, people may have brought some with them, but I can honestly say that I didn't come across one instance where anyone abused this right and bothered the people around them. This is amazing!!! How can I even begin to rave about the fine First-Aid tent? This was one of the things that set Falcon Ridge apart from any other concert and public gathering I've ever been to, and showed that the organizers truly cared about the people at their festival. As I said earlier, the weather was very, very hot and humid. Much of the time it seemed there wasn't even a cloud in the sky to protect us from the sun. It was here that First-Aid went to the next level, offering free sun screen, bug spray, ice cold water and Gatorade to anyone that needed it (and not just little Dixie cups, but large 12 oz. cups... as much as you needed). The medical staff on duty was excellent, and I cannot thank them enough. Sunday, late in the day, Linda was overcome by the heat, becoming weak, lightheaded, and disoriented. The people on duty rushed her to an area to lie down with fans, ice packs, wet cloths, liquid and anything else she needed to cool down and get back to normal. Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!! As I said already, the music was tremendous. We got to see all the acts we wanted to see at least 2 or 3 times over the course of the weekend and each performance was unique and different. We were also exposed to performers that we had never heard of before, but wound up loving them. Our favorite acts at the festival and would like to see back: Moxy Fruvous Vance Gilbert Ellis Paul Eddie From Ohio Cliff Eberhart L.J. Booth Bob Malone Performers we would like to see at FRFF in the future (some of these may not seem like they would fit, but I think they would all be perfect): Arlo Guthrie Hal Ketchum Randy Newman Loudon Wainwright III The Roches Christine Lavin Rockapella Susan Tedeschi Also appreciated were all the water trucks on-site where we could fill up jugs of water for free, not to mention the free showers (although you may want to think about having at least on more shower truck available, if you can). Being able to peruse the wide variety of food vendors, arts & crafts dealers, and souveneir stands was great, but I do have 1 question. When people want to buy food why do we have to buy tickets first? It seems to me that it would be better for impulse buying if you could walk up to a stand, hand over your money, and walk away with an ice cream cone, piece of pizza or whatever. Having to wait in a seperate line for tickets and going back to get what you want detracts from the immediate pleasure of seeing what you want and getting it. Oh well, that's just what I think. If you read this far, thank you. For the people that didn't, I don't blame them. Just one final thank you to the organizers, staff, volunteers, performers, music fans and fellow campers for a great vacation. You were all incredible. A rally was held in London in order for him to see how many boys he had reached through his organization. A group of girls crashed the rally, saying they wanted to be Girl Scouts. Baden-Powell's sister Agnes took the responsability of leading them. She became the "Grandmother of Girl Guides" B-P then met Olave St. Clair Soames, whom he married (and became Lady B-P). They shared the same birthday (February 22nd) which is known as "thinking day" in Scouting and Guiding worldwide. She became the Chief Commissioner of Guiding. Together they brought scouting and guiding to places worldwide. So there you have. Why B-P is mentioned in "Boo Time" I really have no idea. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd love to know. The deluge came at a good time, though, as I happened to be in camp and could close up tents and stuff. My tent was bone dry Saturday night. All in all, we spent the weekend getting boiled, then steamed (when the sun came out right after the downpour, it got even hotter for a little while), and then baked on Sunday. Fruvous was great, of course. The tent-song banter sounded so Fruvian that it took me a few moments to realize that the ditty was actually a setpiece. I was even more taken by The Nields, far better than I'd ever seen them before. David Nields running several dozen yards up into the dance area, while continuing to play his guitar the whole time, was incredible. And their encore with The Kennedys, singing songs from *my* youth, before most of you were born, was wonderful! Excellent to finally hear EFO, who I'd somehow missed over the years. Greg Brown seemed a bit subdued this year, but Vance and Cheryl were just a hoot! Thankfully, the FRFF spirit of friendliness overwhelmed whatever thoughts there were about rushing the stage for Ani. Peer pressure kept people calm, collected, and sitting (though still rockin' and boogiein') right up to the end. The crowd did overtax the facility, though I must say that the (lower) campground was still well maintained -- 'handy houses' were cleaned regularly and usually had TP, plenty of water available. It was tighter camping than previously, but still far, far, far easier to deal with than the cheek-by-jowl crush at the Philly Folk Fest. Finally, special thanks to Tobey, who gave my Frumiles card a make-up stamp for the Boston Fleadh. He asked me for some proof that I'd been there -- yeah, like I'd carry a ticket stub around with me for a month -- but I convinced him by mentioning seeing Murray and Jian playing soccer stage-right for an hour or so after their set. - -- - ----------------------------------------------------------- Neal Traven "You're only young once, but you can be immature forever" -- Larry Andersen, relief pitcher ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jul 1999 01:44:07 GMT From: Raenfaerie@aol.com Subject: poster (was Re: I'm new here.)
